My invention relates to cast metal arti cles provided. with'detachable feet, and. has to do particularly with the manner of attaching feet or similar-supporting members to bath tubs, foottubs and like sanitary'articles formed of cast metal and providedwith a protecting coating, such as vitreous enamel.

Of the various means heretofore employed for attaching feet to such articles, the most satisfactory and desirable, as to simplicity and effectiveness in structure andoperation, has been to provide the outerfsurfac'e of a tub with lugs adapted to form a tapered dove-tail slot, and to provide as an integral part of the foot a tapered or wedge-shaped tongue adapted to be engaged by the lugs formed upon the tub. When attaching the foot to the tub, the tongue has been driven between the lugs so as to be firmly engaged thereby, and, in order to diminish the liability of the foot becoming loose and ultimately falling off, a stud bolt has been inserted through the tongue, the inner end of such bolt being engaged by an abutment suitably formed upon the surface of the tub. This foot attaching means has been found to be objectionable, first because the stress upon the lugs caused by driving the tongue into secure posltion is liable to injure the enamel on the inner surface of the tub; secondly, when the tongue is not securely driven into position, the foot is liable to become loose and rattle or fall off; and finally, both the tub and foot being formed of unmachined cast iron the surface of which is necessarily, irregular, it is practically impossible to so position with relation to the lugs the stud-bolt engaging-lug upon the surface of the tub that a neat fit will be obtained in all cases without more or less driving the tongue between the lugs.

The object of my invention therefore is to provide a means for securing the tongue of a foot to the lugs of such articles, which meanswill be effective to firmly holdthe foot in its proper position regardless of the irregular surface of the contacting members and 'without exerting excessive and enamel-injuring stress upon the lugs.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, I have illustrated an; embodiment of my invention.

Referring to the drawing, the outer surface of a tub body 1 is shown provided with beveled lugs 2, 2 forming a dove-tail slot between them so tapered as to receive the beveled wedge-shaped tongue 3 formed integrally' with the foot 4;. The means which I preferably employ for firmly holding the tongue 3 between the lugs 2, 2*, without exerting excessive stress upon such lugs, consist of an auxiliary'stop 5 adapted to be secured to the tongue 3 and to abut against the ends of the lugs 2, 2*. Such stop may be secured to the tongue 3 by means of a studbolt 8. extending into a screw-threaded hole in such tongue, and the portions of the stop abutting against. the lugs 2, 2 preferably consist of wings 6, 6 the lug-abutting ends of which are preferably beveled, as shown,

It will be readily understood that the irregularities of the contacting surfaces of lugs and tongue will cause a variation in the length of the tongue 3 extending beyond the inner end of the lugs 2, 2 To the end that the stop 5 maybe adjusted to compensate for suchvariation, a slot 7 is formed therein and the bolt Sextends through such slot. As will-be readily seen the thickness of the wall of the stop adjacent to such slot 7 diminishes from the front to rear of the slot, that is, from" the end adjacent to the leg to the opposite end.
