To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner O. GREEN- HALGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Cutting Double-Pile Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a machine for severing double-pile fabrics as to insure an even pile on each of the severed strips, a further object being to provide steady hearings for the rapidly-revolving cutting knives, and to permit the adjustment of the latter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a longitudinal section of my improved machine for cutting double-pile fabrics; Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a plan view of the same, without counter-shaft and driving-belts; Fig. 3, Sheet 3, a transverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, Sheet 1, an enlarged section of part of the machine.
A is the frame of the machine, to suitable hearings in which are adapted the shafts of the drums B B and the spindles of a series of guide-rollers, a, and at the top of the frame are the transverse bars D D, the space between which is such as to permit the passage of the double-pile fabric .c,which is severed by the knives F, the severed pile-strips y being drawn one over one bar, D, and the other over the opposite bar, D. The spindles of the knives F are adapted to bearings on a slide, G, which is guided on a transverse bar, H, of the frame, and is reciprocated laterally by means of a crank-wheel, b,on a shaft, I, adapted to hearings in brackets at the side of the machine, the crank-pin of the wheel being connected by a rod, 1), to a stud on the slide G.
The shaft 1 has a pulley, d, for receiving the drivingbelt, and another pulley, d, the belt at from which passes round a pulley, e, on a shaft, J adapted to bearings e on the frame, said shaft J having aworm,f,which gears into a worm-wheel, f, on a sleeve, 9, the latter turning on a stud,-g', on the frame and having a pinion, h, gearing into a spur-wheel, t, on the shaft of one of the drums B, the other drum having a similar spur-wheel, t", gearing into the wheel 2 so that said drums are caused to rotate in opposite directions.
So far as described the machine is substantially similar to others which have been devised, eXcept that the gearing is considerably simplified. In the ordinary machines, however, it is the practice to pass the strips 3 from the bars D D directly around the drums B B, which are covered with sand-paper or other rough material, so as to serve as drawingdrums. In the event of any defect in the draft of either of the drums the strip 3 controlled thereby is subjected to less tension than the opposite strip; hence the double-strip a isnot held exactly central in respect to the cuttingknives, and the latter are liable to cut closer to one strip 3/ than to the other, so that there is a resulting unevenness in the length of the pile. rollers M, the bearings of which are in boxes m, free to slide on. guides at on the side frames, and connected to pendent weights 1) by cords p passing over suitable pulleys, p. The cut strips 3/ pass around the rollers M before reaching the drums B, so that there 1s a definite and uniform tension at all times on each of the strips, and irregular cutting of the pile is effectually obviated.
The mode of hanging the cutter-spindles is shown in Fig. 4, in which i. represents one of the spindles, squared or otherwise, formed at one end for the reception of the cutter F and at the opposite end for the pulley w, said outter and pulley being secured by nuts w as usual. The spindle has its bearing in a sleeve, P,which is adapted to avertical slot, 7a, in the slide G, a collar, S, on the sleeve bearing against the face of the slide, and a nut, T, adapted to the threaded portion of the sleeve, hearing against the inner side of the slide, so that as the cutter becomes worn and is reduced in diameter the sleeve can be adjusted so as to compensate for this reduction and preserve the cutter in proper working position. When there is a change in the size of the cutter, the bar H is adjusted vertically, and in order to permit this said bar is secured to the standards H by means of bolts 2, adapted to vertical slots 2' in the bar, as shown in Fig. 3. shown in Fig. 3, so that the slide can be reciprooated within the required limits without loosening the belt, the slack formed by the decrease of angle of the belt on one side being taken up by the increase of angle on the opposite side.
Instead of subjecting the bearings of the rollers M to the action of suspended weights, springs may be used, as shown, for instance, by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and plain rods, bars, or strips may be used with the tension-regulating devices instead of the rollers shown, although the latter are preferred.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the bearing-bars D D, the drawing-drums B B, the pile-cutters, mechanism for actuating said drums and cutters, tension bars or rollers M, and means for causing said bars or rollers to bear upon the cut strips before the latter reach the drawing drums, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the bearing-bars D D, the drawing-drums B B, the pile-cutters, a slide carrying ,the spindles of said cutters, mechanism for rotating the drums and cutters and reciprocating the slide, tension bars or rollers M, and means for causing said bars or rollers to bear upon the cut strips before the latter reach the drawing-drums, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the slide carrying a series of spindles, each having a belt-pulley and cutter, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a counter-shaft located above and centrally within the limits of reciprocation of said slide, a pulley, w, on said counter-shaft, and a belt, q, adapted to said pulley w and to the pulleys of the cutter-spindles, as set forth.
