. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULES SMOUT, OF GUATEMALA, GUATEMALA, CENTRAL AMERICA.
MACHINE FOR HULLING AND POLISHING COFFEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,788, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed September 14, 1885.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULEs SMoUT, a citizen of the Republic of Guatemala, residing in the city and Republic of Guatemala, Central America, engineer, have invented a new and useful Machine for Hulling and Polishing Coffee, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 10,086, bearing date July l2, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to the construction of a machine for hulling and polishing coffee; and it consists of a cylindrical casing mounted either horizontally or vertically on suitable framing, in which a revolving cylinder is placed concentrically. On the inside surface of the casing and the outside surface of the cylinder is formed a series of spiral ribs having an increasing pitch. The discharge ends of the cylinder and casing are made preferably larger in diameter than the feed ends. The said casing is also provided with a feed` and discharge opening. The feed-opening is fitted with a hopper and regulating-door, adjusted by means of a screw and hand-wheel, and the discharge-outlet is fitted with a hinged door having affixed to it a lever and movable weight for adjusting pressure on the coffee while being` hulled and polished. The device is provided with an exhaust-fan' for the removal of the dust and chaff.
The accompanying drawings represent a machine constructed horizontally according` to this invention.
Figure l is a side elevation in part section. Fig. 2-is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line a: fr, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
ais a revolving cylinder, on the external surface of which is formed a series of spiral ribs having an increasing pitch.
b is a cylindrical casing having a series of spiral ribs, C, formed on its internal surface, and arranged similarly to those on the surface of the cylinder.
d is a hopper, and Za regulatingdoor actuated by hand-Wheel f.
gis a hinged outlet-door, having attached to it a lever and movable Weight, h.
i is the discharging-spout; j, the exhaustfan; k, the suction-pipe to the fan; m, the hopper on pipe k,- p, the pulley, acting also as a Serial No. 177,012. (No model.) Patented in England July 12, 1884, No. 10,086.
iiy-wheel, over which the belt from the source of power driving the machine passes. g is a pulley keyed on the same axle, carrying a belt (indicated by dotted lines) and driving the pulley r, which gives motion to the pulley s, from which a belt (shown by dotted lilies) transmits the motion to the pulley t, keyed on the axle of the fan j.
The form of the ribs is seen in section in Figs. 3 and 4. V
The action of the machine is as follows: The hopper d being supplied with coffee to be cleaned, rotary motion is imparted to the cylinder ci, theresult of which is, that the hulls of the coffee are removed and the beans are polished, owing to the action of the spiral ribs between which the coffee is treated, the coffee-beans and husks passing out through the outlet-door g under pressure, which is regulated by the position of weight h on the doorlever, and are discharged by the outletspout t' into the hopper m, and, passing into the'pipe k, the husks are removed by the fan j and discharged at n, while the cleaned'coffee is delivered at outlet o, provided with a sliding door.
I am aware that prior to my invention ma chiues for hulling and polishing coffee have been made, but differing in their construction and manner of action from my said invention. l therefore do not claim, broadly, every form of machine for accomplishing this purpose; but
What l do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for hulling and polishing coffee, embodyingin its construction an external casing having internal spiral fluted surfaces of increasing pitch affixed thereto, and an internal revolving cylinder having ribs or flutes of increasing pitch, substantially as shown and described.
2. A machine for hulling and polishing coffee, embodying in its construction an external casing having internal spiral iluted surfaces of increasing pitch, an internal revolving cylinder having ribs or utes of increasing pitch, a hinged outlet-door, a regulated hopper, and a refuse exhaust-fan, substantially as shown and described.
