UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR L. BOWERS, OF OLIVE BRANCH, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ASA J. WILBOURN, F OLIVE BRANCH, ILLINOIS.
BALING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application filed December 2, 1919. Serial No. 341,914.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. Bownns, a citizen of the United States, ,residing at Olive Branch, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Ealing-Press, of which the following is .a specification.
This invention relates to machines for baling hay and the like, one of its objects being to provide means whereby the material, after being pressed intola bale of desired dimensions can be held under compression without stopping the movement of the compressing follower and until the bale has been tied, after which the parts can be reset and the formation of another bale proceeded with.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which .is simple and efficient and can be controlled readily.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain noveldetails of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described'and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing Vany of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the'accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a baling press having the present im' Y provements applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section through a portion thereof on line 2-2, Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts disengaged.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a portion of a press structure provided with a reciprocatlng plunger or follower 2 adapted to be driven by any mechanism desired. This ,plungerV is provided with a front section 3 having Vnotches 4 in opposed sides thereof and also provided, in its front face with transverse grooves 5 for the reception of the needles and ties during the operation of tying the bale. Pivotally mounted on oppositeV sides of the plunger 2 are levers 6 each of which has a head 7 adapted to be pressed into one of the notches 4 by a spring 8 interposed between one end of the lever and the Wall of the plunger.
Slidably mounted on the side of the structure l in the paths of the levers 6 is a releasing plate 9 having terminal wings 10 provided with slots 1l for the reception of fastening bolts 12 or the like.
Under ordinary conditions the heads 7 of the levers arel seated in the notches 4 so that the section 3 is thus fastened to the follower or plunger 2. Thus said section will reciprocate with the plunger and compress material placed in the path thereof. During this operation the plate is adjusted out of the path of the levers. Vhen a suiiicient amount of material has been compressed the plate 9 is adjusted toward the plunger so that on the next stroke of said plunger the levers will move against the-plate and be shifted against the action of the springs 8.
Thus the heads of the levers will be with-- drawn from the notches 4 and the section 3 will be left stationary while the plunger 2 continues to reciprocate. The bale can then be tied and on completion of the tying operation the plate 9 can be moved back from the paths of the levers so that on the neXt Y stroke of the plunger the heads` 7 will snap into the notches 4 and couple the section 3 to the plunger. V
It is to be understood that the present improvements can be applied to various makes of baling presses and that the levers 6 and plate 9 can be located at one or both sides of the machine.
What is claimed is z-f 1. In a baling press the combination with a plunger, of a tie receiving front section, vmeans for fastening the sections together, and means movable into and out of active position for unfastening the said section from the plunger and maintaining them Vdisconnected. Y A
2. In a baling press the combination with 10oVA a plunger, of a front section having a tie receiving slot, a .catch carried by the plunger Y for engaging said section and holding it to v the plunger, and means movable into the path of the catch for disengaging it from the front section and holding it disengaged during the reciprocation of the plunger.
3. In a baling press the 4combination With a plunger, of a front section having a tie receiving slot, a spring controlled fastening In testimony that I claim the foregoing lever carried by the plunger and normally as my own, I have hereto allixed my signa- 10 engaging the front section to hold the secture in the presence oftWo Witnesses. tion and plunger together, and a releasing 5 plate adjustable into the path of the lever OSCAR L' BOWERS' to shift the lever and detach the front sec- Witnesses: tion from the plunger during the reciproca- FRED I-IASLAUER,
