To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AJDAM HEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connorsville, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bailing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to baling presses adapted for use in baling hay, straw or other suitable material and the objects of my improvements are to provide automatic mechanism for tying the bales; to provide the plunger head with twister gears; toprovide cutter arms for manipulating the tie wire; to provide novel connections with the plunger head for actuating said arms-at predetermined intervals; to provide automatic means for regulating the size of the bales and to provide simple and durable construction-and assemblage of the various parts for securing facility of operation and efficiency of action. These objects may be attained in the following described manner, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:- i

The lunger 6 is formed longitudinal wall 7 inclosmg a narrow chamber v8. Said wall is formed with transverse openings 9 and slots 11 extend therefrom through the face of the plunger. A shaft 12- 'ournaled in the plunger is provided with ment with pinion 10 andwhich carries an eccentric pin or roller 14 adapted to alternately engage with lever 15 fulcrumed on the frame and with a fixed stop 16 for turning said gear and shaft in respective opposite directions. in the plunger carries an intermediate gear 18 within chamber 8 and-may be actuated from pinion 10 by means of the shaft and bevel gear connections 19 therewith. Twister gears 21 journaled within the chamber 8 engage with the intermediate gear 18 therein and are each formed with a radial slot 22 adapted to register with the corresponding slot 11 in. the plunger. A plate 23 formed with racks 24 on itsopposite ed es and with a longitudinal track 25 is slida 1y mounted in guides 26 secured to the bottom 27 of the frame. A bar 28 pivotally secured at its front end tothe plunger is slidingly movable in the slotted bearings 29 which depend from the rack plate 23. Said bar is provided with a stop 31 nearits rear end and with -alaterally projecting lug 32 which is maintained in sliding engagement with the track under ayielding' pressure by means of a spring 33.
A spring actuated bolt 35 slidably mount: ed in bearing'36 on the rack plate is'adapted toautomatically engage 'with a transverse hole 37 in bar 28 for locking the plate move therewith. A transverse lug 38 .se; c'ured on. said bolt is formed with a 1 'tudinally inclined face 39 and provided with a spring actuated pin 41. Said pin is adapted to automatically enga c with a narrow inclined stop 42 which depends from the bottom 27 of the frame for preventing any rearward movement of the rack plate when the bolt 35 is disengaged from bar 28. When said bolt reengages bar 28 the pin 41 is A shaft 17 journaled with a middle thereby moved laterally out of engagement with the inclined stop for permitting the rack plate to again move with said bar.- A spring actuated guide pin 43 slidably mounted in a bracket 44 which depends from the bottom of the frame serves to engage with the inclined face 39 of lug 38 during the forward movement of the rack plate for moving the bolt- 35 out of engagement with the hole 37 inbar 28. The continued forward movement of the plunger with bar 28 brings the stop 31 thereon into engagement with the adjacent bearing 29 and moves the rack late a shortdistance farther for moving the bolt 35 clear of any contact with the side of said bar and also moves the pin 41 into engagement with the inclined stop 42 for locking the rack plate in longitudinal position.
A spring actuated switch 40 pivotally-secured to the track 25 slidably engages with lug 32 on bar 28 for deflecting said bar in its forward movement with hole 37 therein out of registration with the bolt 35 thereby preventing the engagement of said bolt therewith after it is released from guide pin 43. During the rearward movement of bar 28 lug 32 thereon rides on the track and under the switch with the hole 37 in registered position for the automatic engagement of the released bolt 35 therewith for reciprocating the rack plate. 1 i i A bell crank lever 50 pivotally mounted on bracket 44 engages with the guide pin 43 for moving it out. of engagement with the inclined lug 38 and thereby permitting the bolt '35 to contact with the bar 28 and simultaneously move the pin 41 laterally out of engagement with the inclined stop 42. Said bolt being now released automatically engages with the hole 37 whenin registration therewith during the rearward stroke of bar 28 for reciprocating the rack plate with said bar.' Abell crank lever 45 pivot-ally secured on, a bracket 46 which depends from the bottom of the frame is connected at one end with the free end of lever 50 by means of a rod 47. An idle notched wheel 48 journaled in bracket 46 carries an eccentric escapement pin 49 for intercepting the free end of lever 45 and thereby actuating lever 50 through its connections therewith for moving the guide pin 43 to release the bolt 35. The periphery of said wheel projects through a slot in the bottom of the frame and within the chute 2. The contact of the moving bales in the chute therewith turns the wheel with the pin 49 into contact with lever 45 for releasing the bolt 35 at'predetermined intervals for limiting the length of the bales to correspond to the size of the wheel. Vertical shafts 51 and 52 journaled on opposite sides of the frame are provided with pinions 53 in engagement with the respective racks 24 on the rack plate 23. Cooperating curved arms 54 and 55 secured on the respective shafts are movable thereby through the corresponding opening 9 in the;
middle wall 7 of the plunger 6 as shown in Fig. 7. An angular clamping finger 5,6' p1"ovided with a transverse pin 57 and'pi'votally secured on the extremity ofeacharm 54 may be maintained in either the closed pr open position under a yielding pressure by means of the sliding engagement of a spring 58 with said pin. Said finger cooperates with the adjacent portion ofsaid arm to which it is attached for either clamping or releasing the end portion of the tie wire 59.
A blade 61 for cutting off the tie wire and also a curved member 62 actuated thereby for clamping said wire are pivotally mounted eccentric to each other on the extremity of each arm 55. Said blade may be maintained in either the closed or the open position under a yielding pressure by the sliding engagement of the transverse pin 63 therein with the pring 64. The pin 63 on the blade movably engages with the cam notch 66' formed in the. edge of said member for actuating it into clamping position with the tie wire 59. The interior'edge of member 62 is curved concentric to the pivotal center of the blade 61 for the movable engagement of pin 63 thereon for maintaining said member in the clamping position during the cutting movement of the cutter 61. The tie wire 59 for each pair of arms is carried by a separate spool 68 supported on v the cutter 61 by means of idle pulleys 71 and 72 on arm 55 thence around therear end of the'b'ale 73 and terminates in being securely clamped on arm 54 by means of finger '56 thereon. The rearward movement of the rack plate carries the arms 54' and 55 through the corresponding opening 9 in the wall of the plunger and with the wire in a crossed position within the radial slot 22in the corresponding twister 21 the slotted bracket Z4 secured on the rack plate simul-' taneously e1 ages with and moves the lever 1'5 into engag ent with the-roller-14 on the segmental gear. The further movement of the rack plate causes the said'lever to move the segmental gear and the twisters throu h their connections therewith for twisting the crossed wire therein securely together as shown in Fig. 7. With the completion of the movement of the twisters the finger 56 by contact of its top portion with a boss 75 on the plunger is thrown open and releases the tie wire as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 10 and the cutter 61 by simultaneous contact with the boss 76 on the plunger actuatesthe member 62 into clamping engagement with the tie wire and then severs said wire between said member and the bale 7 3 as shown in Fig. 8. At the completion of the forward stroke of the rack plate it is disengaged from the luuger by means of the locking bolt 35 ant maintained immovable with the arms 54 and 55 in the open position until recngaged by the mechanism actuated by the wheel 48 after a full turn thereof by contact with the moving bales in chute 2. The contact of stop 16 with the roller 14 at the completion of the forward movement of the rack plate actuates the segmental gear with its connections to turn the twisters in the position shown in Fig. 5 to again receive the tie wire.
In operation, the reciprocating plunger presses the material rearwardly wit 1111 the chute to form the bale. The forming bale draws the tiewire slowly from the spool and around its rear end. The measuring wheel at predetern'iinedintervals actuates its connections to effect the engagement of the rack plate with the plunger thereby moving the arms with the tle wires in proper position within the twisters. The further movement of the rack plate with the plunger actua'testhe segmental gear by contact with the fulcrumed lever-to turn the twisters with the wires therein-for completing the tying of the bale. The finger clamps are then rethe further move-' leased from the end of the tie and reiingagcd with the tie wires leading from the spools and the com leted ties are severed from the tie wires lea ing from the spools. The completed ties are then discharged from: .the twister and through the slots-m the plunger and thetwisters are actuated by the -segmental gcar through the engagement of the 'two step lug therewith for imparting successive half turns thereto for permitting the tie wires to escape therethrough and in the proper position to be drawn fromthe spools and automatically around the succeeding bale. At the completion ot' each forward movement of the rack plate it is automatically disengaged from the plunger by means of the engagement of the locking bolt with the spring actuated stop.
Having fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is i 1. 2. The combination of a rectangular tubular frame,'a plunger head mounted to reciprocatetherein, and formed with an open slot through its face, a twister journaled in the plunger in registration with the slot therein, wire carrying arms pivotally'secured on respective opposite sides of the frame, means for intermittently actuating said arms to insert a crossed wire within the twister, and automatic means for actuating the twister at successive intervals in the stroke of the plunger for twisting and for releasing. the wire through said slot in the head. 3. The combination of a frame, a plunger head mounted to reciprocate therein and provided with a wire twister, carrying arms pivotally mounted on respective opposite sides of the frame for inserting a crossed wire within the twister, connections with the head for actuating the arms at predetermined intervals in its movement, and for actuating the twister.
4. The combination of a frame, a plunger head mounted to reciprocate therein and provided with a wire twister, driven connections with sald head, mechanism fen-inserting a crossed wire within the twister at predetermined intervals in the movement of the head, and means actuated by the movement of the head for actuating the twister intermittently.
5. The combination of a frame, a plunger head mounted to reciprocate therein, a twister carried by the head, arms pivotally secured on the frame for feeding wire to the twister at predetermined intervals in the movement of the head, and connections actuated, by the movement of the plunger for imparting intermittent motion to the twister.
6.
