Description
S. RONDA.
THREAD AND TWINE CUTTING DEVICE.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 11 1913.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
WITNESSES "outrun STEVE RQNLDA,
OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
THREAD AND TWINE CUTTING DEVICE.
Application filed June 11, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S'rnvn Ronna, a sub ject of the Emperor of Austria-1 bmgary, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread and Twine Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accoi'npanying drawing.
This invention relates to a thread and twine cutting device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel clamping device for holding a thread or twine while the same is out.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device of the above type embodying corrugated clamping members that are locked together to hold a piece of thread or twine while the same is cut by a cutter carried by one of said members.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangen'lent of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cutting device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view of the device, and Fig. is a plan of the device with one of the clamping members thereof removed.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises two clamping members, one of which is in the form of an oblon stationary block 1. The bottom of the block is transversely grooved, as at 2 for transverse strips 3 that are suitably secured to the block 1 and have the ends thereof apertured, as at t whereby said strips can be secured to a suitable support to prevent the block 1 from becoming accidentally displaced while the dcvice is in use. The top of the block 1 inclined and diagonally corrugated, as at 5, while the forward end of said block is beveled, as at 6.
Hinged to the rear end of the block 1 by a conventional form of hinge 7 is a clamping member 8, said member having the bottom face thereof diagonally corrugated, as at 9, the corrugations of said member corresponding to the corrugations of the block 1, whereby a thread or twine can be clamped between the members.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Itatentcd Sept. 16, 1913.
sci-m1 No. 773,097.
Pivotally connected, as at 10 to one side of the block 1 is an operating lever 11 that has a long tiat arm 12 and a short curved arm 13, said curved arm extending under a strap 1 1 carried by the side of the member 8. The side of the block 1, adjacent to said lever is provided with a stop pin 15 that is engaged by said. lever to limit the opening movement of the member 8. Connected to the same side of the block 1 by suitable fastoning means 16 a spring 17. One end 18 of the spring extends under the lever 11 and the opposite end 19 of said spring extends under a kickoil" latch 20 pivotally connected, as at 21 to the forward end of the block 1. The same side of the block 1 is provided with a wear plate 22 having a keeper 23 to receive the long arm 12 ofihe lever 11. The spring 17 holds the clamping member 8 normally open and when the long arm 12 of the lever is depressed the spring 17 is placed under tension. The long arm 12 of the lever 11 can be placed under the keeper 23 and when in such position the kicko'll' latch 20 is depressed and the spring 17 is further under tension. It is with the member 8 closed upon a piece of thread or twine that the thread or twine is hold while it is moved into engagement with a notched cutter, carried by the side of the member 8. After the thread or twine has been cut the kickoff latch 20 can be depressed to force the long arm 12 from under the keeper 23, at which time the tension of the spring 17 is sniiicicnt to elevate thclong arm 12 and open the clamping member E1 relatively to the block 1, thereby permitting of the thread or twine being drawn or repositioned between the clamping members, whereby a desired quantity of thread or twine can be measured and cut.
The clamping members can be made of light and durable wood and their appurtenances of metal.
One en'lbodimcnl of the invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A thread and twine cutting device comprising a stationary clamping member and a hinged clamping member, raid members having corrugated confronting faces adapted to hold a thread or twine, a notched cutter carried by said hinged clamping member, a spring aressed lever carried by said stationary member for moving said hinged member, and means carried by said stationary member for holding saidlever with said hinged member in a closed position.
i 2. A thread and-twine cutting device comprising a stationary clamping amember and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, byed'dressing the .Commissioner oflatents, Washington, D. 0.
releasing said lever whereby said hinged member can assume an open position.
-lnztestimony whereof I aflix my signature 20 in the presence of two Witnesses.
STEVE HONDA.
