UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFTQ.
JAKOIB SAUTER, OF NEUHAUSEN, SWITZERLAND.
HAT ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAKoB SAUTER, a citizen of Switzerland, and resident of Neuhausen-on-the-Rhine, Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, have invented a Hat Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat-attachments and concerns more particularly a holder for womens hats.
In the drawings :Figure 1 shows a side View of the holder; Fig. 2 shows a plan thereof, partly in section, and Fig. 3 shows an end view seen from the right in Fig. 2, this view also being shown partly in section for the sake of clearness.
In carrying out my invention I make provision of a comb 1 of metal having two teeth 2 and 3, the said teeth being provided with longitudinally disposed slots 4 and 5 respectively. The part which joins the teeth is designated by 6 and fashioned into a sleeve which is closed at one end and adapted to receive a small piston or plunger 7. This plunger is recessed and has attached to its head one end of a rod, the other end of the latter being formed into a knob 8 which partly projects from the sleeve 6 in such a manner that it allows of a depression or a sliding movement of the said plunger within the sleeve. The plunger and consequently the rod with its knob are normally held in the position shown in Fig. 2, that is, in a position with the larger part of the knob abutting against the inner face of the corresponding end of the sleeve, by means of a spring 9, the latter moreover causing the inner edge of the plunger to engage a projection 10 integral with a laterally disposed angle iron or plate 11 and extending through a suitable opening in the sleeve 6. The plate 11 serves as a means for attachment, at 15, of the whole device to a hat (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) and has downwardly projecting members 13 and 14c Specification of Letters Patent.

which are bearing in and guided by the slots 4 and 5 of the teeth 2 and 3. In this man ner and if it is desired to fix a hat, the wearer, after depressing the knob 8 and withdrawing the comb from the plate 11 far enough to allow of the placing of the hat on the head, pushes the comb back into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 thereby inserting the teeth 2 and 3 into the hair. The knob 8 is then released thus causing the inner edge of the plunger to engage the projection 10 of the plate 11 and locking the latter to the comb.
In order to detach the hat it is merely necessary to depress the knob 8 again and to bring the plunger out of engagement with the projection 10 when the comb may be at once withdrawn.
Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A hat-attachment, comprising in combination a comb having two teeth each of which has a longitudinally disposed slot, the part joining the two teeth being fashioned into a sleeve which is closed at one end and open at the other and having an aperture at one side, an angle plate having downwardly projecting members and a projection, said members being guided in the aforesaid slots and the projection eXtending through the said aperture, a spring influenced plunger within the sleeve and adapted to engage with the projection on the angle plate, and means to move the plunger against the pressure of the spring and to disengage it from the projection, all substantially as described. and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J AKOB SAUTER.
