Description

E. B. ROGERS.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 29, 1912.
1,072,506. A Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
i FIG.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,126.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDwARo ERNEST Rooms, a subject of the Kingdom of Greatv Britain, residing at Highfield, Lichfield. Road, Four Oaks, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Safety-Razor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a new or im proved safety razor and is particularly applicable to those of the "type in which the blade holders are pivoted to rock for strop-- ping purposes or to swing over for the removal of the blade.
It is the practice when'using an ordinary razor to lather the face twice and to place the opposite sides of the blade against the face when removing the different lathers.
The present invention comprises a safety razor operable substantially on the system of an ordinary razor i. e. a safety razor both sides of the blade of which may be'used, from which it will be understood that in addition to the life of the blade being doubled the result obtainable by the use of a safety razor according to the present invention is equal, or considering the facilities afforded by razors of the safety type, in excess of that previously obtainable only by the use bf an ordinary razor and a skilled operator. p
According to the present invention two blade guards or shields are provided one on each side of the handle and the blade holder is pivoted so that it can be made to readily occupy the relative position to either of the guards.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and more easily carried into practice reference may be had to the appended sheet of drawings,.upon which Fi ure 1 is a part sectional elevation of a sa ety razor according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of a blank from which a part of the razor is formed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the member formed from the. blank shown in Fig. 2. r Fig. 4 illustrates a method ofpivoting the" blade holder to its supporting stern.-
In a convenient embodi' 'ent of" this invention, such asis illustrated by Figs. 1 to 4:
of the drawings a framemember A the ends of which are shaped and bent to form blade guards a and a 'is mounted upon or secured to a tubular handle I) conveniently b means of a socket d which may be secure to the handle and member A in any convenient manner, while slidably mounted within the handle is a plunger or piston b from which extends a stem 0 screwed to the plunger d,
Patented Sept. a, rare.
carrying the blade holder hinge member al having a stem or pintle e secured therein and supporting the blade holder D. To permit of the blade 9 being disengaged from the projections a or a and swiveled into engagement with the projections on the other guard the extremities ofthe shaft e (are adapted to project into elongated apertures a formed in the side wings a of the member A and a spring 71. is provided within the handle 6. By pressing upon the projecting extremity of the plunger 6 the blade holder may be displaced to an extent depending upon the length of the apertures a and the blade released from the projections a or at and swiveled around the pivots 6 into operative relation to the other guard, when by releasing the plunger thespring causes the plunger and stem to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, in Which position the blade will be engaged by one or the other sets of projections a or a", which may be conveniently formed from substantially V- shaped strips of metal partially cut from near'the extremities of the guards and bent up as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A stop 71 may be formed upon the extremity of the plunger 12 to limit its length of travel while the member A may be perforated as'for instance in the manner shown in Fig. 2, while if desired an armed member d Fig. i may be employed in place of or in addition to the hinge member 03 which serves to connect the blade holder e to the stem'c.
The screw connection between the plunger 6 and the stem c -aforedescribed is of advantage in that it allows the length of the latter to be adjusted. I
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a safety razor, a frame including a pair of arms provided with opposed slots, a blade holder provided with a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said slots, a guard extending from said frame and provided with hook teeth adapted to engage over the edge of a blade held in said holder when the shaft is in one position in said slots, and means tomove'the shaft to a sec ond position in said slots' and release said blade.
frame mounted on said hollow handle and having an'opening therein registering with the opening in the handle, said frame including a pair of arms provided with opposed slots, a plunger extendin through the opening in the frame into sai handle, a hinge member carried by said plunger, a shaft passing through said hinge member and having its ends held in said slots, a blade holder mounted on said shaft, a guard extending from said frame and provided with means to engage and hold a blade edge when in the holder with the plunger drawn into the handle, and means to move said plunger in said handle.
3. In a safety razor, a hollow handle, a
- frame mounted on said hollow handle and hinge member carried by said plunger a from the lower end thereof, a stem connecting said plunger and last mentioned member, and a spring surrounding the stem and bearing at one end against the frame and at the other end against the member.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set] my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD ERNEST ROGERS.
