UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN A. REID, 0F DUENWEG, MISSOURI.
DOUBLETREE.
T 0 all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. REID, a citizen of the United States, resident of Duenweg, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Doubletrees; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
The invention has relation to whiilletrees, and particularly to an improved doubletree, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates an arcuate doubletree, having top and bottom plat- es 2, 2, riveted thereto at 3, 3, the
end portions of said plates being preferably extended in front of the doubletree at 4, 4, to provide for the reception of the swingletrees, which are pivoted within the extensions at 6, 6.
The lower arcuate reinforcing plate 2 of the doubletree rests upon the pole or tongue of the vehicle, a bracket 7 having rigid connection with the tongue at 7, and a pivotal connection with the doubletree at 7 and in order that the limited bearing surface of this plate may be increased to avoid undue wear upon the tongue with which it is in frictional engagement, the plate is provided with a short rear bearing extension 8, and a long trapezoidal front bearing extension 9, having a front edge 9, and front corners 9 said front extension serving also as a means of connection for oblique brace rods 10, 10. The brace rods have at their diverging forward ends connection with the ends of the lower reinforcing plate, and in- Specifieatfon ofLetters ratent.

clude within the same a recess 10, wherein the horses have leg room in backing. The 1nner converging ends of the brace rods are connected to the corners 9 of the front extension, and the outer edges of said rods merge into the front edge 9, of the exten sion, to guard said corners. The forward edge of the front extension 9, is located in rear of the ends of the reinforcing plates 2, 2.
The forward extension 9 of the lower plate projects in front of the middle of the doubletree, is of increasing width forwardly, and terminates in a wide front edge some distance in rear of the chord of the arc of the doubletree. The oblique brace rods are attached to the outer portions or corners of this front edge or end and to the ends of the doubletree. In this way the ends of the curved doubletree are enabled to be braced by short rods against each other, and against the central portion of the doubletree through this forward extension, and ample room is provided in rear of the inner arms of the swingletrees for movement of the legs of the horses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a doubletree, an arcuate body, an arcuate lower reinforcing plate for said body, having rivet connection therewith, a short rear bearing extension, and a long front bearing extension having a front edge in rear of the ends of said plate, oblique brace rods having at their outer forward ends connection with the ends of said reinforcing plate and at their inner rear ends connection with the corners of said front extension, to include a recess wherein the horses have leg room in backing, said front edge being at the rear of said recess.
2. In a doubletree, an arcuate body, an arcuate lower reinforcing plate for said body, having rivet connection therewith, a short rear bearing extension, and a long front trapezoidal bearing extension having forwardly diverging lateral edges and a front edge in rear of the ends of said plate, oblique brace rods having at their outer diverging ends connection with the ends of said reinforcing plate and at their inner converging ends connection with the corners of said trapezoidal extension, to include a recess merging into said front edges of the trapezoidal extension to guard said corners.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. REID.
