State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Coflin, of which the follow-' ing is a specification.

One obJectof the present invention 1S to provide a longitudinally extensible finished coflin, fully draped upon its inside and upon its outside and adapted to be elongated, thereby rendering it necessary to carry but a single size of each style of coflin, it being possible to elongate the coffin, as circumstances may demand.

Another object of the invention is to provide a coiiin, the lining and the covering of which, may be elongated, as the coflin proper is elongated.

It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.

With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details ofconstruction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The coffln herein disclosed is fashioned from metal, saving as specifically modified hereinafter, and comprises a primary section 1 and a secondary section 2. The secondary section 2 is mounted to slide inside of the primary section 1. The secondary section 2 is equipped at its top with a projecting flange 3 which slides on top of a flange 4, outstanding from the primary sec tion 1.

Secured to the ends of the sections 1 and 2, in their interiors, are end rails 5, side rails 6 being secured to the side walls of the sections. The adjacent ends of the side rails 6 are scarfed together as indicated at 7. The rails 5 and 6 are ordinarily fashioned from wood. The primary section 1, in the side walls and in the bottom carries bolt and nut connections 8, mounted to slide in slots 9 fashioned in the side walls and in the bottom of the secondary section 2. By loosening the bolt and nut connections 8, the coflin may be elongated to any desired extent, whereupon, when the bolt and nut connections 8 are tightened, the'coflin will be held at a predetermined length.

Secured to the inner faces of the side walls of the sections 1 and 2 are wooden blocks 10. Handles. 11 are shown, and securing ele ments 12 pass through the side walls of the sections 1 and 2 and unite the handles 11 with the blocks 10, the blocks 10 constituting means for receiving the securing elements 12.

The invention further includes a longitudinally extensible lid, fashioned from metal, ordinarily, the lid comprising a primary section 1% and a secondary section 15 which slides beneath the primary section 14, the sections 11 and 15 being provided with outstanding flanges 16, overlapped upon each other. Any suitable means (not shown) may be employed for connecting the flanges 16 with the flanges 3 and 1- of the coffin proper.

Located within the sections 1 and 2 is a textile lining 17. This lining 17 is tacked or otherwise secured to the end rails 5 and to the side rails 6. Intermediate its ends, the lining 17 is folded upon itself as shown at 18, so that when the coffin is elongated, the lining may be elongated likewise. Surrounding the exterior of the sections 1 and 2 is a covering 19 which is ordinarily fashioned from textile material. The covering 19 is folded upon itself, intermediate its ends, as shown at 20, so that the covering, like the lining 17, may be elongated readily. There is a lining 21 for the lid, the lining 21 being folded as shown at 22. The lid is provided with a covering 23, which is folded as shown at 24:- r

The primary section 14: of the lid is provided with a bolt and nut connection 25 adapted to move in a slot 26 which is formed in the secondary section 15 of the lid. This construction, obviously, permits the lid to be elongated to correspond with the length of the cofiin, it being possible to retain the lid at any desired length.

It Will be understood that the folded portion 18 of the lining 17, the folded portion 20 of the covering 19, the folded portion 22 of the lining 21, and the folded portion 24L of the covering 23 may assume any desired form so as not to be offensive to the eye, elongation being'provided for.

It is to be noted that the blocks 10, in addition to their function as means for upholding the handles 11, serve to uphold, also, the side rails 6 to Which the lining 17 of the coflin is secured.

termediate portions only With continuous transverse folds permitting an elongation of the coverings and the linings in the direction of the length of the coffin only.
