To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Peelers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to peelers and its object is to produce a simple, less expensive and more eflicient peeler than those now in use.
My invention consists in a horizontally disposed cylinder, the inner surfaces of said cylinder being burred or provided with a grater, a stationary separator in said cylinder, a water supply in said cylinder, means for driving the cylinder, means whereby the contents of said cylinder may be easily removed therefrom, and means whereby the water is prevented from escaping around the free edges of said cylinder.
My invention also consists in the parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawing which serves to illustrate the construction of my invention: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, part of which is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 1 is a detailed view of the separator employed in my invention. 'Fig. 5 is a detailed section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the grating which covers the drain of the peeler.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated, 1 indicates a cylindrical casing which is adapted to be rotated by means of a belt 2 driven by a motor 3 or any other suitable power. The motor 3 is mounted upon a horizontal cross rail 4:, which is supported on the end housings or frames 5 and 6, which are provided with legs 7 adapted to support the device. The cylinder 1 is provided on its interior with a grater 8 the inner surface of which is burred. An end plate 9 is mounted thereon, and is provided with a journal 10. The end plate 9 forms a completely closed end for the cylinder 1, and by means of the journal 10 forms a main support for the cylinder. The housing 5 is provided with a bearing 11, in which the journal 10 of the end plate 9 is adapted to rot-ate. A grease cup 12 may be provided in Specification of Letters Patent.

the bearing if desired. The end housing or support 6 is of different construction than that of housing 5, it being open to allow the insertion of the cylinder 1. The support or housing 6, therefor, is in the form of a ring which is provided at the bottom thereof with the legs 7. An end plate or cover 13 is bolted to said support 6 and is provided with a packing ring 1 1 therebetween. The end cover 13 is lso provided with a suitable hopper 16 having an opening 15 for the admission of the material to be peeled. A pivoted swinging door 17 is fastened to a short shaft 19, which is journaled in the bearing 18, provided on the end cover or housing 13. A handle 20 is fastened to said shaft 19 and forms means for operating the swinging door 17 which is adapted to close the outlet 21 of the peeler. The outlet 21 is provided with a housing or shed 22 extending outwardly therefrom, and to which is fastened at 2 1 a chute 23 which is provided with an outlet or drain 25, part of the floor 26 of the chute converging thereto.
A drain grate 27 is provided in the chute 23 directly over the outlet 25 and rests upon converging surfaces of the floor 26. The entire chute 23 is fastened below the outlet 21 of the peeler. The grate 27 also is placed directly beneath the outlet in order that all the material passing from the peeler or cylinder 1 will fall thereon whereupon the larger particles will roll from said grate out of the mouth 23 of the chute 23. The peel and refuse, however, will be carried through the grate to the drain 25 by means of water which is constantly flowing inside of the cylinder 1. A plate 28 is mounted on the inside surface of the end cover 13, thereby being held stationary relative to the cylinder, and is so mounted that its edges will fall very close to the inner surface of the rotating cylinder 1, thereby constituting a separator, and preventing the material to be peeled from continually rotating with the cylinder. As the material is carried into engagement with the separator it is immediately deflected in its upward course inwardly, and thrown back to the bottom of the cylinder, there to be repeatedly returned to the separator. This repeated contact of the material with the burred surfaces of the cylinder and separator so tumbles and changes the position of the material in all direct-ions that the entire surfaces of the same are uniformly peeled. This plate is also provided with a rough grating surface. A. water pipe 29 near the top of the station ary plate 28 has suitable holes 30 therein to allow water to flow freely int-o the revolving cylinder 1, thereby tho-roughly and constantly washing the contents thereof and carrying away all refuse therefrom.
The cylinder being constantly supplied with water through the pipe and being rotated at a fairly high speed, the contents tend to escape from the cylinder 1 out of its open end due to the centrifugal force thereof. To guide the water to the proper chute and outlet, I provide a curved flange 31 on the edge of said cylinder 1, the flange 31 extending outwardly and being annular, and extending entirely around the cylinder. A gutter 32 on the frame or annular support 6 extends therefrom underneath the curved flange 31 mounted on the rotating cylinder, so that when any of the water and refuse escapes due to centrifugal force, it is dashed against the outer cover or housing 13, and is thrown outwardly, the flange ring 31 directing that which does not run down the cover plate 13 to the outlet into the gutter 32, and the gutter 32 thereby preventing the water and refuse from escaping, except at the proper outlet chute. This arrangement is more clearly shown in detail in Fig. 5 where it is seen that the annular trough or gutter 32 is fastened to the frame 6 and that the annular flange 31 is curved around the outermost part of the gutter 32 and is mounted upon the rotating cylinder 1.
To form a support for the end of the to tating cylinder 1 opposite from the end which is journaled, I provide two rollers 33, which are mounted in the support or frame 6, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The rollers 33 are mounted on bosses 34 provided on the inner surfaces of the supporting ring or frame 6, by means of studs or bolts 35. The surfaces of the rollers bear against a band ring or track 36 mounted on the end of the cylinder 1. The rings or bands 36 are provided with an annular shoulder 37, which forms a guide for the roller 33. The weight of the rotating cylinder 1 is supported by means of said rollers at the free open end of said cylinder.
The operation of the device is as follows The motor 3 is started, thereby immediately starting the cylinder 1 through the agency of the belt 2. The water in the water pipe 29 is turned on and the fruits or vegetables are placed in the hopper l6 and immediately enter the cylinder 1, the handle 20 of course being in the proper position to cause the outlet 21 to be closed by means of the door 17. Vegetables or fruits having skins to be removed will be thrown outwardly by the centrifugal force against the concave grater or inner burred surfaces of the cylinder 1, and carried to the sepa- I rator 28 where they are deflected in their course and thrown to the bottom of the cylinder, and they will return repeatedly, with the resultthat after the operation of the machine for a short time, the skins of the vegetables will be entirely removed by the continual engagement with the burred surfaces of the graters 8 and separator 28. When the machine has been operated for a suflicient length of time to have peeled the vegetables placed therein, the handle 20 is operated so that the door 17 passes away from the opening or outlet 21.
In order that the vegetables may run out freely, I provide rails 7 on the bottom of the legs 7 which are pivoted in the shoe 38, and which are provided with extensions 39 upon which the foot of the operator may rest, and which will tip or tilt the entire peeler, giving it a sloping angle so that the vegetables will readily run out of the open ing or outlet 21 into the chute 23. The vegetables then strike on the grating 27 and run out of the mouth portion 23 of the chute. The peels and refuse, however, will be carried through the grating 27 by the washwater and out of the drain 25 of the chute 23.
Modifications of invention may be made without departing from its spirit and scope, and I do not wish to be confined to the exact details shown.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a peeler, a rotatable cylindrical casing, having a central hearing at the closed end of said casing, and a peripheral hearing at the open end and burred surfaces on the inside of said casing, a supporting frame at each end of said casing, and a cover plate at one end of said casing provided with an inlet and an outlet, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical rotating casing having a solid wall, a supporting frame for said casing, a means for rotating said casing, said casing being closed at one end and open at the other end, and a stationary cover for said open end, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, means for rotating same, said casing being closed at one end and open at the other, a stationary end cover for said 120 open end, and a stationary separator mounted inside of said cylindrical casing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing adapted to be rotated and 125 closed at one end, and journaled at the closed end thereof, end support frames, an end cover at the open end of said casing fastened to said supporting frame, an inlet and outlet in said end cover and a separator I30 mounted on said end cover and projecting inside said cylindrical casing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing adapted to rotate, one end of said casing being closed and the other end open, a flange provided on the open end of said cylindrical casing, said flange being curved outwardly and back- Wardly, supporting frames for said cylindrical casing, a flange mounted on one of said supporting frames adjacent the annular flange of the cylindrical casing, said flange on said supporting frame being bent to form a gutter at its free end, said bent portion extending under the curved portion of the annular flange mounted on the cylindrical casing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In a peeler, having a cylindrical casing with one end open and one end closed, a stationary front at its open end containing an inlet and outlet, a pivotally mounted door adapted to partly close said outlet to permit the continuous discharge of Water and peel and to permit the discharge of the peel, fruit and vegetables by moving said door upon its pivot, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
7. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, having a closed end and an open end, a stationary cover for said open end, and a separator mounted on said stationary cover and extending inside of said cylindrical casing, substantially as set forth.
8. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed ro tatable cylindrical casing, having one end open and the other end closed, a burred surface in said casing, a stationary cover for said open end, means for rotating said casing, and a stationary separator mounted on said stationary cover and projecting into said cylindrical casing and having its edges arranged near the inner surfaces of the rotating cylinder, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
9. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, having one end open and the other end closed and having a burred surface in said casing, a stationary cover for said open end, means for rotating said casing, and a stationary burred separator mounted on said stationary cover and projecting into said rotating cylindrical casing, near the surface of said cylinder, substantially as set forth.
10. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, having one end open and the other end closed and having a burred surface in said casing, a stationary cover for said open end, means for rotating said casing, and a stationary separator mounted on said stationary cover projecting into and arranged parallel with and near the inner surface of said cylindrical casing, substantially as set forth.
11. In a peeler, a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, a supporting frame for said casing, means for rotating said casing, Said casing being closed at one end and open at the other end, a stationary cover for said open end, said stationary cover having an inlet and an outlet, and a pivotally mounted swinging door adapted to close said outlet and adapted to close the inlet when the outlet is open, substantially as set forth.
