Description

W. J. PARFREY.
HAIR DRESSING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 5, 1912v LWQOM. Patented Aug. 12,1913.

Y., ASSIGNOR TO MAX Gr. COI-IN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-DRESSING DEVICE.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. P'ARFREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Dressing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention relates particularly to the construction of the teeth of hair dressing devices, involving such a formation that the edges of adjacent teeth for a considerable portion of their length are in close proximity or practically in contact. Open spaces, preferably angularly formed adjoin the ends of said closed portions. The spaces between the teeth are thus, when the teeth are in their normal position, provided with a positive barrier of considerable length, and to impart operativeness to the device it is essential that the teeth be spread apart, to open the barriers, for the free passage of the hair through them into the open spaces at their upper ends. This may be accomplished by providing the device with a flexible back or body portion, to which the teeth are connected and from which they extend, the whole being so arranged that when the back is flexed the teeth are practically uniformly spread apart, and when allowed to assume its normal condition the teeth are brought together and the device is securely fastened to the hair by the locked up bunches of hair between the teeth above the closed barrier edges.
A suitable construction of a device adapted to embody the teeth of this invention is that shown in the patent to J. F. Wilcox, No. 754,949, issued March 15, 1904, in which the back or body portion is curved and flexible and the teeth extend therefrom convergently and are conically arranged.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention and with the following description thereof a full understanding of the invention may be had.
Figure 1 shows in elevation a hair dressing device embodying this invention, in nor mal condition; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, enlarged; Fig. 3 illustrates a few of the teeth in normal closed position, on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the teeth spread apart as the back is flexed.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 707,752.
The teeth a, a are curved at their upper parts where they connect with the back or body portion Z), longitudinally curved. The teeth when the back 6 is in normal curved condition are close together, and arranged convergently in the form of a conical surface, and when so arranged portions 0, 0 of their adjacent sides of considerable length practically touch or are so close together that the hair between the teeth in the open spaces (Z will be securely locked therein by the perfect barriers formed by the contacting or closely adjacent portions of the teeth.
The spaces (Z are preferably angularly formed constituting V shape or reversed angular channels, as are also the open spaces 6 between the teeth below the barrier portions. To produce the angular spaces (Z and e between the teeth the width of the teeth is reduced, that is they are less in width than at the long straight barriers 0. This shape of the spaces, particularly the lower one, pro vide for a spreading of the hair as it passes through the angular channels between the teeth, causing it to freely pass through the straight channels formed by the sides of the barrier when the back of the device is flexed and the teeth separated or spread apart, as shown at Fig. 4.
I claim 1. A hair dressing device, comprising comb teeth having wide portions of considerable length normally in contact, constituting long barriers, and narrow portions adjoining the upper ends of the wide portions affording spaces above the long barrier portions, and a longitudinally curved flexible back to which the upper ends of the teeth are connected, whereby upon flexion of the back the teeth are spread apart producing openings between the wide long barrier portions for the free passage of the hair to the spaces above said barriers.
2. A hair dressing device, comprising comb teeth having wide portions of considerable length normally in contact, constituting long barriers, and narrow portions adjoining the upper and lower ends of the wide portions and angularly arranged thereto affording narrow angular spaces above and below the long barrier portions, and a longitudinally curved flexible back to which the upper ends of the teeth are connected,
whereby upon fiexion of the back the teeth subscribed my name this 3rd day of July, are spread apart producing openings be- 1912. tWeen the long Wide barrier portions for the free passage of the hair from the lower an- VILLIAM ?A- gular spaces to the upper angular spaces VVit-nesses: through the spaces between the barriers. ALFRED SHEDLooK,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto C. I-IEAnsEY.
