, To all whom, @'25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. MAT- 'r-Hnws, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Confectionery-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper receptacles and has relation more particularly to a paper box designed for holding confectionery and other articles of merchandise,
An object of this invention is to produce a paper box formed of a single piece of .material, means being provided for reinforcing the ends of the box, increasing its stability without waste of material.
A still further object of this invention is to produce an adjustable cover having novel means for retaining the said cover in elevated position or in a position at right. angles to the plane of the box so that advertising matter' displayed on the inner or outer surface of said cover may be observed, due to the fact that the said cover is held in an' elevated position.
A still further object of this invention is to produce .a cover holding device which is foldable between the y cover and the [box proper when the lid is to be closed, thersaid cover holding device being formed integral with the cover and produced from the same sheet of material without increasing the requirements in the way of stock for the manufacture of the box having the improvements thereon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully setforth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustratesa view in perspective of a box embodying the invention,I broken away; Fig. 2 illustrates a plan View of the blank from which the box is formed; and Fig.- 3 illustrates a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.-
In these drawings, I havel shown a'blank formed, the said blank having a 'central neck 4 which forms the bottom of the box vwhen the blank== isi folded, the said neck having at each end and extending to the sides thereofA the tabs 5, 5, and 6, 6, adapted to be folded at right angles to the edges of the neck. rlhe blank is vfurther provided .with a cut away portion 7 with end reinforcing members 8, .8, at each side of the cut away portion, said end reinforcing members being inte ral with the blank on the dotted lines 9, the otted lines 10 indicating a line of fold for the reinforcing members 8.
One end of the blankk has wings 1l, one on each side thereof which are adapted to be *foldedl to form the ends of the box whereas that portion of the blank betweenthcdotted lines l2, 12, and 13, 13, formthe sides of the box. The wings 11 are adapted to be folded on the line 14, so that that portion between the line 14 and the outer edge of each wing is insertible under the edges of the tabs 5, 5, and 6, 6, and on the surface of the bottom formed by the neck 4, rlhe dotted line 15 denotes the line of fold of the wings to form the ends of the box, the said wings being bent 'downwardly on the said' fold 15 and the portion between tiie dotted line 14- and the outer edge being extended between the tabs, as stated, and the upper surface of the box. By reason of the fact that the reinforcing end portions 8 are folded on the lines 9 and 10 a shelf-like top 16 is formed between the fold line 15 and the fold line 9, it being observed from an inspection of Fig. 1 that the top of the box is somewhat. in the nat-ure of a ilange extending on all sides of the box and vadding to the strength and durability thereof. It will be further observed fro'm an inspection of Fig. 1 that the reinforcing end portions extend parallel with the top 16 of the box as well as parallel with each end of the box and that the height of the reinforcing portion between the folds 9 and 10 vis equal to the distance between the top of the box and the inserted portion of the blank or that portion between the fold line 14 and the outer edge of the wing 11, it being found in practice that it is necessary to press the vertically disposed portions of the end reinforcing strip lnto place so that they are-retained therein by frictional contact.
The cover 17 is formed integral with the neck and one side of the box is produced by folding the blank on the lines 12, 12, and the cover is ycoextens'ive in area with the top of the box. Brackets 18' are formed ativel be folded on the line 19 so that they stand at right angles to the cover 17. The brackets 18 have integral props or retaining devices 20 foldable o-n the line 21 in order that the extension 22 thereof may be inserted between the end of the box and the bottom thereof. By this arrangement, the cover may be held in the position shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose of displaying the contents of the box or the advertising on the cover thereof and when it is desired to apply the cover to the box or close the same,
the brackets may be' bent inwardly, after removing the extensions of thev props from the space between the end walls and the bottom of the box andthe pro will 'fold and nest between the box and tie cover.
By reason of the construction just indicated, an inexpensive, durable and comparstrong paper box is produced, the saine eing provided with means for holding the cover in open position and being capable of folding when the cover is closed. It has been found in practice that the folding of the brackets or the props thereof does not aifect the efficiency of t-he same and that upon opening the cover, the props may be readjusted to the position shown in Fig. l and the cover open position.
The extension 24 which is formed with will be effectively retained in y Levasseto produce the box, and being provided with paste or.4 other adhesive, is secured to the internal surface of the side wall of the `box'which is formed between the fold lines 12, 12. 'It will be observed, therefore, that a sin 1e blank is used to produce the box and t ere is but one joint produced by securing parts together by adhesive, the said joint having just been described.
In a box, a blank having a centra-1 portion forming the bottom of the box, wings at the sides of one end of the blank adapted to be folded to form theends of the box with extensions adapted to overlie a portion of the bottom of the box, sides integral with the central portion forming .the bottom and adapted to be formed by bending the blank, a cover for the box, brackets integral with the cover and adapted to be bent at angles thereto, extensions on the bracket, each terminating in a portion extending at right angles to the said extensions, said angular portions being inserted between the extensions of the end of the box which partially j overlie the bottom thereof and said bottom whereby the cover is held in elevated position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
