Description
HENRY Fern, or NEW YORK,
Letters Patent'NorlO'O, dated September 13, A187 0.
-....o--a'd- IMPROVEMENT IN- LocKrNG-BOLTSL The Schedule referred. to in these'Letters Patent and inaking part oi the sama To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known that I, HENRY linYH, of New York,
in the county of New Yorkand the State of New' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Bolt-Locks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseripton thereof, reference .being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. y
The nature ot' my invention consists in thev con'- strnetion and arrangement of a boltlock, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.`
' In order to enable others skilled in the art 'to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Fignre l is a view of the lock, and
Figure 2 is a view ofthe bolt and key. A represents the bolt-chamber, which is secured on the inside ot' the door, and provided at its outer end with a horizontal slot, a, from e'aeh end of which a vertical slot, b, extends downward, as shown in iig. 1. Opposite the key-hole in the door there is formed, in the chamber A, a cylinder, d, projecting inward, as shown.
B represents the b'olt, which is provided with a set ot' grooves, c c, and teeth i i, as shown in fig. 2, which give toit a rotating and endwise mot-ion when the key is applied.
C is a knob, with spindle D screwed into the bolt il, and moving in the slots a b on the chamber A.
The key G is, near .its end, provided with a set ot' vcironmferential grooves, which form rings or anges,
j'- f, and also with notches or grooves, o o, running lengthwise on the key, lfor a suitable distance, ilnmediately back-or' outside of the anges ff.
The bolt-lock being pnt together, the
will be raised up out of the vertical groove -b into the horizontal groove a on theuchamber A. The ringsor y key is in I sei-ted into the key-hplc and pressed as far forward as' it will go, which turns the boltsvo that the stem D flanges ff on the key, fitting into and operating in the grooves e e on the bolt, cause this rotating motion of the holt. Then, by turning the key either to the right or left, as the case may be, the grooves o o on' the key titover. teeth t' t on the bolt, so as to give Athe same the necessary endwise motion. In either case the' key is turned until there cornes a stop, caused by the stem D striking the end of the horizontal slot u.. The key is then pulled out, lwhen the knob C, falling down to bring the stem D in one of the vertical slots 1),.turns the bolt so as to carry the teeth,- 1 which give it the endwise motion, out ot' sight, and secures the lock frombeing picked, as .may be readily ascertainedby glancing into the key-chamber, there being but one ofthe grooves e in sight.
The'eonstructiou ot' the key-chamber is suchwith the chamber of the bolt that no instrument, excepting its p'roperkey, can be insertedA to change. the position of the bolt either way.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by' Letters Patent, is
1. The bolt B, provided with grooves eve and teeth t' t, to give the bolt a rotatingand endwise motion, substantially as and'for the purposes herein set forth, 2. In combination with the bolt B, having grooves c 'e and teeth i i,as. described, 'the Aknob G and stem,l
D, attached to the bolt, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth;
3. The combination of the bolt'B, with the grooves c e and teeth t' t, and theA key G, with its flanges f f, and grooves o o, substantially as and for the purposes herein set fort-h. y
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th day, of J une,
HENRY FEYH. [as] Witnesses:
HUGH HAWTHRN, v. J, Monti., Jr.
