APPLICATION FILED DBO. 4, 1907.

LUCIUS S. HYDE, OF SPANISH, MONTANA.
ATTACHMENT FOR WAGONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed December 4, 1907. Serial No. 405,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIUS S. HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spanish, in the county of Madison and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for de tachably securing seats to the side boards of the bodies of farm wagons, and the object of the invention is to provide a spring catch adapted to securely engage with the clamping hangers of the wagon seat and to hold the same against vertical or longitudinal movement.
With these objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of spring clamps and their application upon the side boards of a wagon, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a wagon body showing the seat engaged upon the side boards of the wagon by my improved securing device. Fig. 2 is and enlarged vertical sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of my devices engaging the clamping hangers of a seat su port.
In t e drawing the numeral 1 designates the side boards of a wagon body; 2 a seat resting upon springs which are supported by and fixed to horizontal bars 3, to each of which, near its ends are secured clamping hangers 41. The clamping hangers 4 comprise a body portion 5 having an upwardly turned hook at its lower end and a downwardly turned hook 7 at its upper end. In the lower hooks 6 rest the horizontal bars 3, which support the springs of the seat 2, and which are secured to the hooks by the bolts 8. The downwardly turned hooks 7 of the clamping hangers are adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the side board 1 of the wagon, and are of a width approximately equaling the thickness of the side boards 1.
Secured upon each of the Sideboards 1 of the wagon body, and at a point corresponding with the position of the hooks 7 upon the side boards, are positioned the spring clamps 9, corresponding in number to the number of clamping hangers upon the horizontal bars 3 of the seat support. These spring clamps 9 are constructed of a single strand of wire having a lip portion 10 adapted to engage for the support upon the top and overlie the sides of the hooks 7 of the clamping hangers 3, and are provided with the downwardly extending members 11 secured upon each other as at 12 and supported upon the side boards of the wagon by the eyes or staples 13. A coil spring 14 is engaged upon the lower horizontal stand 15 of the spring clamp, and has one of its ends engaged upon one of the downwardly extending portions 11 of the spring clamp, while the opposite end of the springs is provided with a hook portion 16 adapted to be secured upon the slde boards 1 of the wagon body.
In placing a seat upon the side boards of a wagon body provided with my improved securing device, the lips 10 of the device are drawn backward away from the side boards and the clamping hangers 3 supporting the seat are positioned upon the side boards of the Wagon body, the spring lips 10 released and engaging the face and sides of the hook 7 of the clamping hangers, the seat is effectively secured to the body of the wagon and prevented from accidental vertical or longitudinal movement, and thus securely retained upon the wagon and prevented from accidental removal therefrom.
From the above description it will be observed that I have provided a simple, cheap and eflicient means for retainin a seat upon the body of a wagon, and whic will readily permit the removal of the seat from the wagon when desired;
While I have described the preferred embodiment of the invention minor details of construction within the scope of the following claims may be made Without departing from or sacrificing any of the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a rigid, seat supporting hanger having a hook adapted to drop over the upper edge of the side board of a wagon, of a spring pressed loop engaging the top and sides of the hook.
2. The combination with a rigid seat su porting hanger having a hook engaging tfie side boards of a wagon, of a retaining device comprising a loop adapted to engage the top and sides of the hook and having downwardly extending arms and a horizontal arm pivotally secured upon the body of the wagon and a coil spring upon the horizontal arm having one of its ends en- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature gaging one of the downwardly extending in presence of two Witnesses. arms and having its opposite end secured to LUCIUS S HYDE the body of the Wagon, the spring adapted 5 to force the retaining device over the side Witnesses:
boards of the Wagon, and into engagement K A. M. HANSEN,
With the top and sides of the hook. H. P. CARR.
