To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY BOYD Tnsrr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a valve protecting device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a device in the form of a hood that can be easily and quickly placed over valves to prevent the same from being accidentally turned on or tampered with.

Another object of this invention is to provide a valve protecting device that is inexpensive to manufacture, durable and highly efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a device that has been especially designed for the gas valves that control the supply of gas to the oven of a gas stove, these valves being generally located in proximity to the floor or adjacent to the bottom of a stove, however, the valves are generally within easy reach of children and asphyxiation, explosion and other accidents have occurred by children turning on the gas valves unaware of the parents or occupants of a room. To avoid such accidents and prevent valves from beingtampered with I have devised a metallic hood that can be easily placed over the valves and supported by the gas supply pipe. The hood is held in position by a portion of the stove and easy access can be had to the valves when it is desired to turn 011 the gas and ignite the gas within the oven.

My invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a stove partly broken aw.y and partly in section illustrating the device in position, Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached protecting device.

7 denotes vertical bars having the lower ends thereof connected to the outer wall 8 of the hood and the upper ends thereof provided with extensible and adjustable sections 7* that are held in engagement with said bars by suitable clamping means 6 The sections 7' and the bars 7 are adapted to be held by a tiltable extension or shelf 9 of the stove 1, said shelf or extension being common to various makes of gas stoves.

The rear portion of the hood and also the bottom thereof is open and when the hood is positioned it is arranged in close proximity to the side of the stove so that it is impossible for the valves to be tampered with.

It is preferable to provide the hood with an inclined top whereby when the hood is tilted upon the pipe 3, the inner open side of the hood will provide clearance for adjusting the valves 2. To adjust the valves it is not necessary to completely remove the hood, since the bars 7 can be swung out of engagement with the stove and the hood turned until the valves are exposed.

It is thought that the utility of a device in accordance with this invention will be apparent as a safety factor in connection with gas stoves, and I would have it understood that my invention is susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A valve protecting device comprising a tiltable hood consisting of a top, a pair of end walls, a front wall and having an open rear and an open bottom, said end walls being notched for the mounting of the hood upon a supply pipe to house the regulating valve thereof, and a pair of vertical bars having their lower ends connected to said front wall, said hood capable of being tilted upon said pipe whereby access can be had to the valve.
