To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Slitting and Winding Sheet Metal; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for slitting and winding sheet metal, the object of the invention being to provide a compact machine which shall be so constructed that the slack in the sheet metal after it emerges from the rolls of the mill, shall be taken up in a manner to maintain said sheet of metal sufficiently taut to insure the accuracy of the slitting operation.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a machine embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section; and Fig. 3 is an end view of a portion of the machine.
1 represents the rolls of a rolling mill for thin sheet metal and 2, a portion of the frame of such mill. The beams 3-4 of a horizontal frame 5 are connected at one end to the frame 2, and at their other ends, the beams 34 of the horizontal frame are supported by suitable upright framework 6. The frame 5 is also provided with a bracket 7 projecting laterally from the beam 3 of said frame 5. The frame 5 and its bracket 7 serve to support the winding mechanism, as hereinafter explained, and between said winding mechanism and the rolls 1, the slitting mechanism is located and supported by the said horizontal frame 5. In constructing the slitting mechanism, 1 provide standards 8 which receive bearing. boxes 910 for superimposed shafts 11-12. The lower bearing boxes 9 for the shaft 11 may be fixed and to this shaft the lower slitter wheels are secured. The upper shaft 12 carries the slitting cutter wheels 14: and the bearing box 10 for this shaft is mounted so as to be vertically movable. The out ters 14: are held yielding to their work by means of springs 15 bearing upon the journal boxes 10, and suitable means, as indicated at 16 may be provided for adjusting the tension of these springs. The wheels of the slitting mechanism are so located that the meeting points of the upper and lower wheels will be in a plane somewhat above the meeting points of the rolls 1, from which the sheet of metal emerges. The metal sheet is guided from the rolls 1 to the slitting wheels by means of an inclined guide 17 and the strips or sheets of metal pass from the slitting mechanism to the winding mechanism, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In constructing the winding mechanism, I provide an expansible mandrel 18, located on a shaft 19, one end of said shaft being extended beyond the end of the mandrel and mounted in suitable bearings on the beam 3 and brackets 7 of frame 5. The opposite end of the mandrel shaft has a bearing in a journal box 19*. This journal box 1 is hinged at one end to one side of an opening of frame 5 (in line with the beams t of the latter) and the other end ofthis hinged journal box is maintained in normal position by means of a spring-pressed latch 20. By swinging the hinged bearing box 19 away from the journal of the mandrel shaft, removal of a roll of sheet metal from the mandrel will be facilitated. For the purpose of manipulating the expansible mandrel, an adjusting lever 21 may be provided.
.A countershaft 22 extends across the bracket 7, suitable bearings 23 being provided on the beam 3 and bracket 7 for the accommodation of this shaft. Two disks 2425 (having suitable hub portions), are located on the shaft 22 and receive between them, the web portion of a pulley 26 loose on said shaft. The disks 24-25 are rotatable with the shaft,the disk 2a being fixed to the shaft and the disk 25 being splined thereto so as to be movable laterally with relation to the pulley 26. A spring 27 bears against the disk 25 and supplies power whereby the disks 24-25 will operate to clamp the pulley and constitute a friction connection between said pulley and the shaft. A sleeve or plunger 28 on the shaft 22, constitutes an abutment for the spring and a pivoted lever 29 is connected with said sleeve or plunger for adjusting the tension of the spring 27 and amount of frictional resistance between the disks 2425 and the pulley 26. In order that the lever may be locked in different positions for maintaining the spring 27 at any desired tension, a segment 30 is provided and adapted to be engaged by a suitable detent on the lever.
A gear 31 is secured to the shaft 22 and imparts motion to a smaller gear 32 on the winder shaft 19, said gearing being so proportioned as to be capable of driving the winding mandrel at a speed somewhat greater than that of the rolls 1.
In order to protect the spring 27, the same is inclosed within a casing 33, in which the plunger 28 telescopes.
In operating the mechanism, mot-ion is imparted to the pulley 26 from any convenient source of power and is transmitted through the friction clamp devices to the shaft 22 and from the latter, through the gearing 3132 to the shaft of the Winding mandrel. By means of the friction devices, the speed of winding mandrel can be so controlled that the sheet metal drawn from the rolls and past the slitting mechanism will be maintained taut, all surplus slack (which has heretofore caused much trouble in slitting and winding very thin sheet metal) being taken up.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope as defined in the appended claims, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination framework and rolls adjacent to one end thereof, of a winding mandrel mounted on said frame, a gear rotatable with said mandrel, a counter-shaft,
a gear on said counter-shaft and meshing with the mandrel gear, a pulley loose on the counter-shaft, adjustable friction devices connecting said pulley with the countershaft, slitters mounted on the frame-work intermediate of the rolls and the winding mandrel, and an inclined guide extending from said rolls to the slitters.
