Description
Cnted tant @aient (itiijiiw,
Letters Patent No. 107,655, datedeptember?, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in theme Letter: Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CALVIN Braces, of Ansonia, in the count-y of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Melodeons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1`represents a longitudinal section of my improved attachment to melodeon.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to au improvement of the expression-chamber, for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 16,574 were granted to meon the 7th day of July, 1857.
The object of the present invention is to provide for a more even lnotion of the valve, and not to allow the sudden violent movements of the same, which are produced if thc air only acts on one side of its pivot.
The invention consists in the application to the said expression-chamber, of a balanced valve, which has two working parts that project from opposite sides of its pivot, so that when the air presses against one side of one arm, it will also at the same time press against the opposite side of the other arm. The
valve is thus nicely balanced,\and will not be suddenly and violently opened or closed. Its motions will consequently be even and gradual, producing the desired gradual change of swell.
A, in the drawing, represents the box or case, which, together with the bellows, B, constitutes my aforesaid expression-chamber.
C is the valve arranged therein. This valve is pivoted, at its ends, by pins or screws a a, to the seat or frame l), the pivots being in the middle of the ends as; indicated in fig. 2.
The valve projects thus from two sides of its pivots, having two working arms c and d, of which one acts against the frame b, the other against a shoulder, c, of the frame A, as shown in iig. 2. It is in the same figure clearly shown that the opposite sides of the valve abut against the two aforeuamed seats b and c, so that if the action of the air opens one arm ofthe valve it will open also the other arm, and bal ance the two arms on opposite sides with the desired effect.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent` The valve C, pivoted in the expression-chamber, so that both its arms c d are brought into action with opposite sides, as set forth.
JOHN CALVIN BRIGGS.
