EEEHEEEEEE HERMAN RICHTER, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application filed January 27, 1910. Serial No. 540,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN RICHTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invent-ion relates to railroad cars and has for its object to make the car safer to travel in.
My invention makes the car stronger, prevents the splintering of the parts from the framework of the car and protects the car from the trucks in case of. an accident to the train.
I attain these objects by the devices and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a cross-section of any improved car; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, a portion of the body of the car being broken away to reveal the interior thereof.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention applies equally well to old cars constructed in the usual manner and to which my protecting arrangements are attached, as it does to new cars. Broadly speaking, it consists of lining the interior of the wooden walls and the floor of the car with sheet galvanized iron; protecting the outside of the walls and the lower side of the frame or bed of the car with a similar covering of sheet galvanized iron; incasing the sides of the stringers or sills and the cross pieces of the bed with sheet iron;
. and interposing between the trucks and the by similar sheet galvanized iron 9; as is also the lower sheathing 10 under the car bed protected by the iron sheet 11. Heavy reinforcing plates 12 are secured to the under side of the outer iron sheet 11, directly over the trucks 13 (see Fig. 2). It will therefore be seen that my car is protected from being smashed to pieces in an accident, by an inside and an outside casing of iron and that this casing also reduces the risk from fire.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
A car comprising a frame work having exterior covering and being mounted on trucks and having end platforms, and thick metal reinforcing plates extending under the car platforms and secured to and covering the bottom of the car.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
M. F. MONEIL, CALEB BENNETT.
