GEORGE STEiNGRUBER, OF HAZLEI-IURST, MISSISSIPPI.
HINGE.
To all whom 2'1 may concern:
Be it known that I, (Fluonon S'rmxoanonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at HaZlelun-st, in the county of Copiah and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the :t'ollmving is a specification.
The object ot the present invention is to provide a novel form of hinge adapted particularly to join together two men'ibers such as the sections of a foldable table teat so as to permit folding of said sections or the moven'ient of one section through a plane of one hundred and eighty degrees with rc spect to the other section.
In carrying out the invention it contemplated to provide a hinge consisting of two attaching members each of which has formed therein a socket to receive one end of a connecting link, said socket terminating in shoulders adapted to limit the opening and closing movements of the hinge or of the link connecting the hinge members aforesaid.
One of the principal features of my invention is the provision of a hinge of the above nature which is susceptible of being set into the adjoining edges of a ttoldable member instead of connecting said members at their outer edge portions, whereby said fold-able member in their connected condition may be passed through the machinery for planing its top surface as well as the edge portions in which the hinge members are set.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the cmistruction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view partially in section and showing the application of a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion being broken away to show more clearly the tll'lflllQ'OHltEllt of the connecting link for the hinge members. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the contiguous edge portions of the foldable member to which my hinge is attached, said hinge being in closed position. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the hinge in open position. Fig. 5L is a longitudinal sectional view taken about on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, (S and 7 are detail views of the side plate, interme Specification of Letters Patent.

diate plate and connecting link respectively used in the construction of my hinge.
'Jlhoughout the following detail 'lcscrip tion, and on the several figures oil? the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like retercncc characters.
Specifically describing my invention and retcnring to the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 represent the sections oi a 'l'oldable member to be connected by means of my hinge invention. These sections for the purpose of this description will be termed the sections oil. a table leaf, in the abutting edge portions of which one or more of these hinges may be inset. The hinge constituting my invention consists of a pair of attaching members 3 ol identical shape and construction, which members are connected together by means of a link Each of the members 25 comprises an internal socket in which the link -1l is adapted to work as will now be set forth.
As a matter of convenience in the manufacture ot my invention, each of the members 3 is termed of a pair of outer plates 5, shown most clearly in Fig. 5 of the draw .ings, which plates are bent at right angles at their upper portion to term a wing (5, the wings oi. the outer plates of each member 3 being bent in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 3. Between the outer plates 5 is disposed an inner or intermediate plate T as shown in Fig. (3 of the drawing, said plate being cut away at one of its lower corners as designated by the numeral 8, the cut-away portion being of semicirrailar shape.
The outer plates 5 and the inner plate 7 just mentioned are fastened together by means of rivets or other like members 9 passing through o mcnings J in said plates and the link i is then pivotally mounted upon a pin t. so as to pivotally connect said link with the hinge member 3, it being understood that the link is conncctcd at each end in the manncr above described to join together the two attaching members 3 ol my hinge cimstruction. The cut away portion 8 in the intermediate plate '7 of each hinge member forms a socket in which the link i moves and this socket or cut away portion terminates in an upper shoulder a. and a lower shoulder I) which shoulders limit the upward and downward movement of the link 4-. The outer plates 5 at the corners adjacentthe socket 8 are cut away diagonally as indicated by the numeral 10 so as to permit the movement of one hinge member 3 with respect to the other as the hinge is moved from an open to a closed position. Each of the wings 6 of the hinge members 3 is provided with an opening 6 so that the hinges may be secured in position by means of screws 6". g
It will be understood that the leaf members or sections 1 and 2 in applying my hinge are first provided with the necessary openings or holes in which the body portion of each hinge member 3 is adapted to be seated, the wings 6 preferably lying in a lower plane than the top of the sections 1 and 2 which may then be run through a planing machine and smoothed in the usual manner. The foldable leaf may then be passed through a machine for properly jointing the abutting edges of the leaves and all this may he done after the hinge has been applied in position as above described thus assuring the proper adjustment of the leaf sections 1 and 2 with respect to each other. Any number of these hinges may be inserted on the abutting edge portions of the leaf sections as will be obvious, the hinge construction making a very strong and durable connecting means for this purpose. The cooperation of the link 4 with the ter- Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v V
A hinge comprising a pair of attaching members each consisting of a pair of outer plates having opposing wing portions bent at angles to said plate and plate disposed intermediate the outer plates, said last mentioned plate being cut away so as to form an internal socket, the terminals of said cutaway portion forming abutment shoulders,
and a rectangular link connected to said members so as to pivotally move in said cut away portions, the terminal shoulders of said cut-away portion limiting movements of the link in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I {tffiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
