JOHN OAMVPBELL,l AND ADDISON WATSON, or LONDONQOHIO Latas mantra. 101,659, daad september v27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT iN-'FLooD-GATES.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part' of the same.
Beit-known that we, .JOHN CAMPBELL and ADDI- 4son?W'Atrsorl, of London, in thecOnnty of Madison `and State of Ohio, have invented a new andv useful Improvement in Flood-Gate;`and -we do hereby de- Glare that the following is fa full and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to theletters of referencermarked thereon. his invention' consists of aoOd-gate of peculiar construction, which is usedin connection with a chain and weight; Ehe details `of constrnctionaml manner of operation will be fully described'hereinafter.
In the drawingt l 4Figure l'represents a front elevation of in y improved Hood-gate; and y y Figure 2, a transverse sectional elevation of the same. l l f To enable others skilled in the art'tomake and u'se our invention7 we will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A Arepresent two posts, which are rmly set into the earthnpon eachsideofthe stream.
B represents the gate, which consist-s of the rollers b b l), securely journaledinthe gate-frame, andthe board b', asV shown. l l
The gateitself is alsosecurely journalcd in the posts A A'at its loweredge, in such manner as tO swing out from the post at the top.
o represents a chain or rope, one end of' which is securely attached to the gate-frame. l
This passes over -the roller @attached to one of the posts A, and has attached to its free end a weight,
c2, as shown. l
The operation is as follows:
The stream of water, when low, passes through between therollers b b b. When, however, its volume is increased, the gate yields tothe pressure, and swinging out from the pos-ts, permits 'thellood to pass, the
rollersenabling any lmatter that might otherwise `bef caught, to pass :freely over them. As soon as the" extreme pressure is removed by the passage ot'Y the flood the weight'draws the gate again to place.
it is not at all liableto get ont of order.
Having thus fnlly described onr invention, What we cla-im als new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gate B, with rollers b -b and board b', when combined with the postsA and used with the chain and weight, the parts being arranged as described, for
the purpose set forth. y
This specification signed and witnessed this 3d day of May, 1870.
