a citizen of the United States, and a resi` dent of the city oi' Chicago, county of Cook, and State ot lllinois, have invented certain new and useful linproveinents in Rail-llastenings, ot' which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in rail itastenings and has for its object the production of a fastening through the medium oit which a rail may be secured to a tie without employing spikes or the like, such as are used at the present time for this purpose.

My invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The lower ends ot bolts l are connected with the upper ends of helical tension springs 9, the latter being threaded upon the lower ends of said bolts, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The lower hooked ends of said springs engage the perforated adjacent ends ot angular hoolted inen'ibers l0 which engage around the tic, as clearly shown in the several views, the upper ends ll of the members l0 being turned inwardlyr to engage over the tie in order to hold said members 10 in secure engagement with the tie. The arrangement is such that the springs 9 will exert a cous-tant pull or prese sure upon the bars 3 in order to securely hold the rails 9. upon the tie. lt it is desired to increase the tension ol" said spri it is only required to thread the saine ther up upon the bolts 7. rllhns, it will be seen, that the rails will be securely 'fastened to the ties and without the employment ott spikes or other analogous securing devices.

,While l have illustrated and described the preferred torni ot construction tor carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the ap pended claims.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
l. The combination with a tie and a rail mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rail to said tie, said means comprising a plate adapted to engage over the base of said rail; a hook member adapted to engage around said tie; and a tension spring connecting said plate and said hook member, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a tie and a pair of rails mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rails to said tie, said means comprising a bar arranged under and eX- tending between said rails; means engaging the bases of said rails for fastening the same to said bar; and means for resiliently fastening said bar to said tie, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a tie and a pair of rails mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rails to said tie, said means comprising a bar arranged under and eX- tending between said rails; means engaging the bases of said rails for fastening the same to said bar; means for resiliently fastening said bar to said tie7 said last mentioned means comnrising hook members engaging around said tie; and tension springs connecting the ends of said bars and said hook members, substantially as described.

The combination with a tie and a pair of rails mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rails to said tie, said means comprising a bar arranged under and ex'- tending between said rails; plat-es engaging the bases of said rails; bolts passing through said plates and said bars for holding said plates in clamping relation with said rail bases, said bolts engaging against the edges of said rail bases; and resilient means cooperating with said bolts for yieldingly fas,- tening said bars to said tie, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a tie and a pair of rails mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rails to said tie, said means comprising a bar arranged under and eX- tending between said rails, angular plates engaging the bases of said rails ;V fish plates arranged against the webs of said rails, said angular plates engaging against the outer sides of said sli plates and entering recesses provided in said sides of said fish plates; means for securing said angular plates to said bars; and tension springs connecting said bars with ysaid tie, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a tie and a pair of rails mounted upon said tie, of means for fastening said rails to said tie, said means comprising a pair of bars arranged under and extending between said rails and along the longitudinal edges of said tie; angular plates engaging the bases of said rails; fish plates engaging against the outer sides of said sli plates; means for securing said angular plates to said bars; and resilient means for fastening the ends of said bar to said tie7 substantially as described.
