TORCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 26,1913.
Application filed May 25, 1912. Serial No. 699,817.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA GARFIELD DURKIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Torches, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a torch in which a wick is employed, novel means being provided whereby the adjustment of said wick is facilitated for lighting the same.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the torch constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises an elongated reservoir 5 which is preferably rectangular in cross section. Secured to the reservoir and extending longitudinally thereof is a handle 6 formed in one portion thereof adjacent its curved end with a shoulder 7 whereby the torch may be hung upon a support in a substantially horizontal position. The reservoir is provided at one end thereof with a fixed closure 8 having an opening therein which is adapted to receive abushing 9, said bushing being internally threaded as indicated at 10 and having an annular flange 11 which is adapted to engage the closure 8 to prevent movement of said bushing in one direction. A casing 12 having one end thereof externally threaded is adapted to be threaded into engagement with the bushing 9, said casing being provided upon its outer periphery with a curved annular flange 13 which is adapted to engage the outer end of the bushing. The inner periphery of the casing 12 is provided at its inner end with an enlarged portion 14 which has an extension 15 projecting out- 5 wardly and spaced from the inner wall of said casing to provide a seat 16 for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. An inner wick holding tube 17 is formed on the end of the extension 15 and projects beyond the outer end of the casing 12. The said outer end of the casing 12 is reduced and internally threaded as lndicated at 18 to provide a seat for the collar 19, the externally threaded portion 20 of which is adapted to engage the threads 18 of the easing. The collar 19 is provided with a centrally located opening 21 which is adapted to act as a guide for the outer depressible tube 22 which engages the inner tube 17 and which is adapted to slide thereon. The inner end of the outer tube 22 is provided with an annular flange 23 having one of its surfaces concaved to provide a seat for the spring 24, the other end of said spring being adapted to rest in the seat 16 formed by the extension 15. Said spring is adapted to normally retain the outer sliding tube 22 in an extended position.
When it is desired to adjust the wick which is mounted in the inner tube 17 and which extends into the reservoir 5, the outer tube 22 may be forced inwardly by grasping the projections 25 formed thereon at its outer end, thus extending the outer end of the wick so that the same may be grasped and pulled outwardly to an adjusted position. Upon releasing the outer tube 22 the same will be forced outwardly to its normal position by the spring 24;, the outward movement of said tube being limited by the collar 19.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with t e accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a torch which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is A torch comprising a reservoir, a casing detachably mounted in one end of said reservoir and having its inner periphery formed with an inwardly projecting extension to provide a seat, an inner tube projecting from said seat and beyond the outer end of said casing, an outer depressible tube engaging said inner tube, said outer tube being provided at its inner end with an annular flange adapted to slide between the inner Wall of said casing and said inner tube, In testimony whereof I affix my signature means engagmg sald flange and sald seat 111 presence of two Witnesses.
for normally retaining said depressible tube r in an extended position, and a detachable JOSHUA GARFIELD DUBLIN collar engaging the outer end of said casing Vitnesses:
and adapted to hunt the outward movement JESSIE WV. PURvIs, of said outer tube. LORNE BUCHNAM.
