To all whom it may concern Be it 'lrnown'that I, TET'QMAS J. Onoon, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates toimprovements in hydro-carbon oil burners and more particularly in the burner forming the subject-matter' of my Patent N0..1,02,328, dated October 22, 1912.
In the previous type-of burner T have found that when in operation the burning of the flame causes a continuous roaring noise which is exceedingly disagreeable andannoying. This I believe due to the fact that there is in each of the vertical air shaftsa column of air, which owing to the difierence in temperatures of the air above the column immediately adjacent the burner and the air below the column sets up periodic vibrations which when the burner is in action occur so rapidly as to produce a well defined roaring noise. With a view of overcoming this defect I have experimented along va-' rious lines, and have finally discovered that by arranglng the air inlets upon opposite marginal edges of the trough of the burner and eliminating the shafts entirely this noise is barely perceptible. I attribute the result to the fact that there is no well defined column of air, and that the air which supplies the burner simply rises through the slots and passes diagonally from opposite sides to the burner, leaving a substantially quiescent body of air therebeneath.
I have also devised a novel arrangementof an overlying retort and a super-heater, whereby the flame issuing from the burner proper will not only heat the oilin the overlying retortbut will be deflected to subsequently heat the oil in the super-heater, thereby avoiding any possibility of the recondensation of the gases.
To the accomplishment of the; reited objects and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appendedclaims. v

Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detail description of my invention, the numeral 1 desigiiates a trough or base having its opposite longitudinal edges deflected upwardly in planes at right angles to the body of the trough, as at 2. Immediately adjacent each of the flanges is an elongated slot or opening 3 which terminates short of the ends" of the trough 1 and is surrounded by vertical walls. The function of these openings will be described later.
1 As in my previous application for Letters Patent, the oil burner comprises a pair of sections, as 1, and since they are duplicates of each other, a description of one will sufiice for anexplanation 'of both. Arranged in parallelism with respect to thotrough is an inlet pipe 5 having upon its outer end a needle-valve 6, the opposite or inner end of said pipe being connected to a vertically disposed pipe 7 which carries the section involving an overlying retort. as 8, a superheater 9 anda burner tube 10. The overlying retort is provided with a rotatably and longitudinally adjustable deflecting disk 11, and the outer end of said retort is connected by means of suitable pipe joints to the super-heater 9 in such manner that the latter will be disposed slightly to one sideof the vertical plane or axis of the overlyingretort. The super-heater is in turn connected in any suitable manner to the burner tube 10 which is supported by the uprights 12 in vertical alinement with theoverlying retort 8, that is to say, the burner 'tfibe is deflected rearwardly relative to the 'superheater 9 so that it will lie in the same vertical plane with the said overlying retort.
In operation, the needle-valve 6 will be opened to admit the oil, and as it reaghes the burner tube 10 it mixes with tli'e air which passes in through the elongated inlets 3. Owing to the fact that the air passing through the said inlets will travel in a substantially diagonal line toward the burner tubes, the body of air below this line of travel will remain practically quiescent,,

and there will be no column of air to produce rapid reverberations and the consequent roaring isound hereinloefore referred to.
tort 8 and thereby initially heat and vaporize the oil, and as the said oil passes through the super-heater it is again subjected to the intense heat of the flame by means of the deflectingwlisk 11, so that by the time the oil finally reaches the burner-tube and is ready to form an admixture with the air, it will be in a complete state of vaporization. It Will also be stated that the vertical flanges 2 serve as a means for deflecting the air issuing through 'the elongated inlets 3 toward the burner tube 10.
It is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations of my invention as may come fairly ithin the scope of the appended claims.
