To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL WAARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deep River, in the county of lVahkiakum and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joints and particularly to means for bracing the joints to prevent sagging between the ends of the rails.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be cheaply constructed and readily applied to the present rail joints.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient joint which is in efiect a truss or joint chair and acts to hold the ends of the rails in alinement whereby bumping is eliminated.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View. Fig. 4: is a detailed side elevation of a modification.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 and 2 represent the ends of the rails to be connected. These rails are joined together in the usual manner by fish plates 3 and are supported as customary upon the ties 4:. In a preferred form of the device the base flanges 5 of the rails are recessed on their undersides as shown at 6 and seated in said recesses on opposite sides of the joint between the rails is a connector plate 7 having transversely grooved or hollowed ends 8 which are adapted to receive the angular truss rods 9. These truss rods are passed through the transverse apertures 10 formed in bolting bars 11 which extend through apertures 12 in the webs of the rails adjacent the ends of the fish plates 3.
In the modification shown the connector plates 7 are shown seated directly upon the underside of the rails without the rails being recessed to receive the same. It is of course, understood that the ends of the truss rods aref threaded to receive the nuts for drawing the parts into position.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with rail ends to be connected having apertures in the webs thereof, of connector plates seated beneath the joints of the rails, bolting bars extending through the rails, and truss rods extending through the projecting ends of the bolting bars and beneath the ends of the connector plates.
2. The combination with rail ends to be connected having apertures therein, a connector plate extending beneath the joint between -the rails and having transversely grooved ends projecting beyond the base flanges of the rails, bolting bars passing through the webs of the rails, and truss rods extending through the bolting bars and lying in the grooves of the connector plates.
3. The combination with rail ends to be connected having apertures in the webs thereof and recesses in the underside of the base flanges, of a connector plate seated in said recesses, bolt-ing bars passing through the apertures, and truss rods extending through the bolt-ing bars and beneath the ends of the connector plate.
