ARTICLE-HOLDER FOR LIQUID-COATING MACHINES.

7 Be it known that I, REME A.-BEAusnJoUR, a subject of the Crown of Great Britain, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Article-Holder for Liquid-Coating Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to article holders used in connectionwith machines for dipping articles for the purpose of coating them with some sort of a liquid, such as varnish; its general object beingto provide a structure which will permit the.- articles being dipped to acquire a coating of the liquid of a perfectly even thickness on all' parts of the said article.
More specifically, the invention provides means forreversing the position of the articles to be coated while the varnish or other liquid is dripping from the articles and while the articles are drying, in order to vary the direction of flow of the dripping liquidand thus prevent it from collecting on any one edge or part of the article.
Another object is to provide means for rotatably adjusting the part which supports the articles to be coated, in order that all the articles in the holder maybe reversed at once.
7 A further object is to provide article holding clamps which are longitudinally and rotatably adjustable on the part which supports the articles to be coated, whereby the articles may be held in any desired position onthe said part. I I

Referring to Figs. 1 to 6. inclusive, the
frame ofthe, article. holder comprises the side members '1 and top -member 2, and is pivotally supported, as at 3, from carriages 4 mounted in a horizontal support 5. The particular structure of the parts 2, 8, 4:, 5,- is not a part, of this invention, and hence they will not be described in detail. The
articles to be coated are indicated by 1?. A shaft 6 is journaled in the side members 1, as indicated at 7, and is provided at one end with a handle 8 for manually turning it to a desired" rotative adjustment. The
side member lwhich is nearest to the han dle 8 is provided with a right angular ex-v tension 9. Both this extension 9 and the said side memherjl are provided with holes 10,11, which holes are fitted to register with the hole'12 in the handle 8, when the latter is in two diiferent rotative adjust ments. A pin 13 is provided 'for securing the handle 8 in the said two positions.
The article holding clamp is provided, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, with one or more spikes 14: which are adapted to. engage the edge. of the article to be coated, and isfurther provided with an extension. 15 which carries a wood screwflo, which has an enlarged head 17 for'convenient manual op- 'eration. The clamp is further provided with'a hole 18 therethrough, which isfitted to receive the. shaft 6, and with a set screw 19 for securing the clamp in any desired longitudinal or rotative adjustment on the Referring now to the form shown in Figs. 7 to 11 inclusive, the frame comprises the side members 20 and topmember 21 which are supported in a manner similar to that in connection with the form shown in Figs. 1 to 41: inclusive. The articles to be dipped are indicated by A rod 22 is journaled in the side members 20, and on this rod are slidably mounted a series of combined cross frames and article holding clamps 23. These cross-frames-23 are provided with a longitudinal series of holes fitted to receive rods 2% for holding the parts 23 in substantially the same plane, whereby the parts 23 may suitably support the articles 20* in'the' holder. Pins 25. are provided for holding the rods 22, .24, against accidental displacement from the side-members 20 and combined crossframes and article holdinoclamps These parts23 are provided with a series of spikes 26 and wood screws 27. The wood screws have enlarged heads 28 for their convenient manual operation. One of the combined cross frames and article holding clamps 28 is provided with a sleeve 2. to which is secured a double handle 29 for moving it to a'desired rotative adjustment; Each'end of this handle 29 is provided with a hole. 30 whichregisters with a hole 31 in a side member 20, and a pin 32 is provided for securing the handle 29 in osition with either one of its holes 30 in reglster with the hole 31.
In operation, referring now to all the figures, the wood screws 16, 27, are withdrawn so as not to leave either points projecting beyond the surface of the article holding clamps; The articles to be coated, such as parts of a piano casing, are then forced against the clamps so as to embed the spikes 14, 26, in the said article. Care is taken to embed these spikes in some portion of the article which will not be visible when the article is put to its final use. The wood screws 16, 27,- are now screwed into the article to be dipped care being taken that these screws shall not enter any portion of the article which'is to be finally exposed, and the article is then firmly held by the clamp. In the case of the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the clamps with the article may be secured in any desired adjustment on the shaft 6 by means of the set screws 19; but in the structure represented in Figs. 7 to 11 inclusive, the combined cross-frames and clamps 23 cannot be rotatably adjusted on the shafts 24. The shaft 6 and the combined cross-frame and clamp 23 may be moved to the desired rotative adjustment by the handles 8 and 29, and secured in said adjustment as described above. After the articles have been dipped, their position in the frame may be reversed as desired, by turning the handles 8 and 30 to the other angular adjustment and securing them therein as formerly. Thus the liquid with which the articles have been coated may be allowed to drip for a while from one corner of the articles and then for a while from an other corner. This will avoid the collection of a considerable amount of the liquid at one corner of the article, and consequently insure an even coating throughout the entire article.
It will be seen that the clamps herein described are particularly well adapted for holding parts of a box-like casing, such as a piano casing, in which one side and one or more edges of each part are hidden from view when the entire casing is assembled, for the reason that the spikes and screws may get a firm grip on the article itself without in any way marring its appearance when finally in its assembled position.
It will be: seen that I provide means for reversing the angular position of the articles being coated, which is very simple and which may be very conveniently and expeditiously operated; the whole set of articles held in the holder being reversed withone movement.
It is plain that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the different parts of this ap paratus, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit 'myself strictly to the form herein'shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. An article holder for liquid. coating machines comprising mechanism for supporting the articles being coated, and a clamp carried by said mechanism for holding the articles thereon, said clamp being rotatably adjustable on said mechanism;
2. An article holder for liquid coating machines comprising mechanism for sup porting the articles being coated, and. a pluralityof clamps carried by said mechanism for holding the articles thereon, said clamps being rotatably adjustable on said mechanism.
3. An article holder for liquid coating machines comprising mechanism for supporting the articles being coated, a clamp carried by said mechanism for holding the articles thereon, said clamp'being longitudinally and rotatably movable on said mechanism, and means for securing said clamp in different longitudinal and angularpositions on said mechanism.
4. An article holder for liquid coating machines comprising mechanism for supporting the articles being coated, a plurality of clamps carried by said mechanism for holding the articles thereon, said clamps being. longitudinally and rotatably movable on said mechanism, and means for securing said clamps in different longitudinaliand angular positlons on sa1d mechanism.
5. An article holder for liquid coating machines comprising mechanism for supporting the articles being coated, a clamp carried by said mechanism for holding the articles thereon, said clamp being longitudinally and rotatably movable on said mechanism, and means for securing said; clamp in any different longitudinal and angular positions on said mechanism.
6. An article holder for liquid coating machines comprising mechanism for supporting the articles being coated, a plurality different rotative positions, a device for locking said shaft in different rotative positions, and an article holding clamp adjustable longitudinally and. rotatably on said (shaft.
8.
