Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JONATHAN COYKENDALL, 0F FARBIINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED SHOE-FASTENING.
Spccilication ibrming part of Letters Patent No. 107.064, dated September (i, 1874 10 all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN CoYKEN- DALL,of Farmington, in the county of Fulton, and in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Shoe Fastener; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specication, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, a side view; and Fig. 3, a perspective view, showing the aps on each side thrown open to admit the foot.
This shoe or boot is made of suitable material in the usual manner, the quarters A opening in front. A large ap, i, crimped to fit the curve ot' the leg and instep, is sewed to either the right or left quarter, extending from the top of the quarter to below the throat of the shoe. To the free edge of this is attached a string or perforated strap, b. On the opposite quarter is a smaller flap, C, either sewed or left on in cutting out the quarter, which flap is also crimped to it the front of the shoe, to the free edge of which is attached a strap or string, c, enough to extend around the back side of shoe and to come far enough forward from thence to buckle or fasten to the strap of the large flap. In the back edge of the large flap an opening is left unsewed, or the leather may be out for the purpose, through which opening the strap or string attached to theinner iiap is passed. Additional straps or strings may be used, if deemed advisable.
As a buckle is not necessary to fasten the straps, an eyelet Will serve the same purpose. In the latter case a string can be passed through the eyelet and fastened as securely as by the buckle.
The operation of this device is as follows: On lacing the shoe see that the free edge of the inner ap covers the opposite quarter, and then pull the strap or string attached to its edge down close to the opposite quarter in its place between said quarter and the larger ap, and buckle or tie to the other strap, and the operation is complete.
The advantage ot' this device is that both quarters of the shoe can be drawn closely and tightly, excluding dust, 8vo., and be attached to all kinds of braced shoes or boots, and is particularly applicable to soft-leather inoccasins.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shoe or boot A, having the ap B, arranged to overlap flap C, on the front of the shoe, and fastened by straps b c, in the manner and for the purpose as shown. and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, A. D. 1870.
JONATHAN COYKENDALL.
