fl '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NO MAN E. MIGHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, county of Marshall, and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Surgical Appliances of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to surgical appliances and particularly to devices used in the treatment of fractures of the leg.
More specifically my invention relates to improvements in the device forming the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,041,138.
One objectof my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned in which the frame members may be comparatively ligi t and at the same time of great strength and rigidity.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a device as mentioned which may be readily and quickly adjusted to a bed and quickly secured thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved suspending device for the fractured leg which may be readily adjusted with relation to the frame and which may be reversed on the frame to accommodate either the right or the left leg.
A further and particular object of my invention is to provide improved supporting means for the body and head of the patient which may be readily and quickly adjusted and which shall be conducive to the comfort of the patient. I
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
/Vith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a pair of arches adapted to be secured to the bed adjacent the head and foot thereof, a longitudinally disposed bar connecting said arches and provided with means for raising and support ing the patient and a truss rod for said bar.-
ldy invention further consists in a device as mentioned equipped with means for tightening the truss rod to increase the rigidity of the longitudinal bar.
My invention further consists in a device as above mentioned further characterized by having the arches adjustable in width and equipped with improved means for securing the same in adjusted position.
My invention further consists in improved means for suspending the leg supporting device.
My invention further consists in certain improvements in the means for supporting and. raising the body all as will be fully de: scribed hereinafter and particularly pointedout in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device illustrating the same arranged upon a bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line cc02 of Fig. 1, and illustrated upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 1- is a longitudinal section of a portion of the body supporting device, upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 5. is a transverse vertical section on the lineyg of Fig. 4, upon a reduced scale, illustrating the yokes for supporting the body bandages. Fig. 6' is a detail section upon an enlarged scale illustrating the manner of connecting'the bandages to the yoke. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one end of the bandage with the strap connected thereto for securing the same to the yoke. Figs.

teferring now to the drawings 1% and 15' indicate the transverse arches arranged adjacent the head and foot respectively of a bed illustrated conventionally at a. Each arch comprises a pair of vertical members 16 having their upper ends bent into h.ori-' zonta'l position, and a central sleeve portion 18 into which the ends 17 telescope. The ends of the sleeve 18 are tapered and threaded as at 19 and split longitudinally as at 20, and upon the tapered ends 19 are threaded nuts 21. It is obvious that by means of the nuts 21 the vertical members may be readily secured in adjusted position. The lower ends of the vertical members or uprights 16 are formed with clamps 22 for securing the device to the side rails of the bed. Fixed centrally to the sleeves 18 are T-inembers 23 into which are secured the ends of the longitudinal member 24; extending the full length of the device and connecting the two arches. A collar 25 is fixed to the member 24 and provided with a downwardly extending arm 26, forming a bracket, and the by tightening the nuts 30 greater tension may be applied to the truss rod to increase the strength and rigidity of the longitudi-- nal member 2 1.

The aperture 32 and rod 33 are preferably squared in cross section. to prevent rotation of the latter, and a set screw 34 is provided to secure the rod in adjusted position.
35 indicates a pulley secured to one end of the rod 33 by a swivel joint 36. Any ordinary support or extension device 37 is suspended from the pulley 35 by acord 38. It is obvious that the rod 33 may be removed from the sliding block and re placed in either position, that is,to the right or left to support either leg, and the swivel 36 allows the extension device to be properly arranged without the necessity of rerigging the same.
Rotatably mounted on the member 2 1 is a drum 39 provided in its ends with antifriction bushings 40 formed of brass or other suitable material. The collar 25 forms an abutment for one end of the drum and the other end extends into a housing al which may be secured to or formed integrally with the member 23 on the head arch. Fixed to the end of the drum within the housing is a worm gear 42 meshing with a worm 4E3 provided. with a squared end 44 to receive a crank 45 for operating the same. A pair of strong flat straps 48 are secured to the drum 39 by means of fiat hooks a9 engaging in apertures 50 in the drum. To the lower end of the straps $8 is secured a floating bar 51 of the body supporting device. It is obvious that by turning the crank 45the drum may be actuated to raise or lower the body supporting device and the the desired position.

Slidably and rotatably mounted on the floating bar 51 is a plurality of transversely arranged yokes 55. These are curved downwardly at the ends as indicated in Fig. 5
and provided with a strut or brace 56. U- .bolts 57 are provided for securmg the same in position upon the bar. The ends of the yokes are provided with a pair of apertures and to receive the straps for supporting the body bandages or slings 60. 61 indicates the straps. The slings 60 are formed of broad pieces of canvas provided at the ends with a hem 62 to receive a steel be readily attached to or detached from the slings, the same being accomplished by inserting or removing the rod 63. The straps 61 extend upwardly over the ends of the yokes 55, downwardly through the apertures 59, upwardly through the apertures 58, over the end of the yokes between said ends and the outer lap of the strap and is provided at the end with a slip buckle 66 embracing the upwardly extending portion of the strap. a
By this arrangement the straps and slings may be readily and quickly adjusted to support the patient.
The bar 51 is preferably tubular and into one end thereof is telescopically mounted a a rod 67 upon the outer end of which is rotatably mounted a yoke 68'for supporting a head sling 69, the sling 69 being supported by a strap 61 in the same manner as the sling 60. 70 indicates a set screw for securing the rod 67 in adjusted position. A similar rod 71 is provided at the opposite end of the bar 51 and equipped with a yoke 72 and sling 7 3 for supporting the uninjured leg if desired. This last mentioned appliance may be dispensed with and T have therefore illus: trated the same in Fig. 4 only. i
The operation of the device is obvious and does not need detail description.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a surgical appliance, a pair of arched frame members and a longitudinal member connecting the same, 1n combinatlon wlth means on said longitudlnal member for supporting a patientsbody, a block slidably mounted on said longitudinal member and provided with means to prevent rotation of the same thereon, a transverse rod 1 adjustably and reversibly secured to said block, a pulley swiveled to one end of said rod and an extension device supported by said pulley, substantially as described.
2. In a surgical appliance, a frame com- 1 prising end members and a longitudinal member, a drum rotatably mounted on said lso longitudinal member, a pair of flexible members connected at one end to said drum and adapted to be wound thereon, a floating bar secured to the free ends of said flexible members, a plurality of yokes adjustably mounted on said floating bar, a like number of body supporting slings and adjustable straps connecting said slings and said yokes, substantially as described.
3. In a surgical appliance, a floating bar and means for adjustably supporting the same, in combination with a plurality of transversely arranged yokes adjustably mounted on said bar, each end of each of said yokes being provided with a pair of apertures, a plurality of slings corresponding in number to said yokes, adjustable straps threaded through said apertures and a detachable connection between the free ends of said straps and the ends of said slings, substantially as described.

In a surgical appliance, a rotary drum, a pair of flexible members secured at one end to said drum and adapted to wind thereon, a floating bar provided adjacent each end with a pair of vertical longitudinally disposed slots, reinforcement mem bers secured to the under face of said bar between the slots of each pair, said flexible members extending through said slots, and means on said floating bar for supportlng a body, substantially as described.
5. In a surgical appliance, a bar, a yoke arranged transversely of said bar and adjustably secured thereto, straps depending from the ends of said yoke, the free ends of said strap each being formed with a loop, a sling provided at each end with a hem, the central portion of each hem being cut away to receive said loops, and rods extending through said loops and ends to detachably connect said straps with said sling, substantially as described.
