FENCE-GAP FASTENER. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application filed August 22, 1912. Serial No. 716,495.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. ALTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkers Landing, in the county of Armstrong, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Gap Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gates for wire fences and has for an object to provide a novel lever clamp for securing the terminals of the severed fence wires to the fence post, detachment of the clamps permitting of the wires being released from the post to provide a gap for passage of a person or vehicle through the fence.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a wire fence equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 22 Fig. 1. Fig, 3 is a detail perspective view of the lever. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the lever attaching screw.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates fence wires and 11 two adjacent posts of the fence.
The lever clamp consists of a screw 12 adapted to be screwed into the edge ofone of the posts 11 and having a bifurcated head 13 with resultant vertically disposed hinge lugs 14:. A substantially J-shaped lever 15 is provided at one end with an integral hinge eye 16 adapted to be inserted between the hinge lugs 14 of the screw, a pintle l7 beingpassed vertically through the eye and lug to mount the lever for swinging movement in a horizontal plane. The lever is equipped remote from the hinge eye with an upstanding downwardly opening hook 18 which is designed to straddle the fence wire 10 on one side of the post 11, while the fence wire is severed on the opposite side of the post and bent to form an eye 19 which encircles the bight of the lever as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
To open a gap in the fence it is simply necessary to detach the leverhooks 18 from their related wires and rock the hooks horizontally outwardly until the eyes 19 of the fence wires pass off from the levers as clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
It is understood that lever clamps of the above described character may be utilized in connection with woven wire fences or other wire fences, the present embodiment of the invention simply illustrating the lever clamps in connection with a line wire fence for the purpose of illustrating one I use of the device.
What is claimed, is
The combination of a post, a fence wire fixed to said post, a fence wire terminating in an eye, a pin anchored in said post, a J- shaped lever pivoted at one end to said pin and passed through said eye, said eye oncircling the bight of said lever, said lever having the shank bearing upon the side of said post and being adapted to swing in a horizontal plane on said pin, and an upstanding downwardly opening hook on the free end of said lever straddling the first named fence Wire, and engaging said fixed fence wire on the opposite side of said post from said pin.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE M. ALTMAN.
