CURTIS WRIGHT, JR., 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
MATTRESS-HOLDING MEANS FOR BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,1913.
Application filed September 12, 1912, Serial No. 719,995.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CURTIS WRIGHT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Holding Means for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to beds, and particularly to improvements in mattress holding means therewith.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved means for holding and guiding mattresses and bed clothes mounted upon a bed frame, the rail and spring portion of which is adapted to be adjusted in a vertical or in a horizontal position about relatively stationary pivots.
Figure 1 is a plan view of thebed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailperspective view of one of the head guides for the mattress. Fig. 41 is a detail view of the head of the bed frame. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the mattress keepers.
The introduction on an extensive scale, of so-called wall beds and beds of a type hav ing a frame adapted to be adjusted vertically, necessitate the use of an efficient, yet simple and practical means for holding the mattress and bed clothes in proper position upon the bed frame and springs thereof, and my present invention contemplates the employment of a clamp device or retainer for releasably fastening the mattress 2 upon a bed frame as 3, having springs 4: of suitable type. The frame 3 is adapted for vertical and horizontal adjustment upon pivots 5 on an appropriate bracket or stationary structure 6; one pivot 5 being located adj acent the head of the bed on each side, and when the mattress 2 is placed upon the bed frame 3, tilted to a horizontal position, the foot of the mattress is clamped by substantially L-shaped keepers 7, arms of which project over the mattress and may have eyes 8 to increase the pressing area while other arms 9 of the retainers project through appropriate split-clamps 10, which have openings 11 through which the rods 9 may be passed when the eyes 8 of the retainers are pressed upon the mattress and the latter reacted upon by the springs 4: of the bed. Preferably the relative diameter of the holes 11 through which the arms or rods 9 pass, is such in proportion to the diameter of the rods, that the reaction of the springs l upon the mattress, and this in turn upon the devices 7, will cause the arms 9 to become frictionally locked, and thereby hold the mat-tress in position at the foot of the bed upon such of the springs as will be compressed by the mattress. hen it is desired, for any purpose, to release bed-clothes or mattress, the application of a little force at the lower end of the arm which projects through a respective clamp 10 will cause a counter-balancing of the pressure of the springs 4;, and the devices 7 will slide through their bearings 11 and release the mattress.
\V hen the bed is tilted about its fulcrums 5 to a vertical position, then the lower end of the mattress 2 is guided against lateral movement between appropriately designed side guides 12, which are especially designed to be attached to the rails of the bed with the least possible cost, by the elimination of bolts and other extraneous fastening devices as much as practicable, and to that end I have shown the side guides or holders 12 as provided at their forward ends with projecting bases 13 perforated at 1% to receive a single screw or bolt 15, which may pass through the bed rail, after the rear ends of the mattress head holders 12 with respective end hooks 16 passing over the ends of the bed rails and side lugs depending over the sides of the rails, have been adjusted on their respective ends of the bed frame 3.
It will be seen that by positioning the mattress stops or holders 12 upon opposite sides of the bed frame, so that their hooks 16 will. engage the ends of the rails and prevent the guides from being lifted, and so that the depending prongs 17 will overlap the side rails of the frame to prevent lateral movement of the guides 12, then the bases of the latter resting upon the top of the side rails may be bolted securely in position by a single bolt 15 on each side of the bed.
The perpendicular guides or steps 12 are transversely reinforced or braced by cross rods 18 connected appropriately thereto, and a further mattress retaining device involves a foldable head portion 19 mounted on pivots or bosses 20 formed on the inner sides of the frames 12, and which bosses may be encompassed by atubular cross bar 21 on the sition, it is manifest that a suspended mattress will be held against transverse movement by the side stops 12 and prevented from swinging laterally as to the plane of the frame 3, by the head frame 19, which occupies a position substantially parallel and relatively close to the mattress 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bed and mattress retaining device, the combination with the bed frame and upwardly extending brackets and side guides secured to the bed frame, of a head frame, a tubular bar connecting the side guides, the head piece turnable upon said bar, and
links connecting the head piece with the brackets.
frame, said guides having studs on the inner faces, and a head-piece frame pivoted upon said studs.
3. A bed structure including a frame having side and end rails, mattress guides having projections interlocking with the end and' side rails, said guides having single bolt holes and single bolts by which they are secured to the frame, studs on the inner faces of the guides, a head-piece pivoted upon the studs, a fixed support on Which the sides of the bed rails are mounted, and links connecting the head-piece with said supports.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
