This invention relates to.improvements in attachments for thread doubling and twisting machines and is particularly well adapted for use in connection with machines for twisting silk. y
This invention consists in certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts at the feed rolls whereby novel means are provided for automatically separating the turns of the thread as it passes around the -feed rolls, to prevent the fraying, roughing or breaking of the thread due to the sawing of one turn of the thread upon another turn thereof.
My invention more specifically comprises an inclined guide such, for instance, as a rod interposed between 'two parallel feed rolls in position to engage the turns of the thread as it passes from'one roll to the other roll, the ,guide referably being removable to make it readily renewable. g
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented -in the accompanying. drawings, in which- .Figure 1 is a front view of a -portion of a. thread doubling and twisting machine,
with my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is across section taken in the'plane of the 'line A-A of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a. detail cross section taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig 1, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the roll holder, and Fig. 5 is a section taken in the plane of the line C-C of Fig. 4.
A pair of feed rolls 1 and 2 are mounted in suitable bearings 8, 4, and 5, 6, of a. piece 7 forming part of a holder. These feed rolls 1 and 2 are parallel 4and are driven from the gear 8 on the shaft 9 through their gears 10 and 11.
The usual means may be provided for throwing the feed rolls into and out of operation.
The thread 12 is passed around the rolls 1 and 2 the desired number of turns. An inclined guide, which is shown in the presentinstance as a rod 13, is arranged in osition to engage the thread as it passes rom one roll to the other roll and because'of the tendency of the thread to ride up the inclined guide the said guide will automatically keep the turns of the thread separated and thereby prevent damage tothe thread.
This inclined guide 13 is herein shown as being inserted through a hole 14 in one part of the piece 7 into a hole 15 in another part of the piece 7, said guide being removable through the hole 14 and being secured in position by means cfa set screw 16 carried by the piece 7 and impinging against the said uide. By making this guide removable, 1t may be readily renewed as required.
The parts of the machine illustrated but not specifically described, form no part of the present invention, and are of well known or' approved form.'
By mounting the feed rolls 1 and 2 in parallelism and providing a separate inclined guide for separating the turns of the thread, the rolls may be driven from their drive shaft without the employment of special cut or formedgcars.
