GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.-
Application filed September 2, 1910. Serial No. 580,213.
To all where it may concern o it known that I, FRANK A. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at ()verbrook, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Garter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garters, especially that class of garters known as knee-drawer garters in which means are provided for preventing the metallic parts coming in contact with the leg.
The object is to provide an improved means for covering the rear, or for connecting the several parts together whereby the underside of the metal is entirely covered by a fabric.
lily invention comprises especially a new improved form of connecting member and means or method of threading the web so as to protect the entire back or under surface thereof, and at the same time maintaining said under surface smooth and flat.
The invention also comprises means whereby short scraps or remnants of webbing or bands may be utilized for securing the clasp to said connecting member.
Referring to the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a garter comprising my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the rear side of same. Fig. is
a perspective view of the connecting mem ber. Fig. -l is a section on line l- -l of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
This structure is a modification and improvement of the patent to Berkey No. 898,176 of Sept. 8, 1908. It will be noted that in the said Ber-key structure the web 21 is threaded backward and forward through the several slots 14. of the plate or connecting member P). The upper part of the web forms the leg band; the lower part is adapted to connect with the clasp. It will be noted that as the web is threaded backward and forward through the slots 141: the intermediate metal lie portions are left exposed.
By the present invention the connecting member 7 is so formed that the end of the leg band 8 is threaded through slots contained in said connecting member and the clasp supporting band 9 is threaded through other slots in said connecting member 7 to structure shown in the form a complete covering for the rear or underside of said connecting member. This covering is perfectly smooth aml llat, that is, free from lumps or projections, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and l. 'lhe peculiar formation of the comiecting member as an example of a preferred embodiment of my in vention, is shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that slot 10 is slightly inclined to correspond to the direction of the leg band adjacent thereto, when in the operative position. The leg band is threaded through this slot 10 from the underside of member 7, and then through slots 11 and 12 and then back heneath the member 7 to and through slot '10, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The connecting member is also provided with the slots 14; and 15 through which a separate piece of fabric or webbing which holds the clasp member 10 is threaded in the manner shown in Fig. .lt will also be noted that; the upper slot la is in the shape of an are. This carries the portion of webbing t) toward the middle part of the slot extension close to the webbing 8,30 that the two webbings 8 and t), together or jointly form a very complete covering to the rear, inner, or underside of connecting member 7.
It will be noted that the strip 13 on the outer side of slot ill) is raised slightly above the plane of the body of member 7. It will also be noted that the portion between slots it and 12 is raised above the plane of the member 7. It will also be noted that the several corners or portions of the plate at the extremities of the several slots are all slightly curved upwardly, that is, away from the rear or under sale of the body of the member,
The purpose of bending the portion 13 out of the plane of the main body of connecting member 7 is to give the garter a better set. The purpose of bending the intermediate portion between slots 11. and 12 away from the plane of the main body of connecting member 7, is to accommodate the different layers of webbing and prevent a lumpy or uneven surface on the underside of the garter beneath the connecting member 7. The purpose of bending the several corners away from the rear plane of connecting member 7 is to prevent any possibility of their coming in contact with the leg.
What I claim is:-
1. A garter, comprising a clasp, a slotted connecting member, a leg band and a separate clasp supporting band, one end of the leg band threaded through slots of the connecting member and covering the inner side of said member to the Width of said band, and the clasp supporting band threaded through other slots of said connecting member and covering the rest of the inner side thereof.
2. A garter comprising a clasp, a slotted connecting member, a leg band and a separate claspsupporting band, said connecting member provided with substantially horizontal. slots and substantially vertical slots, one end of the leg band threaded through the vertical slots and covering the upper part of the inner side of said connecting member, the clasp supporting band threaded through the horizontal slots and covering the rest of the inner side thereof.
3. A garter comprising a clasp, a slotted connecting member, a leg band and a clasp supporting band, the connecting member having parallel horizontal slots and vertical slots and a slot slightly inclined to the vertical, the clasp supporting band threaded through the horizontal slots and covering the lower part of the inner side or said con necting member, the leg band threaded through the other slots and covering the rest of the inner side of said member.
4:. A garter comprising a clasp, a slotted connecting member, a leg band and a clasp supporting band, the connecting member provided. with means for disengageable attachment of the free end of the leg band Copies of thispaten t may be obtained for five centseach, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
and bent so as to have different portions lying in different planes to accommodate the several layers of the band and secure an even surface on the inner side thereof, said bands so threaded in the connecting member as to conjointly cover the entire inner side.
A connecting member for a garter comprising a metallic plate provided With horizontal slots and vertical slots and a slot slightly inclined to the vertical, said slots adapted to receive the Webbing, and a centrally located hook element, the various parts of the plate being bent into different planes to accommodate diiiercnt thicknesses or layers oi webbing to secure a smooth inner surface of the garter.
(3. A garter comprising a clasp, a slotted connecting member, a leg band and a clasp supporting band, said connecting member providedavith horizontal slots and vertical slots and a slot slightly inclined to the vertical, the leg band being threaded through the inclined slot from the under side of the connecting member then through the vertical slots, then around the outer edge of the connecting member beneath the member back to and through the inclined slot, the clasp supporting band being threaded through the horizontal slots in such manner as to entirely cover the under side ofthe connecting member adjacent to said slots.
