APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, 1913.

UNTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IERMANN NIKODEIII, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
FOLDING BEST FOR FIREARMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN NIKODEM, subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Hamburg, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Rests for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a folding rest for firearms and consists in providing heads on the upper ends of the supporting legs which are adapted to pivot about an axis in a casing, said heads automatically splaying apart the supporting legs, by means of guides provided on the casing, when the legs are swung into position for use, while other guides automatically cause the legs to be brought close together when the support is folded.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of rest made in accordance with this invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rest shown folded up; Fig. 2 is a corresponding front elevation; Fig. 3 a view of the interior of the empty case showing the guides and a cotter; Fig. 4 is a detail view partly in section showing the positions occupied by the heads of the legs when the legs are opened; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the heads attached to the supporting legs; Fig. 6 is a detail View partly in section showing the positions occupied by the heads of the legs when the legs are closed.
Spring clips 5, for holding the stock of the gun, are provided on the casing a. The legs (Z, provided with feet 0, are adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 9, 1913.

Serial No. 759,906.
pivot, by means of their heads 6, about a pin f, and are adapted to be turned by the tension springs 9 when the detent 2' is disengaged from the notch n in the head 6 by pressing on'the finger lever h. The legs thereupon turn through an angle of 90 and at the same time are splayed apart owing to the upper ends of the heads 6 being pressed together by the guide checks 7s provided in the casin a (Fig. he legs can be locked in this position by inserting the cotter Z in the aperture 722-. To fold up the support, the cotter Z, being taken out of the aperture m, the legs are turned around until the detent z reengages in the notch n of the head 6. At the same time the legs are brought together automatically by means of guide strips 0 arranged laterally inside the casing 44 (Fig. 6).
Claim:
In a folding rest for firearms, in combination, a casing, legs pivotally supported thereby, means within said casing to engage the ends of said legs and force them to come together when they are moved into their inoperative positions and means within said casing to engage said legs to force them apart when they are moved into their operative positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMANN NIKODEM.
