To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT F. CLIFTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Airy, in the county of Surry and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVagon- Hounds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wagon hounds, and has for its object, the provision of a simple, economical and light yet strong construction, adapted for use in two horse or one-horse wagons.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2-2 and 33 rcspeo tively of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the front hounds are composed of an angle bar bent to form, and consists of a pair of side bars 1, converging slightly toward the front, and connected by a rear cross bar 2. The front end of each bar 1 is bent inwardly at a sharper angle than the angle of the bar, as indicated at 3 and the extremity of each bar is then bent forwardly, as indicated at 1.
The angle bar from which both hounds are formed is arranged with one side 36 horizontal, and with the other side vertical. The said side is not plane, but is curved transversely, the concave face being outward. At the juncture of the portions 1 and 2, the bar is curved or rounded, so that the portions merge gradually into each other.
That portion of the bar forming the por tion 4: has its vertical side straight or plane, and a plate 5 is arranged on the upper faces of the horizontal sides, and is secured to the hounds by rivets 6. The two portions 4 and the plate 5 thus form a channel for receiving the tongue 7, and a bolt 8 is passed through the tongue and the vertical sides of the portions 41, to pivotally connect the tongue to the hounds.
A rectangular frame 9 encircles the ends of the portion 4 and the end of plate 5, and the tongue, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. The frame is riveted to the plate and hounds, by rivets 10, and the bolt 8 is engaged by a nut 11. The front axle 12 is arranged below the hounds, and the bolster 13 is arranged above the hounds.

The reach bar 1 1 is arranged between the axle and the bolster, and is secured to both, pivotally, by means of the bolt 15. Each of the portions 1 of the hounds has secured to the upper face thereof, an arc-shaped wear or guide rod 16, the ends 17 of the rod being o'll'set downwardly and held to the portion by bolts 18. The body of the rod is thus spaced above the bounds, and the adjacent end of the bolster moves between the rod 16 and the hounds. The front wheels 19 are journaled on the ends of the axle, and the hounds are secured to the axle in any desired manner.
The rear axle 20 is provided with the wheels 21, and the rear bolster 22 rests on the rear ends of the rear hounds. The said hounds are composed of two members each of which is formed from an angle bar, the rear ends of the bars being secured to the rear axle by bolts 26, while the forward ends converge toward the reach bar.
The members 25 are arranged with one portion of the material horizontal and the other vertical, and the horizontal portion is upward. A plate 27 is secured to the said portions of the members 25 by means of rivets 29. The vertical portion of each of the said members 25 is bent around a vertical pin or bolt 32 at the front end of the said member, and a strap or plate 28 connects the bolts at their lower ends. The plate 28 and the plate 27 are on opposite faces of the reach bar, and the vertical portions of the members 25 bent around the bolts 32 as before mentioned, bear against the side edges of the reach bar. A bolt 30 is passed vertically through the plates 27 and 2S and through an opening of the reach bar, and the said bolt is engaged by a nut 31 below the plate 28.
The reach bar is provided with a longitudinal series of openings 35, for the bolt 30, to permit the axles to be moved toward or from each other. The tongue (Fig. 2) is permitted some movement, as indicated by dotted lines. The free end of the tongue may be lifted, but the plate 5 prevents the said free end from downward movement.
