Be it known that I, HERBERT H. Hnwir r,
, a citizen of thellnited States, and a resident of Buffalo,- county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
' exact description.
The present improvement relates to car trucks and more particularly to car trucks in which the supporting springs are interposed between the journal boxes and the truck frame.
The invention seeks to provide an improved truck of this type in which the construction permits the rocking movement of the'side frames and wheel axles, sothatthe wheels of the truck are free torise and fall independently in passing over irregulariof a half portion of the improved truck with one of the side frames shown in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a View in eleva tion with a po'rtion'of the side frame and one of the journal boxes shown in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, with the truck side frames and one-half of the connecting member or bolster shown in section on the line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail, end view of one of the side frames illustrating the manner of mounting the journal box thereon. Fig. 5 is a detail section onthe line 5-5 of Fig. 2. 'In the present improved construction, the car-supporting center and side bearings are mounted directly upon the transverse connecting'member or bolster of the truck, and
the side frames are pivotally andremovably connected to the ends of the truck bolster that carries the center and side bearings, so that the side frames are free to rock in longitudinal, vertical planes.
*In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated, each side frame comprises an enlarged central portion 10, pairs of inclined converging side arms ll Which limited extent extend from the upper and lower parts of the central portionfand which are connected at their outer ends by pedestal yokes 12; These parts are preferably formed of an 111- tegral casting, andthe central portion v and converging side arms llcomp'rise av central web having wide, outer, marginal flanges l3 and narrow, inner, marginal flanges 14, and which flanges merge into the inner side walls of the pedestal yokes. The central portion of each side frame is provided with "an enlarged-circular opening provided with anedge flan e which, like the marginal flanges 13 an 14, projectsin opposite directions from the central web of the side frame, and which forms. an enlarged, transverse, cylindrical bearing 15. The cylindrical bearing flange 15 is slightly wider than the outer marginal flanges 13 and is connected thereto by radial bracing flanges 16.
The transverse connecting member or truck bolster 17 is preferablyformed of an integral, hollow casting substantially rectangular in section and having top, bottom and side walls (see Fig. 3) which, for the sake of lightness, are provided with flanged openings 18.: The car-supporting center and side bearings 19 and 20 are mounted directly upon the truckbolster 17 and are preferably cast integral therewith. Vertical strengthening flanges 21'extend between the top and bottom walls of the truck bolsterbeneath the center and side bearings. The ends of the truck bolster are \larger transversely than the central portion thereof (see Fig. 1) and are provided with hollow, enlarged, cylindrical trunnions or in the central cylindrical bearings 15 of the side frames. On opposite sides of the central bearing, the side frames are provided with bosses 23' having pockets for receiv ing keys 24. These keys are removably held in place by pins or bolts 25 and the inner ends. of the keys extend through vertical slots formed in the walls of the hollow trunnions or journals22 of the truck transom. The sideframes are thus removably connected to the ends -of the truck transom and, inasmuch as the slots 26 are slightly wider than the keys 24-, the side frames are free to rock independently to a. in longitudinal, vertical planes. Small, inclined, strengthening flanges 32 extend- The side portions of the truck transom (see Fig. 3) are slightly inclined outwardly and downwardly from'the central portion side frames of the truck. The inner ends ofv the journals or trunnions 22 are strengthened by internal circular flanges 27and external flanges 28. The latter, which merge into the upper portion of the transom, form shoulders that abut against theinner faces of the side frames. Preferably, the latter are provided with a series of integral bosses 29 aboutthe inner portion of the cylindrical bearing flanges 15, and against which the shoulders or flanges 28 abut, these bosses formingbroad bearing surfaces to take the endthru'st between the connected parts.
The walls of the pedestal yokes at the ends of each side frame are arranged in planes transverse to the plane of the side frame and are strengthened by vertical web flanges 30 which extend upwardly andou'twardly over the pedestal yokes and downwardly to the outer lower end portions thereof The lower ends of the'yokes are open i 31 and the vertical web flang ened top wall is provided on its lower face with an angularseatthat directly engages' so upper angular face of the bearing 01' bolts 34. i

The lower open ends of the pedestal yokes are closed and strengthened byspacing sleeves 33 and journals 37 which are arranged'within journal boxes 38.' The general construction-of the journal boxes .is similar to'thestandard prescribed by theMaster Car Builders Association, each box having a suitable bear- -ing or brass 39 for engaging the car axle journal 37. In the construction shown, the

For this purpose, the thickened wall of each journal box is provided with a rounded bearing 'surface45 and each spring, support -13 is provided with a correspondingly shaped seat 46 for engaging this bearing surface. ,Preferably, these bearing surfaces are'oylindrical and have a common, horizontal axis adjacent the axis of the journal and journal box at right angles thereto. It should be noted that the cylindrical bearing surface 45 on the upper portion of the longer than the seat 46 formed in the spring support 43, so that the latter is carried upon the upper portion of this bearing surface and in such a mannerthat it will-not interfere with the rocking movement of the-box.

It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials-of the invention as defined in the claims.
' I claim as my invention a 1. A car truck comprising wheels and wheel axles, boxes for receiving the ournals of said wheel axles, side frames having pedestal yokes at their ends wherein said boxes are vertically guided, supporting springs interposed between the tops of said boxes and the upper ends of, said yokes, sa1d side frames having enlarged, central, cylindri- -cal bearing openings substantially in line with said car axles', a transverse connecting member-having car-supporting center and side bearings and provided with'end jou nals' arranged Within the bearing openmgs of said side frames, and means for detachably connecting said side frames to said journals in a manner permitting theindependent rocking movement of said side frames, substantially as described.

A car truck comprising parallel side frames having pedestal yokes at their ends, journal boxes vertically guided in said yokes, supporting springs interposed between, the tops of said journal boxes and the upper ends of said yokes, and a truck bolster having car-supporting center and side bearings directly mounted thereon and provided with end journals, said side frames being removably mounted on the end journals of said bolsterin manner permitting the limited rocking .movement thereof in vertical planes, substantially as described.
3. A car truck comprising parallel side frames having pedestal yokes at their ends, journal boxes vef'tically guided in said yokes, supporting springs interposed between the tops of said ournal boxes and the up-- per-ends of said yokes, said side frames having central, cylindrical, bearing openings,
and a cast metal truckbolster having inte gral car-supporting center and 'side bearings, and integral end journals arranged within the bearing-epeningsof said side frames and ,removabl'yj connected thereto, substantially? as described. I, 4i A caf'truckcomprising:-sideifralmes. having pedestal yokes at their ends and enlarged, central, bearing openings, journal boxes vertically guide'din said yokes, supporting springs interposed betweenthe tops of said'boxes and the upperends of said yokes, a truck bolster of metal provided boxes vertically guided in said yokes, sup' porting springs interposed between the tops of said boxes and the upper ends of said yokes, a truck bolster of metal provided with car-supporting.center and side bearings directly mounted thereon, and having enlarged, cylindrical, hollow ends journaled in the bearing openings of said side frames and flanges at the inner ends of said cylindrical ends bearing against the inner faces of said side frames, and means for detachably connecting said bolster and said side frames in a manner permitting the inde pendent limited rocking movement of the latter in vertical planes, substantially described. A truck bolster formed of metal and having integral center and side bearings and integral, hollow end journals for engagement with hearing openings of the truck side frames, substantially as described.
7 In a car truck, parallel, metal side frames each comprising a central portion provided with a flanged cylindrical bearing opening, integral upper and lower side arms and integral pedestal yokes connecting the ends of said side arms, journal boxes vertically guided in said yokes, supporting springs interposed between the tops of said boxes and the upper ends of said yokes, and a truck bolster having cylindrical ends joui naled' in the openings of said sidef-rames and removably connected thereto, substantially as described.
8. A cast metal'side frame for car trucks comprising a flanged web and having an enlarged, flanged, central bearing opening midway between its upper and lower edges I thereof for receiving the journal end of a transverse'connecting member and integral Q pedestalyokes at its ends, -substantially as described.
