Description

EFD..
ROBERT TODD LOWD, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
PEDAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Application filed July 17, 1912. Serial No. 710,050.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT T. Lown, citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pedals, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to pedals and more particularly to a pedal designed especially for use on motor-cycles.
@ne aim of the invention is to provide a pedal of this class which, while it does no-t embody ball or roller bearings will nevertheless rotate freely upon its spindle and with but little friction.
Another aim of the invention is to provide a pedal the hub of which will not be liable to become Yfilled with dust and dirt and which may be readily and quickly detached from and applied to its spindle .without the use of tools.
A further aim of the invention is to provide means for holding the pedal upon its spindle, which means will insure against accident-al removal of the pedal, although it may be readily and quickly manipulated to provide for release of the pedal.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thro-ugh the pedal embodying the present invention, parts being shown in plan. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spindle on which the pedal is mounted. Fig. t is a group perspective view illustrating the device employed for holding the p-edal in place upon its spindle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing' by the same reference characters.
In the drawing, the spindle upon which the pedal is mounted is indicated by the numeral 1 and is formed adjacent one end with the usual head 2 having flattened sides 3 for the engagement of a suitable wrench, whereby its threaded end 4 may be screwed into or unscrewed from the usual opening in the pedal crank. The spindle 1 is reduced from about a point midway between its ends to its end opposite its threaded end el as indicated at 5 and, for a purpose to be presently explained, is fo-rmed at the inner end of its reduced portion with a conical portion 6 which merges into the surfaces of the body and reduced portion of the spindle. It will also be noted that the extremity of the reduced portion of the spindle is rounded as at 7. Also for a purpose to be presently explained the spindle 1 is formed between its head 2 and the conical portion 6 with a circumscribing groove S, the formation of which results in a shoulder 9 extending entirely around the spindle 1.
The hub of the pedal is in the form of a sleeve 10 into the outer end of which is fitted the neck 11 of a hub cap 12. The neck 11 is cylindrical and is formed with a bore 18 which is arranged to receive theend of the reduced portion 5 of the spindle, in a 'manf ner illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The hub cap 12 is formed with a circumscribing shoulder -14. Fitted into the other end of the sleeve 10 is the neck 15 of a cap 16 which is also formed with a circumscribing shoulder indicated at 17. The cap 16 is hollow and is interiorly cylindrical in form and at its outer end is increased in diameter as at 1S. By enlarging the head as at 1S, a. shoulder 19 is formed. Fitted onto the head 12 is a tread supporting plate 20, and a similar plate 21 is fitted onto the head 16, these plates being disposed against the shoulders 14 and 17 respectively. The treads which are supported by the plate are indicated by the numeral 22 and they are mounted in place upon bolts 23 extending between the plates. The formation o-f the head 2 results in a shoulder 24 which opposes the shoulder 19 when the spindle is fitted within the hub and disposed between these shoulders 19 and 24C is a fiber washer 25 which constitutes a wear preventing means as well as a means for preventing the entrance of dust and grit into the hub.
As before stated, means is provided for detachably holding the hub 10 upon its spindle 1, and this means consists in part of a leaf-spring 26 which is secured at one end by means of a screw 27 to the sleeve 10 and has its free end projecting in the direction of the head 16 but terminating shortl thereof. At its free end the spring 2G carries a lug 2S which has a plane face 29 presented in the direction of the outer end of the hub and its rounded or beveled face 30 presented in the opposite direction. This lug is til' normally held by the resiliency ot the spring 2G to project through an opening 31 formed in the wall of the sleeve 10.
In assembling the parts, the hub is slipped onto the spindle l and as the spindle enters the hub .its conical portion C will ride beneath the beveled face of the lug 28 and the lug will be lifted and held litted by the body portion or' the spindle until the spindle has been inserted so far as to bring` its groove S into registration with the open.- ing 31, whereupon the lug will be snapped into the groove with its plane face 29 engaging against the shoulder 9. At such time the rounded end of the spindle portion 5 will be received in the neck ll and the shoulders 19 and Q4 will bear against opposite sides of the washer 25.
From the foregoing it will be readily un derstood that the pedal is securely held against accidental removal from its spindle alter having been applied thereto, by the engagement ot the lug QS in the groove S ot the spindle, but that it may be readily removed it desired by lifting up the free end of the spring 2G so as to disengage the said lug from the groove,
It will be apparent 'from the foregoing that not only does the groove 8 of the spindle l serve to receive the engaging end ot the lug upon the spindle but that the ormation of this groove serves to weaken the spindle at this point so that should the outer side of the pedal strike the road surface turning a corner, the spindle will snap at this weakened portion and bending or breaking of the pedal cranl; will be prevented.
liaving thus described the invention what claimed as new is l. In a pedal, a spindle, a hub removably and rotatably litted thereon, and means upon the hub yieldably held in cooperative rela tion to the spindle whereby to hold the former in place upon the latter.
2. In a pedal, a spindle, the said spindle being termed with a circumscribing groove, a hub removably and rotatably fitted upon the spindle, and means upon the hub projecting into the groove and arranged to hold the hub upon the spindle.
B. in a pedal, a spindle, formed with a cirouniscribin shoulder, a hub ren'imiably and rotatably iittcd upon the spindlej and means upon the hub yieldably held in engagement with the shoulder whereby to hold the hub in place upon the spindle.
ln a pedal, a spindle formed with a cireumscribing groove and with a tapered portion.r and a device carried by the hub and yieldably held in position to ride upon the tapered portion of the spindle and engage in the groove therein when the hub is fitted onto the spindle7 the engagement of the device in the groove serving to hold the hub upon the spindle.
5. ln a pedal, a spindle, the said spindle being provided with a circamscribing groove. a hub removably and rotatably iitted upon the spindle and having an opening in its wall, and a spring-pressed lug :ai'ried by the hub and yieldably held to project through the opening in the hub and into the groove inf the spindle.
In a pedal7 a spindle having a circumseribing shoulder, a hub rotatably and removably litted upon the spindle and 'formed with an opening arranged to register' with the shoulder upon the spindle when the hub is in place upon the spindle, a leaf-spring secured to the hub, and a lug carried by the leatspring and yieldably held thereby to project through the opening in the hub and into engagen'ient against the said shoulder.
7. In a pedal, a spindle formed with a eircumscribing groove, the said spindle having a tapered portion, a hub removably and rotatably fitted upon the spindle and 'formed with an opening arranged to register with the groove when the hub in place upon the spindle7 a leali-spring secured upon the hub7 and a lug, carried by the tree end ot the leaf-spring and normally held to project through the opening in the hub and into the groove in the spindle and having a plane tace arranged to abut against one wall ot the groove, and a bevel face arranged to ride over the tapered portion ot the spindle when the spindle is inserted into the hub.
S. ,ln a pedal, a spindle, having a shoulder located adjacent its inner end, a hub remov ably and rotatably vfitted upon the spindle and having a shoulder arranged to oppose the shoulder upon the spindle, and a waf-iher litted upon the spindle and confined between the said shoulders.
9. In a pedal, a spindle having a shoulder located adjacent its inner end7 a hub cour prising a sleeve, a hollow cap Iitted in one end ot' the sleeve and having a shoulder opposing the shoulder upon the spindle. a washer disposed. between the said shoulders, and a cap tted in the other end oil the sleeve, and having a bore receiving the outer end ot the spindle.
ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
