APPLIOATION FILED APB. 2z, 1912.

JEROME C. FAIRFELD, OI? CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
'FOLDNG BOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Pct. 21,1913.
Application filed April 22, 1912. Serial No. 692,291.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Juno-Mn C. FAIRFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bob sters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined bolster and roll for beds the object being to provide a device which can be interchangeable either as a fiat bolster or a round roll, and a still further object is to provide a device which, when arranged as a bolster' can be used either in a flat or horizontal position or turned up against the head board of the bed after the manner of pillow-sham holder.
"With these objects in view, my invention consists essentially in the employment of two end frames connected by a series of cross strips and covered with a suitable fabric covering, the end frame consisting of two pieces of spring metal hinged together at their ends and capable of being held in close proximity to each other in the form of an oval or bowed to provide a circle.
The invention consists also in a novel means whereby the end frame are held in circular form and the invention consists still further in certain details hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing a roll constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2. is the same device arranged as a flat bolster. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device devoid of the cover and turned up out of the way. Fig. 4e is a view showing one of the end frames arranged in circular form. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 515 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view showing in detail the hinged connections between the sections of the end frames and also the eye to which the operating string is attached and the loop through which it works.
ln the practical embodiment of my invention, l employ two end frames, each being constructed of two pieces of spring metal A and A', hinged at their ends as shown at B and these two sectional metallic frames are connected by means of a series of fiat cross strips G which may be of any desired material. One of the hinges B has an eye D,
connected thereto upon the inner side and attached to this eye l) is a cord E having a knob or tassel E upon the opposite end and intermediate its ends is a knot E2, which knot is adapted to engage the narrow portion of a loop F, which is arranged upon the inner side of the section A, adjacent the hinge B and it will be understood that by pulling the cord E through the loop F the members A and A are bowed as shown in Fig. Li, so as to produce a complete circle and the cord is then forced down into the reduced portion of the loop F so that the knot E2 will engage said loop as most clearly shown in Fig. 5 and thereby lock the frame in its opened or circular formation. 'The end frames and cross strips are thoroughly covered by a fabric covering Gr, of any suitable material and the ends drawn together by a suitable drawstring.
ll indicates a bracket which is clamped to the bed post by means of a bolt and nut l, and the circular frames are hinged to these brackets as shown at H in Figs. l and 5. These brackets can be adjusted at the proper point upon the bed posts and when it is desired to turn the bolster up against the head board the cord is released so as to permit the bolster to fold flat and then the entire device is turned upwardly after the manner of a pillow-sham holder as most clearly shown in Fig. 3.
It will thus be seen that l provide a col lapsible device capable of being used either as a roll or as a flat bolster and furthermore it will be noted that the said bolster can be arranged either in a horizontal position or turned up against the head board as preferred.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A combined bolster and roll comprising the collapsible end frames, connecting strips and fabric covering, each end frame consisting of two sections of spring metal hinged together at their end and capable of being bowed to produce the complete circle, a cord connected to the sections at their juncture at one side, a loop arranged adjacent the joint of the sections at the opposite side, said cord having a knot adapted to engage said loop when the sections are bowed, as set forth.
2. A combined bolster and roll comprising in combination the collapsible end sect-ions consisting of tWo sections hinged together, .to be .secured to the .bed post and to which Y the connecting strips, the fabric covering, the collapsible end frames are hinged, as dethe eye attached to one of the hinges, the scribed.
