In the accompanying drawing} have illustrated one half only of a car truck having my invention applied thereto. But it willbe understood that the other half of the truck will correspond in construction to that shown in the drawing. The improved side,
frame A of my. truck isshown as formed of a single casting, and the side frames at opposite sides of the truck will be connected together by suitable transverse members. 3 The preferred manner ofconnecting t-he journal boxes E to the side frame A will next be described, although I wish it dis-v tinctly understood that the pivotal connection of the journal boxes to the side frame in manner permitting the boxes to rock at right angles to, the side frame maybe accomplished in various other Ways without ole parting fromthe'scope of the invention. A
stud or journal H'extending lengthwise of the side frame is the preferred means for pivotally connecting each 1 off-the journal boxes E with the side frame and, preferably, each of the journal boxes E has a stud or journal H formed integral with one of its side walls. Each of the studs or journals H is revolubly mounted within a circular journal II of considerable length and to provide the side frame A with supplemental inner bearings 10 adapted to receive the bin cular inner end portions h of the studs or ournals H.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the parts are assembled, as
shown in the drawing, the journal boxes E will be free to rock or swivel in a vertical plane at right angles tothe vertical plane of the side frame of the truck. Under this arrangement the journal boxes can adjust themselves to the position of the side frame and also .to the axles or journals on which it is mounted, thus providing for a perfect alinement of the journal bearings on the journals no matter how badly distorted the truck frame may be in adjusting itself to the inequalities or irregularities of the track. This manner of connecting the journal boxes to the side frame will be found advantageous, whether the side frame be pivotally united to the truck transom or not, since,
whatever be the means of connecting the side frames of a car truck together, there is inevitably more or less distortion of the parts incident to: irregularities or inequalities of the track. By providing the journal boxes with long, or journals and by providing the side frame with supplemental inner bearings for the inner ends of said studs or ournals,a much more perfect alinement of the circular or bearing portions h and 71 of the studs or journals H in the journal bearings of the side frame is insured, thereby preventing any uneven wear or any tendency to distort the side frame. One advantage incident to formingthe side frame with open bearings at itsends to receive the studs or journals that project laterally from the axle boxes E, is that it can be readily detached from the side frames whenever it becomes necessary to change the Wheels and axles, and this, too, without removing the truck from beneath the car.

Furthermore, the side frames, in thepreferred form of the invention can swing in vertical longitudinal planes, so that the wheel a'x-les are free to rock transversely and the wheels of the truck can, at alltimes, rest solidly upon the track, in spite of irregularities thereof. The journal boxes, while free to rock in transverse planes, are securely held against relativevertical movement upon the ends of the side frames, but in such a manner that they can be withdrawn from the side frames in longitudinal and horizontal direction, so that they can be readily detached, as stated, for repairs or the like. By my present invention I am enabled to use axle boxes that follow, in the main, the construction prescribed by the Master Car Builders Association, while at the same time providing for such swiveling movement of the boxes as will insure a perfect adjustment of the parts of the truck when distorted or riding over uneven surfaces.
I Wish it distinctly understood that while I have described what I regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the details of construction above set out may be departpermitting the free rocking movement or said journal boxes in transverse vertical planes at right angles to sald side frames; 2. A car truck comprising parallel side frames, a transverse connecting member for supporting'the car body, each of said side frames comprising an enlarged central portion, integral converging upper and lower side arms extending from said central portion and integral bearing portions connecting the ends of said side arms, the enlarged central portions of said side frames having cylindrical bearing openings for engaging the ends of said transverse connecting member in manner permitting the independent racking movement of said side frames in vertical planes, and journal boxes having pivotal connections between the bearing portions at the ends of said side frames arranged to hold the bearing boxes against vertical movement while permitting the transverse rocking movement thereof. 1
23. A car truck comprising parallel side frames, a' transverse connecting 'member,
said side frames-having transverse cylindrical bearings for engaging the ends of said connecting member, journal boxes at the ends of said side frames and pivotal connections between said boxes and said side frames comprising studs or journals on one of saidqparts and cotip'erating-bearings on the other of said parts, and the axes of said studs or journals being arranged upon a line extending lengthwise of said side frames and through the axes of the central cylindrical bearings'thereof.

Aside frame for car trucks comprisingan integral castinghaving a central opening for engaging the ends of a transverse connecting member and a plurality of ournal bearings on opposite sides of said central open1ng having axes extending lengthwise of the frame and adapted to receive studs or journals projecting laterally from the axle journal boxes.

A side framefor car trucks compris- 5 ing an integral casting provided at its center with a transverse bearing opening adapted to receive the end of the transom and provided at its ends With journal bearings eX- tending lengthwis'ethereof and adapted to receive studs or journals projecting laterally from the car axle journal boxes.

A side frame for ear trucks comprising an integral casting having an enlarged central portion, converging upper and lower ends of said side arms, said enlarged central portion having a transverse cylindrical hearing opening adapted to receive the end of the transverse connecting member and said bearing end portions being provided with journal bearings having axes extending lengthwise of said side frame.
