SUITCASE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1913.
Application filed March 7, 1913. Serial No. 752,746.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER B. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Suitcase-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices above mentioned, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a lock of this class that shall be simple in its construction and one in which the attractiveness of the finished lock shall be improved.
A form of lock embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the object herein above set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of the face plate of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in section through the face plate on plane denoted by dotted line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 5 denotes the face plate of a lock that is stamped to form from sheet metal having a raised surface 6 on its face providing a depression or lock recess 7 at the back, this raised surface having an opening 8 for the hasp and a key-hole 9 for the key, holes 10 also being provided by means of which the face plate is secured in place. In stamping this face plate to shape a flange 11 is formed around its edge, and in forming the recess 7 I locate it at such distance from the side edges as to provide shoulders 12 between the ends of the recess 7 and the flange 11. A look case 13 having lock mechanism of any desired construction is formed to fit within the recess 7 and in carrying out my invention I provide lugs 14 extending from each end of the lock case onto the shoulders 12 provided for their reception, and the flange 11 opposite the lugs 14 is provided with tongues 15 which are bent over onto the lugs 14 to hold the lock case securely in place in the recess, and this means for fastening the lock avoids any appearance of fastenings on the face of the lock.
Prior to my invention it has been customsaid lugs to hold ary to extend lugs laterally from the lock onto the inner surface of the face plate, to pass rivets through said lugs from the front of the face plate, and to head the rivets over on the inside of the face plate to hold the lock securely in place. In such a construction the heads of the rivets appear upon the front of the face plate, and it is to avoid this objectionable feature and to improve the appearance of the face plate that I have devised the invention described herein.
While I have shown herein a satisfactory means for accomplishing my purpose, I do not intend that a lock must be secured exactly as shown herein to come within the spirit and intent of the invention, as it is not absolutely essential that the lock case shall be located in a recess in the face plate, and it will be found that such case may be secured, in accordance with my invention, to a face plate having no recess, the improved means described herein for securing the case being however employed.
I claim:
1. A face plate having a recess for a lock case, a flange extending therearound, a lock case located in said recess and having lugs projecting beyond the sides thereof, and tongues extending from said flange and bent over said lugs to hold the lock case in place.
2. A face plate having a flange extending therearound and a recess located therein at such distance from the flange as to provide shoulders between said recess and flange, a lock case located in said recess and having lugs resting upon said shoulders, and tongues extending from said flange and bent over on to said lugs to hold the lock case in place.
3. A face plate having a recess for a lock case, a flange extending therearound and located at a distance from said recess to provide shoulders at opposite ends thereof, a lock case located in said recess and having lugs of a length to rest upon said shoulders and against said flange, and tongues extending from said flange and bent over on to the lock case in place.
1. A face plate having a flange extending therearound and integral therewith, a lock case located within said flange and having lugs projecting therefrom, and tongues eX- bent over said lugs to hold the lock case in v tending from said flange and bent over said place, and means fon holding the lock case 10 lugs to hold the lock case in place. against lateral movement.
5. A face plate having a flange- Qxtending 5 therearound and integral therewith, a look ELMER STONE case located Within said flange and held from l/Vitnesses: lengthwise movement therein and having ALICE B. MUNsoN, lugs, tongues extending from said flange and J. H. MILLS.
