To a whom it may concern Be it known that I, hlnuounnrri-i L. Sousa, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Tackless lVimlow-Shades, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to means for detachably securing to a roller pole, or other support, a curtain, window shade, awning, etc, or other llexible sheet of material.

Specifically the invention relates to immovements in a tackless window shade.

A further object is the production of a device that is simple and inexpensive, one that can be readily applied to any window shade with very little expense, and one that is not liable to get out of order. It is to be under stood, hox'vever that the constructions shown are only a few of a number of forms in which my invention may be embodied, within the scope of the appended claims.

The advantages of the invention are secnred by constructions and combinations which are pointed out in the appended claims.

These and such other objects as may here inafter appear are attained by my device, an embodiment of which is illustrated in the :wcompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents a fragmentary front elevation of a roller with its window shade, and an exemplilication of the invention; Fig. 2 shows a right hand side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a top plan view and partial section of Fig. 1 on the line 3, 3; Fig. *l is an enlarged section of Fig. 1 on the line 4, 4t; Fig. 5 represents an enlarged section of Fig. 1 on the line 5, 5; Fig. (3 shows a fragmentary front elevation of a modilication of the invention; Fig. 7 represents an enlarged section of Fig. (3 on the line 7, 7 Fig. 8 shows a cross-section of a modified roller for the invention; Fig. 9 represents 2 side elevation of a retaining strip; Fig. 10 represents a further modification of the invention and Fig. 11 shows a section of Fig. 10 on the line 11, 11.

Referring to the drawings a windowshade roller 20 has fitted therewith the usual coil spring not shown. Fer-rules or metallie caps 21, 22 with their usual appurtenances are fastened to the roller 20. The ferrules are slightly bulged at 23 to permit Specification of Letters Patent.

the entrance therein of the detachable retaining strip 96, which latter is preferably cylindrical in cross-section and of metal. The window shade 30 has formed therein at its upper or inner end a plurality of slots 3i, and is folded over as shown at 39, with the folded over portion bearing against the roller 20. The cylii'ulrical retaining strip 26 is coucavo-convcx and formed with a curve slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the roller 20. It is inserted through the slots 31 of the shade 30. The end portions of the retaining strip 26 bear on the outer surface of the side portions of the shade 30 to securely clamp the latter against the outer surface of the roller. This disposition of the retaining strip prevents the shade from being torn when used. The bulged portions 2;) of the ferrules in conjunction with the outer cylindrical surface of the roller form cavities for the (-nds of the said retaining strip. \Vilh this disposition of the retaining strip it is interlaced with the shade 330, so that alternate portions thereof are on opposite sides of the front portion of said shade as shown at 33 and Referring to Figs. The retaining strip l0 is represented interlaced with the shade 4:1. The shade 41 is folded over at 42 and at the upper end of the fold a reinforcing strip 43, preferably concavo-convex in form, is inserted. The ends of the strip 41:3 enter the bulged portions 35) of the ferrules 37, 3S, and screws l -l; in threaded engagement with the ferrules may clamp the ends of the strip 40 to more rigidly hold it in place. The reinforcing strip 43 is preferably made of metal and does not necessarily require its ends to be inserted in the bulged portions ill) of the ferrules In Fig. 8 a roller 50 is represented with the ferrule 51 and a. retaining strip 52. The latter is located at its ends in a groove 53 formed in the surface of the roller 50 when it enters the said ferrule, thereby obviating the necessity of bulging the ferrule.

Among the advantages of my invention may be mentioned the detachable function of the retainin strip from the shade and from the ferrules of the roller. The interlacing of the retaining strip with the shade and the detachable locking of the ends of said strip with the ferrules provide a substantial support for the shade and prevents its tearing when using the roller.

Difliculty has been experienced heretofore in finding a suflicient means for securing a window curtain shade in placeand one that can be inexpensively manufactured and put in place on the window. By the use of my device a tackless window shade is secured.

In the modification shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the roller 60 similar to 20 supports the shade 61 similar to 30. A ferrule 62'has extending therefrom the lip 63 which bears upon the shade 61 covering one of the corners thereof. The retaining strip 64 is not interlaced with the shade but is located in the fold formed by folding over the end of said shade as shown at 65.

Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:

1. In a device of the character described the combination of a roller, ferrules supported on the roller, a flexible sheet of material for the roller, a concavo-convex retaining strip engaged by said ferrules and connecting said sheet of material to said roller, and lips extending from the ferrules each covering one of the corners of the shade.

2. In a device of the character described the combination of a roller, ferrules at the ends of said roller, a flexible sheet of material having a plurality of slots for said roller, a retaining strip interlaced with said I said ferrules.

3. In a device of the character described the combination of a roller, ferrules having bulged portions supported on the ends of said roller, a flexible sheet of material with one end bearing on said roller, a retaining strip interlaced with said sheet of material and its ends engaged between the inner walls of the bulged portions of said ferrules and the end portions of the roller.

4. In a device of the character described the combination of a roller, a flexible sheet of material for the roller, a concavo-convex retaining strip interlaced with said sheet of material, maintaining said sheet of material in place with said roller, and a reinforcing strip for said material.

5. In a device of the character described the combination of a roller, a flexible sheet of material for said roller, a concavo-convex retaining strip interlaced with said sheet of material to secure the latter to the roller and means to rigidly hold said strip in place with said roller.
