Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. SAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinson, in the county of Gadsden and State of Florida, have invented new and; useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the 1 following is a specification;
The present invention relates to improvements in rail joints. i
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a rail joint which will effectively support the meeting ends of the rail to prevent the sinking movement of either ofthe nails incident to the rolling stock passing thereover, as well as to eii'ectively overcome any tendency of the lateral movement of the rails at the joint.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a rail joint, of rail securing means which shall be connected directly with the ties as well as with the rail ends, but which will permit ofthe rails resting upon the said ties so that while the said railsat their joints are rigidly supported, the portions of the rails directly beyond the ends thereof resting upon the ties will be allowed the resiliency afforded by the ties, and danger of the chipping of the rails or the breakage of the rail ends' is entirely and effectively overcome. v I i It is a still further object of the invention to provide rail connecting members which shall have a locking engagement one with the other, so that accidental displacement or separation of the said members will be of fectively prevented.
\Vith' the above recited objects in view, and ot'herswhich will appear as-the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operativearrangement of pa ts set forth inthe following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

The member 1, which will hereinafter be referred to as the chair member, includes an angular side 3, the inner faceof which corresponding to the fishing spaces of the rails R upon the outersides of the saidrails. vertical member 4 of theangular side 3 is Y provided with a plurality of openings 5 which coincide in number and which aline' upon the outer face of thes'eid side and V which is of an angul'ar'shape corresponding to the shape of the said side 3. The upper edge. of the vertical member 4 of the side 8 conforms to the shape of the underfaces of the heads 01 balls of the rail ends adapted to enga e with the said balls-of the rails when the c air is arranged upon the rails. The reinforcing member 6 is adapte'd to have its upper edge also engaged beneath the balls of the rails R directly at the juncture of the ends of the 'said rails, and the reinforcing member 6 is of a sullicientwidth to ell fectively receive and support the saidheads at their meeting ends. The lower and angular portion of the member 6 is formed with a lip 7 which depends below the outer edge of the lower and angular portion 8 of the side 3. This lip is adapted to contact with the outer edges of the base flanges of the rails at the joint of the said rails,the lip being of a width equaling the width of the remainder of the reinforcing member 6. The angular base member 8 of the side 3 adjacent the ends of said side is formed with extensions 9, the u per walls of said extensions being arrange in a plane corresponding to the angular plane/-01" the outer faces of the base-8' of said side, and integrally formed with'the sides of said'extensions 9 are transversely arranged,plates 10 and 11 respectively. The angular member 3 is also designed to have its inner face at its ]11I1C ture with the portions at and 8 contact with the outer faces of the rails at the juncture of the webs and the base flanges of said rails.
The angular portion 21 has its inner face- .minates a suitable distance below the upper edge of the angle bar 2, so that the flangesof the wheels of the rolling stock, passing over the joint, will not be interfered with.

2. In a device for the purpose set-forth,
'the combination with two rail ends and ties joint including a chair having an angular member adapted to engage the fishing space upon one of the sides of the rails, said chair having the-base of its angular member extended adjacent its ends, thesaid extensions being provided-with integrally formed transversely arranged plates arranged in pairs, a connecting upper member for the upper edges of the plates, each of said members be-' ing provided with a longitudinally extending groove, an angle bar for the opposite faces of the rails, said bar being provided with extending tongues which are adapted to be received within the grooves of the connecting members of the plates, the said plates adapted to. engage two of the ties op posite the meeting ends of the rails and to have their upper edges disposed below the faces of the ties, means for securing the joint to the ties, and means for securing the chair to the angle bar.
3. In a rail joint, the combination with two rails and ties upon which the rails rest, of a chair, said chair including an angle plate adapted to conform to and engage within the fishing space upon one side of the rails, the said angular member being centrally formed with a reinforcement which underlies and engages with the heads of the i .rails at the meeting ends, the said angle member having its, horizontal flange extended adjacent its ends, each of the extendin members having a pair of spaced plates w iich are disposed transversely of the angle member andarranged below said angle merriber, the said plates adapted to straddle the two ties opposite the meeting ends of the 'rails and to be secured to the sides of the tie, a connecting member for the upper edges of the ends of the plates,,ea-ch of said memtwo ties and two rails resting upon the ties and having their meeting ends dis osed centrally between the ties, of a chair aving an angular side shaped to conformto the fishing space of the rails upon one of the sides extends beyond the longitudinal edge of said angular side and which is adapted to abut with the meeting edges of the base flanges of the rails, the said angular side being fprovided with extensions which project our the edge thereof adjacent the ends of the chair, reinforcing members integrally formed with the angular side and with the extensions, said extensions ha'ving laterally extending plates secured to each of the edges of the extensions,the said plates extending beyond and below-the angular, side of the chair and adapted to engage with and to be connected to the ties, an upper connecting member for the ends of each pair of plates, an angle bar adapted to engage Within the fishing spaces of the opposite sides of the rails, said angular bar being centrally provided with a brace reinforcement terminat ing in a downwardly extending tongue which is adapted to engage with the edges of the base flanges of the rail ends, the said angle bar having its horizontal member adjacent its ends provided with extending tongues, the said tongues adapted to engage the connecting members of the plates, means for securing the angle bar to the ties, and means for securing the angle bar to the rail ends and to the angular side of the chair of the joint.
