WIRING MECHANISM FOR HAY-BALERS Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may coucern Be it known that I, ALEXis L. IJABIAR) a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vining Mechanism for Hay-Balers; and I do hereby do clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to presses, and it more particularly relates to an improved wire-applying mechanism for baling presses.
An object of the invention is to provide for quickly and easily passing the tie-wires through a baling press of ordinary construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be operated independently of and without the necessity for using the ordinary grooved blocks or plates which have heretofore been necessary in order to pass the wires through the press, and, another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism. oi. this character which simple and economical of construction, convenient and easy of operation, and thoroughly practical and eflicient.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter and in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which supplement this specification, Figures 1, 2 and 3 are top plan views, illustrating my improved wire-applying mechanism on an ordinary hay-baling press, a portion of the top of said press being broken away, and Fig. 4 is an end elevation view of the press and wire-applying mechanism, as viewed from the discharge end of the press.
In these drawings, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts, throughout the several views; the body of the press consists of a bottom or floor 5, side walls 6 and a top 7, the latter being. provided with a teed-opening 8 through which hay, or other material to be pressed may be fed. into the press chamber; said press chamber constituting the space between the walls 6. An ordinary piston or plunger head 9 is adapted to be reciproeated within the press chamber, by any usual or preferred means, so as to pass back and forth below the opening 8 and to carry the hay against the tie-wires l0, and to conipress said. hay against. the previously forn'ied bale of hay, and finally to 'lorce the completed halo of hay and its tie-wires into such. position that the latter .may be quickly and easily brought into proper position for tying around said completed bale, and at the same time leaving the succeeding tie-wires in proper position for engagement with the succeeding bale to be formed.
My llllpl'OVQfl wire-applying mechanism may be applied to and used with any ordinary baling press; but, in order that the present application thereof may be more perfectly understood, it may be well to explain that the present press has open sides extending from the press chamber to the discharged end. In other words, there are noside walls connectingthe floor 5 and top 7 between the ends of the walls 6 and the discharge end. Said discharge end is provided with side hip-s 11 which are apertured for the reception of bolts 19, and by means of these bolts the said floor and. top may be caused to converge in the direction of the discharge end, so as to cause the bales to bind, and thereby provide a tension and a resistance to the movement of said bales through. the press, so that when the plunger 9 carries the feeds of hay against the previously formed bal said hay is siilbjected to considerable p1 re before said resistance is overcome, and, obviously, this resistance may be increased or decreased by simply changing the positioi'i of the respective nuts on the bolts 12.
Upon one or the side walls 6 is a pair of studs or stub axles 13 upon which the spools 1 1 are. mounted; said spools constituting means for supplying the tie-wires 10. Rollerr; 15 and 16 are mounted upon the edge of the wall 6 which. supports the spools, and the wires 10 pass over the rollers and the rollers 16, into proper position to be en.- gaged by forks 17, the latter being formed on the respective ends of pusher. rods 18.
These pusher rods are secured to a pusher head 19, said pusher head being provided with sleeves or guide elements 20 which are slidably mounted upon a supporting frame 21. This supporting train is preferably formed from a length of rod which into U-shape and has its end nor-ti secured to the top and floor of the p I adjacent to the press cha her. The sides of the lrzune 21 are parallel with each other, and constitute tracks or guides on which the sleeves 20 are adapted to slide.
An arm 24 is secured to the bottom of the press and extends laterally beyond the end of the frame 21 and has a helical spring 25 connected thereto, one nd of said spring being connected to the pusher head 17 so that said pusher head is normally held in the position shown in l, 3 and i.
A pull-rod 26 is provided with a handle 27 and is connected to the head 19 at 28, so that said head may be dra n along the guides 23 against the action of the spring 25 into the position shown in F a.
In operation, assuming that several bales have been completed and it is now desired to make another bale, a feed of hay is placed in the press chamber, through the opening 8, while the several parts are in the position shown in Fig, 2, or immediately after the pusher head and pusher recs have returned into their respective normal position, whereupon, the plunger 9 is caused to move forward and to compress this feed of hay against tiewires 10 and against the previously formed bale, thereby causing said previously formed bale to move slightly forward (see Fig. 3), and this operation is repeated with each successive feed of hay until one of the previously formed bales is discharged from the press, whereupon, this newly formed bale is completed, and the tie-wires and pusher rods are now in the position shown in Fig. 1. Immediately after the return of the plunger 9 from its position against the newly formed bale, the operator, who stands on the positioned side of the press from the spools 14C, grasps the handle 27 and pulls the pusher head along the guides 23, so as to bring the pusher rods through the press, whereupon, the tie-wires are engaged the forks l7 and brought through the press, in the position shown in Fig. 2, and now, the wires are cut adjacent to the forks 17, so that the bale may be tied with a portion of the respective wires, the other portion remaining in the position shown in Fig. after the pusher rods have been returned to their respective normal position by the spring It will be seen that I have provided a wire-applying mechanism which is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects in a thoroughly practical and etficient manner.
I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement of pairs, as herewith illustrated and described; thus my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the claims.
I claim:
.1. A device of the class described having a U-shaped guide secured adjacent the press chamber, forked pusher rods slidablymounted on said guide, a pull rod secured to said pusher rods and extending over said press chamber, and rollers secured at right angles to each other on said press chamber adjacent the forked ends of said pusher rods, said rollers adapted to guide wires into alinement with the pusher rods.
9. The combination in a baling press of a press chamber, a plunger adapted to be reciprocated therein, a lateral U-shaped guide secured near the press chamber, a pusher head slidably moiuited on said guide, pusher rods secured in said pusher head and adapted to engage with tie-wires, a pull rod secured to the pusher head for actuating the same whereby the wires are passed into the path of the plunger, said puller rod extending over said press chamber, an arm secured to the press near the bottom thereof and extending laterally beyond the end of said guide, and a spring secured at one end to said arm and at the opposite end to said pusher head for normally holding the rods in an outward position.
An attachment for balers comprising a li -shaped guide secured adjacent the press chamber, forked pusher rods slidably mounted on said guide, a pull rod secured to said pusher rods and extending over said press chamber, rollers secured at right angles to each other on said press chamber adjacent the forked ends of said pusherrods, and adapted to guide wires into alinement with the pusher rods, and means for normally holding said pusher rods out of engagement with the wires.
4:. Sin attachment for balers comprising a U-shapcd guide secured adjacent the press chamber, rollers secured at right angles to each other on said press chamber, and approximately in the vertical plane of said guide, said rollers adapted to guide wires, and means carried by said guide for entie wires at a point adjacent the rollers for passing the wires into the path of the plunger.
