FLOORING.
Application filed June 22, 1908, Serial No. 439,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SoHoDDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flee-rings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in floor construction, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eiiicient and durable waterproof flooring adapted particularly for use in places where water or fluids are used or likely to collect. Further, said invention has for its object to providea flooring having means arranged therein for conducting any fluids which may pass through said flooring or collect thereon, to a suitable receptacle or discharge.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, andin the combination, connection and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming ure 1 is a perspective view partly in section on the line 11 of Fig. 3; showing one form of flooring constructed according to and embodying my said invention; Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic plan view, on a reduced scale, showing the arrangement of channels or ducts and cesspool for a room; Fig. 1 is a longitudinal secmy invention as applied to a bath room, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail central secti0n'showmg the construction of cesspool employed.
In said drawings 10 designates a flooring comprising horizontal ll-beams 11, 11 supported in any well known manner, and having firebrick arches 12, formed intermediate the same, composed of fire brick sections position in any manner well-known in the art. Upon the upper surface of said fire brick arches 12 I first place a layer of concrete 1 1. Before said layer of concrete has become hard or set 1 produce a main channel or duct 15, preferably Vshaped in cross section, therein which extends diagonally across the roorn from one Specification of Letters Patent.

corner to another,-and increases gradually in depth from one or both of its ends to a point- 16 where a recess is provided to re ceive a shallow cesspool 17 having an outlet pipe 18 connected to a waste pipe 19, and provided with a check valve 20. 21, 21 denote branch channels or ducts which extend from the sides of the floor and communicate or merge at their inner ends with said main channel or duct 15. Said branches 21, 21 are also made shallow at their outer ends, and deeper at their inner ends where the same meet the main channel or duct 15. lVithin said main channel 15 and branches 21, 21 are disposed metal gutters or lining plates each comprising portion 22 having laterally-projecting lon gitudinal flanges 23, 23 along its opposite edges. The cesspool 17 and the main channel 15 are both provided at their upper edges with V-shaped recesses 24 to receive the ends of said gutter portions 22. Hereupon the surface ofthe concrete layer 1 1, and the gutters therein are coated with a layer 29 of material impervious to moisture, such as tar, and upon said layer of tar is placed a layer of felt 25 which completely covers said concrete layer 14, and the gutters therein. The said layer of felt 25 is then slitted above the center line of said main and branch channel sections, and the ends 26, 26 thereof bent downwardly against the inner sides of said gutters as shown at Figs. 1 and 2. Hereupon a coating of tar 30 is applied to the upper surface of said felt ASSIGNOR '10 FANNY J. MEYER, or NEW layer, and the exposed portions of the gutters intermediate the felt layer. Upon said coated felt layer 25 directly above the main and branch channels are placed cover sections 27, 27 said cover sections being of substantially the same width as the gutter sections, and corrugated transversely of their length in order to form passages through which any fluid accumulating upon the coated felt layer 25 may pass in order to enter the gutters and be conducted thereby to the cesspool 17. Upon the coated felt layer 25 and the cover sections 27, 27 is finally placed the finishing covering 28 which may consist of cement, and constitute the flooring proper, or merely serve as the support for tiles or planking as desired.
The operation will be readily understood. It may be stated, however, that any water or slitted edges of said.
fluid matter which may find its way through crevices or openings in the flooring proper,
or the finished covering 28, or pass between the edges of the flooring and the Walls adjacent to said edges, will find its way down to the covered felt layer and pass between the upper surface thereof and the finishing covering until the same reaches the corrugated covering sections 27, 27, whereupon the same will enter the channels and be conducted to the cesspool 17, and into the waste pipe 19, all returnLof fluid from said waste pipe 19 to said cesspool 17 being prevented by the check valve 20.
It is to be noted that while I prefer to employ metal gutters as herein shown, the same may in some instances be dispensed with and the felt covering, placed directly upon thefoundation covering and the edges thereof disposed into the channels formed directly therein. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire ent is: a
1. A waterproof flooring comprising a support, a foundation layer disposed upon said support provided with channels, and an outlet communicating with said channels, longitudinal coverings disposed upon said foundation layer above the channels therein, and, provided along their edges with means for permitting the passage of fluid to said channels, and a finishing layer disposed uponsaid foundation layer and covering said covers, substantially as specified,
2. A water-proof flooring comprising a support, a foundation layer disposed upon said'support provided with channels, an outlet communicating with said channels, a coating impervious to moisture disposed upon said foundation layer and the channels therein, longitudinal cover plates disposed upon said foundation layer and over the channels therein and provided along their opposite longitudinal edges with means for permitting the passage of fluid to said channels, and a finishing layer disposed upon said foundation layer and its coating, and covering said longitudinal corrugated plates, substantially as specified. a
3. A water-proof flooring comprising a support,'a foundation layer disposed upon said support provided with channels, an outlet communic-ating with said channels, transverselycorrugated longitudinal plates disposed upon. said foundation layer over the channels therein, and a finishing layer disposed upon said foundation layer and corrugated plates, substantiallyas specified.

A waterproof flooring comprising a to secure by Letters Pat upon said foundation layer, and covering the lining plates therein, transversely corrugated longitudinal plates disposed upon said lining plates, and a finishing layer disposed upon said foundation layer and covering said corrugated plates, substantially as specified;
- 6. A waterproof flooring comprising a support, a foundation layer disposed upon said support provided with channels and an outlet communicating with said channels,

7. -A waterproof flooring comprising a support, a concrete foundation layer disposed upon said support provided with channels and an outlet communicating with said channels, lining plates disposed in said channels provided along their longitudinal edges with flanges, a coating impervious to moisture disposed upon said foundation layer and covering said lining plates there in, a layer of felt disposed upon said coating and extending into said lining plates, a second coating impervious to moisture upon said layer of felt, transversely corrugated cover plates disposed upon said last named layer and covering the lining plates in said -foundation layer, and a finishing layer dist posed upon said foundation layer and its coatings and inclosing said transversely corrugated covering plates, substantially as specified.
8. A waterproof flooring comprising a support, a concrete foundation layer disposed upon said support provided with channels and an outlet communicating with said channels, liningplates disposed in said channels? provided along their r longitudinal edges with flanges, a coating of tar disposed upon said foundation layer and covering said lining plates therein, a layer of felt disposed upon said coating and extending into said lining plates, a second coating of tar disposed upon said layer of felt, transversely transversely corrugated covering plates, substantially as specified.
9. A waterproof flooring comprising a support, a concrete foundation layer disposed upon said support provided With a main channel, branch channels communicating with said main channel and an outlet for said main channel, lining plates disposed in said channels provided along their longitudinal edges with flanges, a coating-impervious to moisture disposed upon said foundation layer and covering said lining plates thereina layer of felt disposed upon said coating having the portions over said lining plates slitted and tucked into said lining plates, at second coating impervious to moistureupon said layer of felt, transversely corrugated cover plates disposed upon said last named layer and covering the lining plates in said foundation layer, and a finishing layer of cement disposed upon said foundation layer and its coatings and inclosing said transversely corrugated covering plates, substantially as specified.
