2' '0 old whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN M. VVoo'rAN and LAWRENCE M. WoorAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Smiths Turn Out, in the county of York and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a combination tool having an adjustable jaw of novel construction which is adapted, in connection with a sliding jaw, to be used as a combined nut and pipe wrench, said sliding jaw being operated by a novel means mounted in the handle of said tool.
Tn carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a handle 10 having an elongated opening 11 extending longitudinally thereof for the greater portion of its length. The inner end of the handle 10 is provided with a transverse stationary jaw 12. Slidably mounted in the reduced passage 13 of the opening 11 is the shank 14 of the movable jaw 15 extending in parallel relation to the stationary jaw 12. The jaw 15 is curved at one end as indicated at 16 to provide a nail extractor and is also serrated as indicated at 17 to provide a gripping surface for the said jaw when the tool is used as a pipe wrench.
The inner end of the shank 14 is provided with a notch and lug 18 and 19 respectively which are adapted to interlock with a similar notch and lug 20 and 21 formed upon the adjacent end of a rack bar 22 having the teeth 23 on one longitudinal edge thereof. The rack bar 22 is adapted to slide in an opening 24 formed in the locking pawl 25,
said pawl being provided at one end with a curved extension 26 which is adapted to engage a curved opening 27 which is formed in one of the walls of the main opening 11. The locking pawl 25 is adapted to normally extend transversely of the opening 11 at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the handle 10 whereby one of the edges of the opening 24 will engage the teeth 23 of the rack bar 22 and thus prevent outward movement of the jaw 15. Said pawl 25 is retained in the position just described by means of a spring pressed block 28 which bears against the adjacent free end of the pawl 25 and which is provided with a stem 29 which is mounted in an opening 30 formed in the shoulder 31, the spring 32 being adapted to engage the block 28 in order to retain the same in a normally extended position. In order to release the pawl 25 from looking engagement with the rack bar 22, a sliding arm 33 is mounted in the opening 11 between the said rack bar and adjacent wall of said opening, the inner end of said arm being adapted to engage the free end of the pawl 25. The other end of the sliding arm 33 is provided with a finger knob 34 which projects through an elongated opening 35 formed in the handle 10. It will thus be seen that pressure upon the knob 34 toward the free end of the handle 10 will cause the sliding arm 33 to force the locking pawl into a position substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said handle and thereby release the pawl from looking engagement with the rack bar. This movement will also cause the rack bar to draw the movable jaw 15 inwardly in order to adjust the same and when pressure is released upon the knob 34 the spring pressed block will cause the said pawl to return to its normal position. It will thus be obvious that a continued reciprocating movement imparted to the sliding arm will effect a step by step adjustment of the movable jaw 15.
When it is desired to use the tool as a pipe wrench, an adjustable jaw 36 is mounted upon the shank 14 of the movable jaw 15 and secured thereto by means of a screw 37. The jaw 26 is provided with an inclined portion as indicated at 38 upon the outer surface thereof, said inclined surface being provided intermediate the ends thereof with the stop shoulders 39 for a purpose presently described. Extending longitudinally of the inclined surfaceBS for a portion of its length is a raised seat having its longitudinal edges beveled inwardly as indicated at tl, said seat being adapted to receive a sliding wedge block 42 having a longitudinal channel 43 therein, the walls 44 of said channel being beveled and adapt ed to engage the beveled edges of the seat 40 thus forming an interlocking dove-tail joint therebetween. The wedge block t? is cut away at its inner end to provide extensions 45 from which depend the stops 46 which are adapted to engage the stop shoulders 39 in order to limit the outward movement of the said block. Carried by the block 42 is a longitudinally extending auxiliary jaw 47 which has its bearing surface serrated as indicated at 48, said jaw being provided at its outer extremity with a laterally projecting extension 49 which is adapted to engage the longitudinal opening 50 formed in the seatlO when the wedge block 42 is forced inwardly by reason of the turning movement imparted to the tool in one direction when the serrations 17 of the jaw 15 and the auxiliary jaw tT are in engagement with the pipe. It will thus be seen that the turning of the tool will cause the wedge block t2 to slide inwardly upon the jaw 36 and thereby cause the aux iliary jaw 4:7 to obtain a firmer grip upon the pipe. A coil spring 51 is mounted in the opening 50 formed in the seat a0 and the outer, end of said spring engages the inner surface of the extension e9 whereby upon the release of the jaw 47 from a pipe, said spring will force the wedge block 42 to its normal position.

: a locking pawl in said handle mounted for swinging vertical movement with respect to the rack bar, and having an opening for the reception of said rack bar, and spring pressed means mounted in said handle and engaging the free end of said pawl for retaining the same in locking engagement with said rack bar, and an arm slidably mounted in the handle and engaging the pawl in opposition to the spring pressed means whereby in the movement of the arm the pawl will impart a longitudinal movement to the rack bar. fixed jaw carried by said handle, a movable jaw having a shank slidably mounted in said handle, a rack bar mounted in said opening and adapted for interlocking engagement with the inner end of said shank, a locking pawl pivoted in said handle and having an opening for the reception of said rack bar, spring pressed means mounted in said handle and engaging the free end of said pawl for retaining the same in locking engagement with said rack bar, and means slidable in said opening and engaging the free end of said pawl for releasing the same from looking engagement with said rack bar and imparting a longitudinal movement to the rack bar.
