Description

R. HELMER.
ETLING DEVICE.
APPLICATION PILED PBB.14,1912y ATTORNEY ROBERT HELMER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
FILING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23,1913.
Application led February 14, 1912. Serial No. 677,437.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Hamann, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York cit-y, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices, of which the following isa clear, full, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved filing device for filing dra-wings and papers in racks, so that the papers or drawings will hang vertically.
`ln carrying out the invention, I provide a set of tracks, between two of which there may be slid asset of drawings bound together' at one end in a metal tube of curved or ,elliptical general cross section. l preferably provide a cabinet, to the under side of the top of which I locate a number of tracks parallel one with the other, each track formed of metal of an inverted U cross section, the arms of the U slanting slightly away from the center. These U shaped cross section drawings l mount a short distance from the top of the cabinet on suitable distancing sleeves by means of screws passing through the tracks, and through the sleeves. The drawings I secure to thel inside of an elliptical tube open at its bottom edge. and provided with a depending flat flange, through which suitable slots are provided, so that a fastener of the usual variety may pass through the slots and through the drawings, thus securing the same with their upper ends within the elliptical sleeve. The thickness at the center or short diameter of this sleeve is such that it will ride nicely between two adjacent tracks, so that the entire set of drawings in a given tub'e'may be readily slid into place and taken out.
The scope of my invention will be pointed outl in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cabinet provided with my improved invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing two tracks and the upper pa rt of a map holder drawn to an enlarged scale from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 with art broken away. Fig. t is a bottom plan o Fig. 3.
by to provide As shown in the drawing, l is the cabinet to the top of which on the under side thereof I fasten a series of parallel tracks 3 at a distance from the top thereof. These tracks 3 are of the cross section shown in Fig. 2, being an inverted U with the sides slanting away from the center, except at the front end, where the sides are pressed together so as to be parallel, and to present a 'wider opening at the front than throughout the length. These inverted U tracks 3 are secured to the. top of the cabinet 2. by means of screws 4 passing through the center of the tracks, and through distancing bushings 5 so that all the tracks, not only will be parallel, but will be an even distance from the under side of the top of the cabinet.
The maps or drawings 6 are collected in sets and punched at a distance from their binding edge to receive a fastener 7. The binding tube 8, preferably of metal, and clliptical in shape with its lower end open, and having an extending flat leaf 9, is also provided with punched holes 10 at suitable distances. The drawings are inserted as shown in Fig. 2 into the elliptical tube, and the fastener 7 passed through the slots or holes 10 in the leaf 9, through a vasher, and also through the drawings, and are bent over as shown clearly in Fig. 4. \Vhen the drawings are thus assembled they may be readily moved in and out along the tracks formed by the inverted U shaped rails.I
'lhc ends of the elliptical tubes S may be provided as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 with knobs 11, which may be made to fit the tube and projections 1Q at the end thereof bent over to grasp the same.
l claim as my invention:
l. As an article of manufacture a supporting track for a filing device comprising a strip of sheet metal turned down at its longitudinal edges to provide a pair of depending flanges to the strip, said flanges bcing diverged toward their free edges whereoppositely inclined supporting faces at either side of the strip, said flanges converging at the forward end of the strip whereby to provide inclined aiding faces merging into said supporting aces.
Q. .In a filing device, the combination with spaces between the tracks for'the reception a support, and a plurality of sheet binding of said tubes. 10 tubes, of a plurality of sheet metal tracks of Signed at New York city, New York, this substantially inverted V- shape, and means 13th day of February, 1912. depending a short distance from the under- ROBERT HELMER.
side of the support to whichsaid tracks are Witnesses: secured for holding said tracks in parallel F. WARREN WRIGHT, and spaced relation whereby to provide FRED FRANCIS WEISS.
