Be it known that I, OLIvER W. CHLLDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nash, in the county of Grant, State of Oklahomzuhave invented a new and useful tion.
Improvement in Wire Cloth or Screen Machines, of which the following is a specificais always visible.

The present embodiment of the invention comprises a cabinet or casing of suitable size and with any desired ornamentation, and preferably composed of three sections, for convenience in shipping.
Each of the three sections 1 is the same, and all are supported on a suitable base 2. Each of the sections is provided with a plurality of separate compartments 3, nine in the present instance, and a holder 4, of trough shape, is held in each compartment. Each holder is provided with a lateral flange 5 at one of its side edges, and with a facing plate or front 4 at its front end. A handle 6 is secured to each plate 4*, and the said plate and handle extend outside of the cabinet. Each of the plates 4 is provided with an opening 7 at its center, and each opening is closed by a sheet 8 of transparent material, as, for instance, glass. The opening is circular, and the edges of the plate 4 extend beyond the holder to form a stop for limita ing the inward movement of the holder. A clip 9 issecured to the upper edge of each end of the holder, and the ends of a bar 10 are held beneath the clips.
The bar 10 has its ends rabbeted, as shown at 11, and the shoulder formed between the rabbeted portion and the main portion engages the inner face of the adjacent end to prevent longitudinal movement of the bar. A roller 12 provided at its ends with journal pins 13 and 14 is arranged longitudinally of each holder, the pin 13 being journaled in an opening 15 in the rear end of the holder, and the pin 14 in a slot or recess 16 in the front end. The roller is also provided with an. annular series of teeth 17 near its front end, and a pinion 18 is secured to the journal pin 14. The pinion meshes wit-h a gear wheel 19 on a shaft 20 journaled between the front end of theholder and a plate 21 arranged transversely of the holder near the said front end. The plate 21 is faced with metal on both faces, as indicated at 22, and a similar facing 23 is arranged 011 the inner face of each end of the holder.
A block or filling 24 is arranged between the plate 21 and the front of the holder at one side, and a recess 25 is formed at the other side for the indicating mechanism, of which the pinion 18, gear wheel 19 and shaft 20 are a part. A pinion 26 is seoured'to shaft 20 and meshes with a gear wheel 27 on a second shaft 28 journaled transversely of recess 25 in the plate 21 and front of the holder. A pinion 29 on shaft 28 meshes with a gear wheel 30 on a shaft 31 j ournaled at the center of opening 7, and extending through the front end of the holder into a recess 32 formed in the front face of the front end of the holder directly behind the opening 7. An indicating dial 33 is secured at the bottom of the said recess, and an indicator or hand 34 is securedto the front end of shaft 31 in the said recess 32.
The indicator cooperates with the dial to indicate the operation of the roller 12, and the outer face of the dial is provided with an annular series of graduations 35, and with an annular series of indicating numerals 36 inside the series of graduations. A separate measuring device is provided, and the said device is held in a casing 37, which may be arranged, as shown in Fig. 1, on one of the sections of the cabinet. The said device is provided with a compartment or trough 38 at its rear for receiving the holders l, and a cutting device is arranged at the front of the said compartment. The cutting device comprises a ledger blade 39 secured to the front wall of the compartment, and a movable blade l0 cooperating with the ledger blade, and pivotedto the ledger blade at ell. The blade a0 is also provided with a handle 4-2 for operating the same, and the said blades extend the full length of the compartment 38. The wire cloth 43 is placed in the trough in a roll, Fig. l, and the free end thereof is passed over the roller 12. Whenever the free end of the cloth is drawn outwardly the roller will be rotated and will operate the indicator 34.
A roller a l is arranged in front of the ledger blade, the said roller having journal pins :5 which are secured in inclined slots L6 in the casing 37. A crank l? is fitted on the outer end, of one journal pin, which is iade polygonal to receive the crank. The roller is provided with a longitudinal groove or recess a8 for receiving the free end of the cloth, and clips lt) are secured to the roller in the recess for holding the said end. The said clips engage and hold the end of the cloth, and when the roller is turned by the crank the cloth will be wound on the roller and will be drawn from the holder, rotating at the same time roller A substantially U-shaped bracket comprising a body 50 and arms 51, 51' is arranged in front of the roller id and the body 50 is journaled in bearings 52, on the frame or casing 37. A shaft is journaled in the upper end of the arm 51 and a toothed wheel 5st is secured to one end of the shaft. A casing is held at the upper end of arm 51, and the other end of shaft 53 is journaled in the casing at the center thereof. The casing is composed of a ring having a transparent closure 56 at one end, and a dial 57 is held in the ring near the closure 56. The casing is held in a ring or hearing sleeve 58 at the upper end of arm 51, and a handle 59 is provided at the top of ring 58. The dial 57 has a central opening, and a gear wheel 60 is provided with an arbor 61 for engaging shaft 58, the said arbor extending through the opening of the dial and having an indicator or hand 62 between the dial and the closure. An indicator or hand 63 is secured to the shaft between the dial and the closure, and the gear iv ieel ("7O meshes with a pinion or, rigid with a gear wheel (35 on a pin 66 extending rearwardly from the dial. rear end of the pin is held in a bearing 67 on a three armed frame 68, having two of its arms secured to the casing and having a bearing for shaft 53 at its center, and the gear wheel meshes with a pinion 69 on the shaft.

indicate on the dial the amount of cloth wound on roller 44. The cloth as it winds on the roller rotates wheel 5%, which is swung over against the roll by handle 59. Two cales 70 and 71 are provided on dial 57, the hand (32 cooperating with scale 70 and hand 63 with scale 71.
The arm 51 is engaged by a spring 7:2 connected at one end to the arm, and at the Y the spring acting to hold the frame 50, 51, 51 with the wheel 5% in engagement with the cloth. A sprin clip 74 is secured to the casing for engaging arm 51 and holding the frame in the above position.
When it is desired to remove a predetermined amount of cloth from any holder, the particular holder is removed from the cabinet and placed in trough or compartment 38 of the measuring device. the cloth is drawn over roller 2, under bar 10, between blades 39-40, and is then connected to roller ll by means of clip 49. The frame 50, 51, 51 is swung rearwardly to bring wheel 5a into engagement with the cloth on the roller at the groove l8. The indicators 62 and 63 are at Zero on the scales, and when the roller 4a is rotated by crank 47 the cloth is wound upon the roller ll, and the indicators 62 and 63 indicate the amount wound on the dial 5?. hen the proper amount is indicated, the blade l0 is operated to cut the cloth, and the roll of cloth may be slipped from roller a l. The roller 12 has meanwhile been operated to operate the indicator 34., which indicates what amount of cloth remains in the holder.
A weight 75 Fig. 1, is provided for returning the indicator (52 and 63 to zero after the swinging frame has been swung forward to release the wheel 54 from the cloth. The said weight is connected to one end of a cord 76, whose other end is connected to the toothed wheel 54:, at 7 7, and a turn of the cord is wound around. the shaft The indicating mechanism at the end of each holder indicates the amount of cloth on the roll. The indicator is arranged to operate when the cloth is wound or unwound from the roll, and with no cloth on the roll the indicator stands at zero, indicating the fact that there is no cloth on the roll. As the cloth winds on the roll the indicator commences to register and after the win ding has been finished, the indicator will indicate the amount of cloth on the roll. Say for instance, that there are 100 yards on the roll. Should now for instance 10 yards be drawn off and cut away, the indicator will be moved in the reverse direction to that which it was moved when the cloth was being wound on the roll, and will indicate that there are but yards now on the roll instead of as before. During the winding of the cloth. the indicator or hand moves clock- The free end of wise, while during the unwinding or the withdrawing of the cloth the indicator moves anti-clockwise.

A device of the character specified, comprising a cabinet having a plurality of compartments, a substantially trough shaped holder for wire cloth in each compartment, a roller journaled longitudinally of each holder and having an annular series of spurs or teeth for engagement by the cloth as it passes from the holder to rotate said roller, an indicating device at the front end of the holder, said device comprising a dial, the front end of the holder having an opening at the dial, an indicator cooperating with the dial, and a connection between the roller and the indicator for operating the same, a receptacle supported by the cabinet for receiving the individual holders, a roller journaled in front of the receptacle and having means for gripping the end of the clot-h, manual means for turning the roller, a fixed cutting blade at the front of the receptacle over which the cloth passes, a movable blade pivoted at one end to the fixed blade, an indicating device, a shaft for operating said device, a toothed wheel on the shaft for engaging the cloth as it winds on the roller to rotate the shaft, a frame mounted to swing toward and from the roller to bring the toothed wheel into or out of engagement with the cloth, a spring drawing said frame toward the roller, and means for locking the frame with the wheel in engagement with the cloth. 1

A device of the character specified, comprising a cabinet having a plurality of compartments, a substantially trough shaped holder for wire cloth in each compartment, a roller journaled longitudinally of each holder and having an annular series of spurs or teeth for engagement by the cloth as it passes from the holder to rotate said roller, an indicating device at the front end of the holder, said device comprising a dial, the front end of the holder having an opening at the dial, an indicator cooperating with the dial, and a connection between the roller and the indicator for operating the same, a receptacle supported by the cabinet for receiving the individual holders, a roller journaled in front of the receptacle and having means for gripping the end of the cloth, manual means for turning the roller, an indicating device, a shaft for operating said device, a toothed wheel on the shaft for engaging the cloth as it winds on the roller to rotate the shaft, a frame mounted to swing toward and from the roller to bring the toothed wheel into or out of engagement with the cloth, a spring drawing said frame toward the roller, and means for locking the frame with the wheel in engagementwith the cloth.

A device of the character specified, comprising a cabinet having a plurality of compartments, a substantially trough shaped holder for wire cloth in each compartment, a roller journaled longitudinally of each holder and having an annular series of spurs or teeth for engagement by the cloth as it passes from the holder to rotate said roller,
an indicating device at the front of the holder, and a connection between the roller and the said device for operating the same.

In a device of the character specified, a holder trough shaped in cross section and having a compartment at its front end, and a central opening in its front extending into the compartment, an indicating device in the said compartment, said device comprising a dial behind the opening and an indicator cooperating with the dial, a transparent cover for the opening, a roller journaled longitudinally of the holder and having an annular'series of teeth for engagement by the cloth to rotate the roller, and a connection between the roller and the indicator for operating said indicator.

In a device of the character specified, a holder trough shaped in cross section and having a compartment at its front end, and a central opening in its front extending int-o the compartment, an indicating device in the said compartment, and visible through the opening, a roller journaled longitudinally of the holder and having teeth for engagement by the cloth to rotate the roller, and a connection between the roller and the indicating device for operating the said device.
7. A device of the character specified,
comprising a cabinet having a plurality of compartments, a trough shaped holder in each compartment for holding a roll of Wire cloth, a toothed roller in each holder over which the cloth passes, an indicating device for each holder operated by the roller, for indicating the amount of cloth remaining in the holder, a receptacle on the cabinet for receiving the individual holders, a roller 10 having means for engaging the end of the v cloth, means for turning the roller to Wind OLIVER WV. CHILDS.
