DOOR-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,1913.
Application led February 12, 1913. Serial No. 747,870.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI GADBoIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door checks and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and eiiicient in use.
Other' objects will appear hereinafter. I
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying' drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper end portion of a door and door casing to which is applied a door check embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the door casing being broken away in order to expose underlying parts, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken on substantially line mof Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a bracket 1 the rearward or base end of which is secured rigidly to the under side of the upper rail 3 of the door casing 3. Mounted upon the outer end of the bracket 1 is a door check l of any approved design, one of the pneumatic type being preferably employed the base 2 of said check being rigidly secured to said end of said bracket. Connected with the oscillatory spindle 4 of the check 4 is an outwardly projecting arm 5. Fulcrumed intermediate its extremities at 6 to the outer end of the bracket 1 is a lever 7 curved, as shown. One end of the lever 7 is connected by means of a link 8 with the outer end of the arm 5, the opposite end of said link being connected by means of a link 9 with a socket member 10 which is fastened to the adjacent side of the door 11 close to the hinge or pivot of the latter.
In order to afford adjustment of the links S and 9 so as to adapt the device for use under varying circumstances, turn buckles 12 are employed for cooperation with said links, as will be readily understood. Corresponding ends of the turn buckles 12 are split as shown 4fo-r embracing balls 13 provided at the ends of the arm and lever engaged by said links. Screws 14 cooperate wit-h the split ends of said turn buckles for maintaining the same in operative engagement with the balls 13 engaged thereby. The provision of ball-and-socket joints as shown in the various points in the mechanism conduces, as will be understoo-d to ease and smoothness -in the operation of the device. The link 9 is so arranged that when the door is in closed position an acute angle will be formed between the same and the adjacent end of the lever 7 or said lever will appro-ach dead center. This being so, when the d oor is in closed or nearly closed posii tion, considerable power or pressure will be required to open the door, the leverage when the door is in this position being reduced to a minimum. As the door opens, however, the angle between the link 9 and said lever 7 increases with a corresponding increase in the leverage developed, and so that the force required to open the door decreases as the door swings to its open position, the greatest leverage being developed when the door is in fully opened position, or with the link 9 disposed at right angles to the lever 7. With this arrangement then a door will be securely held in closed position and after being started to be swung to open position, may be readily swung to fully open position, and held in this position with little exertion.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a door check, the combination with a swinging 'door and the casing for said door, of a bracket mounted upon and proj ecting from said casing, a door closing and checking device mounted upon said bracket comprising an oscillatory actuating spindle; an arm connected with and projecting from said spindle; an oscillatory lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends on said a door closing and checking device mounted' upon saidy bracket comprising an oscillatoryy actuating spindle; an arm connectedl wit-h and projecting from said spindle; an oscillatory lever fulcrumed intermediate its@ ends; a linkv connecting one end of said lever with the outer end of said arm;- and` a second link connecting the otherv end of said, lever with saidy door, substantially as described.
3.. In al door check, thelcombination witha swinging door and the caslng for said door, of a bracket mounted on said casing, a door closing and checking device mounted upon said bracket comprising an oscillatory actuating spindle; an arm connected with and projecting from said spindle; an oscil latory lever fulcrumed intermediate itsy eX tremities; a longitudinally adjustable link connecting one endk of said lever with the outer end of said arm; and a second longitudinally adjustable link connecting the opposite end: of saidl lever with said door, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed' my name tofthis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
