Description
R. S. MERRILL.
Lar np Bracket.
No. 107.279. Patehted Sept. 13. 1870.
itlnitetl gtatraglatwt can,
RUFUS s. MERRILL, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, itssicnoa TO HIMSELF, JOSHUA MERRILL, ANDWILLIAM B. MERRILL, ors n PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 107,27 9, dated September 13, 1870.
. IMPROVEMENT m tnmrnanacxnrs The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent aud'making part of the same To whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUFUS S. MERRILL, of Boston, in thecount-y of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Brackets, of which the following.
tions, under which the projecting flange on the lamp passes when the lamp is placed in the bracket, and a spring catch, which, when the lamp is in place, snaps over the flange, and holds the lamp-body firmly and securely in place.
The spring can be drawn back at any time to release the lamp, which can-then be takenoutof the bracket.
v The manner in which my invention is or maybe carriedinto eflect is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the bracket and lamp placed therein.
Figure 2 is a like view of the bracket without the lamp. The bracket-ring A is lamp-body B will fit in and be supportedby it.
In order to hold the lamp in its place I provide, on the upper edge of the ring, inwardly-projccting lugs or fingers a, under which the flange b of the lamp passes; and, in order to secure the lamp firmly in of dish-form, so that the" place, I tax to the ring, on the side opposite to the lugs, a snap-spring, 0, made substantially as shown in the drawing, so that it will, whenthe lamp 1s putiuto the bracket, snap over the flange b, and thus hold the 4 lamp-body firmly and'tightly in place.
' Owing which the lamp and bracket are subjected when'the car is in motion, the spring is the only device WlJlCll will retain the lamp in its proper position.
A set-screw will soon work loose, as, by the constant jar, its tendency is to unscrew, sothat the lamp will be free to shake about in the bracket, causing the light to flicker, the oil to spill, and rendering the position of the chimney insecure. The spring, on-thc contrary, at all times exerts a pressure upon the lamp which is unaffected by the motion of the car, and can never be removed unless the spring be forcibly pressed back by the hand, so that the lamp is absolutely as sured in its'position, is neverloose in the bracket, and all jar and rattle is prevented.
The bracket-ring A is attached, by a stem, 0, to' a plate, D, which is to be screwed to the side of the car in the usual-manner.
. Having now described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r ilamp-bracket, provided with lugs and a spring, for holding securely the lamp in its place, substantially as, shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification befi retwo subscribing witnesses.
RUFUS S. MERRILL.
