UNITE STATES PATEN FFICE.
WARREN MGARTHUR, JB., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TUBULAR LANTERN.
of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular Lanterns, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tubular lantern in which the plate upon which the globe is mounted is hinged to the lower portion of the tubular frame and in which the globe is held in its normal position by a chimney which is provided at its lower end with a hinged section or collar which bears upon the globe.
The object of this invention is to provide the hinged chimney section or collar with convenient means for moving the same up to release the globe or down to secure the globe in position.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of a tubular lantern provided with this improvement, the lifter shaft being turned down to hold the hinged collar and the globe in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper part of the lantern, showing the lifter shaft and the collar turned up to release the globe. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the lifter shaft and the hinged collar partially turned up. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a lantern, showing a modified construct-ion of the lift mechanism.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
10 represents the oil font, 11 the air chamber on the same, 12 the tubes, 13 the lantern top containing the air inlet chamber to which the upper ends of the tubes are connected, 14: the globe, and 15 the globe plate which is connected by a hinge 16 with the lower part of the lantern frame and provided with guards 17 or other suitable devices for attaching the globe releasably to the globe plate. All of these parts may be of any well known or suitable construction.
18 represents the fixed section of the chimney which is secured in the lantern top in any suitable manner and provided at its lower end with an outwardly-projecting flange 19.
20 represents the movable collar or chimney section which is connected with the fixed section by a hinge 21 on the front side of the lantern so that this collar, which prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably'fiares downwardly, canbe swung up or down on the opposite or rear side.
22 represents a cranked lifter shaft which is arranged across the lantern frame on the front side thereof and which extends through suitable openings 23 in the hinged collar or chimney section. This shaft is journaled on the tubes in bearings 24:
Q5andprovided at one end with an arm 26 for manipulating the shaft. Upon turning the shaft down, as represented in Fig. 1, the hinged collar or chimney section is pressed against the upper end of the globe,
thereby holding the latter firmly in position. Upon turning the shaft up the collar is swung upwardly, thereby releasing the globe and allowing the globe plate and the globe to be tilted backwardly.
The collar is provided at its upper end with an inwardly-extending flange 27 which extends over the flange 19 at the lower end of the fixed chimney section. These flanges assist in forming a practically tight passage for the hot gases from the globe through the hinged collar to the fixed chimney section.
In the modified construction represented in Fig. 4:, the hinged collar is raised and lowered by a lifting lever 28 which is ournaled on one of the tubes and which engages with its short arm 29 in a slot 80 in the collar. In the normal position of the globe and collar the lever rests against the tube on which it is journaled and engages with a spring clip or catch 31 by which it is held in position. i
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a lantern frame, a fixed chimney section, an annular globeholding section arranged below said fixed section, and a pivotal joint supporting said globe-holding section on one side of the lantern and permitting said section to move up or down with increasing movement to ward the opposite side of the lantern, of actuating mechanism mounted on said lantern frame and connected with said globe-holding section to swing the same up or down, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lantern, the combination with a fixed chimney section and a globe-holding chimne section connected with said fixed section by a hinge and capable of up and down movement, of a lever mechanism j ournaled on the lantern frame and connected with said movable section to raise and lower the same, substantially as set forth.
3. In a lantern, the combination with a fixed chimney section and a globe-holding chimney section connected with said fixed section by a hinge and capable of up and down movement, of a cranked lifter shaft journaled on the lantern frame and corn nected with said movable section, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a tubular lantern frame, of a fixed chimney section arranged therein, an annular globe-holding chimney section arranged at the lower end of said fixed section, a pivotal oint supporting said globe-holding section on one side of the lan tern and permitting the same to move up or down on the opposite side, a tilting globe plate arranged in the lower portion of the tubular frame, and actuating mechanism mounted on said frame and connected with said globe-holding section to swing the same up or down, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
