Description
i'nitantg f Letters Arana No. 107,691,
i y WILLIAM` ii-Enns or,d saursauoisoo; (millionen-A.`
data september 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT lIn sAsH-HoLnl-ns.
To all whom it may concer-n y Be` it known that I, WILLIAM F. KELLs,`of San Francisco, 'in ,the county of vSan Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks and do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full,*c1ear, and Vexact descripf` tion thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying ldrawing' and] to the letters `of reference `marked thereon, `making a part ofthis` specification.`
` The nature of. my invention,l consistsin the con# struction, and .arrangement ofl al sash-lock, as will be Ahereinafter fully vset forth. .t c t v i In order to enable t others- 'skilled in the art to 'which my invention appertains to makeand use the same, IY will now proceed, to .".dcscribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which?,` y 5 Figure 1 is a horizontal section 5 and Figure` 2, a jvertical section of my improved sashlcck; '1 t l y jFigni'eB is a side` view of the key which operatesY the boltof the lock; i
Figure 4 represents aview of the4 escutchcon, proy videdwith adog, which secures' the lock in its place.
A-rpresents a plate, of any suitable dimensions,`
provided on its `inner side with two ears, al), standl ing at right angles with 'the plate.
' The inner end ofthe ear b is bent at `right angles, as shown in iig. 1, in the direction toward the ear a.
Through the end of the ear; 11,. and through the plate, passkestthe-'bolt B, said bolt being located close Yto the main portion of the ear b, and its line of moi tion beingatgright.angles with 4the plateA.
g In the upper sideof the bolt B, are two notches.
as shownin tig. 2, i"n which the spring C, attached to the ear b, lworks in the same manner as a common door-bolt. VI may dispense with this spring, and make the bolt plain, and in some cases I apply the spring C in front ofthe key-shaft. i
In the under sideof the bolt is a vertical slot, in
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan: of the same -`which the ward works, said ward being attached to the shaft d, which has its bearings in the two ears o b, the wardY and shaft' together forming thekey for operating the bolt.
` .From the shaft d an arm, j, passes outward, through a vertical slot in the plate-A, and` on itsfouter `end is attached a knob, h. i g
The plate A, with its attachments, is inserted in a v recessl cut in thev window-frame or casing, and in the edge ofthe sash is inserted a rack-bar, D, having the open spaces of such a size that the bolt B can readily pass into thefsanie. Y
By raising the, arm or leverf, lthe bolt B is drawn inward, and the, sash can be raised or lowered at will, and byi-Io\vering..ftl1e'said arm j, the bolt is moved outward, holding 4the sash atlany height desired.
This invention obviates the necessity of sash-cords, pulleys, and separate fastening. p
vThis lock may be used on windows in houses, carwindows, steamboat-windows, or any place where sashes are to be raised and lowered.
When-,it is desired to'secnre the window in its place,
the dog, which is pivoted-to the escutcheon, is swung around, and grasps thevsha'ft inside ofthe knob. HavingY thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is= The combination ofthe bolt B and key d e, with its arln or lever, f, at right angles to it, all constructed as described, and arranged with the plate A and ears a b, and operating with, the 'rack-bar D, substantially as and for thepurposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingrI have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of' September, i870.
